DIPPER-TRTP FCB, STEAM-SHOVELS.
Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1910.
llatented Dec. (i, i916.
Serial No. 570,415.
To all whom i may concern:
Be it known that T, JOSEPH L. NWATSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riesel, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented new and uselul Tmprovements in Dipper-Trips tor Steam-Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates t dipper tripping devices for steam shovels and the object of the invention is the provision or' a structure et this character which is simple, compact and easy of operationand in which there is small condensation of the steam.
A still further object of the invention is to construct a device of this character in such a manner that the steam will not exhaust near the bucketor the operator so as to obscure his view but in which the exhaust is returned to the steam chest and discharged to the atmosphere at the topl ot' the boom.
A still further object or'1 the invention is the provision` ot a novel steam chest having directly connected thereto a revolving drum for taking up and paying out a flexible hose which supplies the tluid pressure medium to the handle as the Clipper moves in and out from the boom.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and in which:
Figure l is a detail side elevation ot a dredging boom showing my invention plied thereto. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation ci the bucket arm and showing the boom in section. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view through the tripping cylinder and a portion of the bucket showing the latching bolt in full lines. Fig. l is a vertical section taken through the steam chest, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section taken through the steam chest and its attached winding drum. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the `line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings l represents a dredging boom having mounted upon its upper face suitable mechanism 2 tor the operation ot the bucket arm 3 which is provided on its ends or inner face with rack teeth l which are engaged with the pinions 5 to raise and lower the same. Upon the outer end of the arm l is secured the usual bucket 6 and hinged to the bottom thereof is the closing cap or lid 7. This lid is recessed as at S to receive an eye member 9 carried by the bucket and slidably mounted in bearings 10. @n the lid is a latch bolt 11 which is adapted to be engaged with the eye and retracted therefrom by means of a lever 12 pivoted upon the lid and having its free end connected to an operating chain 13 and this chain in turn is connected to the tree end of the lever la which is fulcrumed in the center on the piston rod 15 which is reciprocally mounted within the steam cylinder 16. rThe piston rod carries atits lower end a piston head 17 which is normally forced to the rear of the cylinder by a spiral spring 1S which surrounds the piston rod and abuts against the upper end of the cylinder at one end and against the pist-on at its opposite end. The opposite tree end ot the lever 14 is connected by links 19 to ears 20 on the cylinder 16 and when the piston is operated, the outer tree end which is connected to the chain is caused to raise the lever l2 and thereby releaase the bolt 1 1 from the eye member 9. The lid then drops by gravity or by the weight of the material in the bucket.
As the arm 3 moves inwardly and outwardly on the boom, it is necessary to provide a flexible steam connection with the cylinder 16, and in order to accomplish this, a pipe 21 is lead from the crowding engines, not shown, to a steam chest 22 secured to one side ot the boom and having a slide valve 23 mounted therein to control the steam in the inlet port 24 to the outlet port 25 and to the exhaust port 26. This valve is controlled by a lever 2T which is connected to a valve rod 2S which slides through the bushing 29 in the valve chest 22 and is connected to the valve.
rThreaded into the port 25 is a sleeve 25CL which has journaled upon it a drum 30 having a plurality of connected Grooves S1 extending in spiral around its periphery. Connected to an inwardly extending collar 32 on the drum is a steam channel 33 having a. conical shoulder Bel to abut against the shoulder 35 of similar design on the inner end of the sleeve 25a. This steam channel revolves directly with the drum and the collar 32 abuts the end of the sleeve 25a and prevents disengagement of the drum with the steam chest and disconnected sleeve.
Threaded into the collar and leading outwardly through the outer groove in thel drum is a pipe 3G which communicates with the steam channel 38 as shown, and is connected at its outer end to a flexible hose 23'? which leads from the drum to the steam cyl inder 1G and connects with the inlet port 38 therein as shown in Fig. t3. rlhis flexible pipe forms the inlet and exhaust channel for the steam cylinder and is normally wound upon the drum by the action of a spiral spring 39 which has its inner end seated in a slot 4:0 in the sleeve 25a, and has its outer end connected to a pin 4l mounted in a pair of ears ft2 formed on the inner side of the drum. When the flexible tube 37 is payed out by reason of the extension of' the bucket arm, the spring 39 is wound up, the drum rotating upon the sleeve 25a and when the bucket arm is retracted or raised, the spring 39 rotates the drum in the opposite direction and winds up on the flexible tubing` 3l'. rllhus the tubingl is always kept taut and prevented from interfering with any of' the other mechanism.
Connected to the steam chest E22 and communicating with the exhaust port 26 is an exhaust pipe t3 which leads to the outer end of the boom l where the exhaust steam is conducted so that it does not interfere with the sight of the operater or cloud the operation of the bucket as is common with devices of this character.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is-
l. ln a device of the class described, the combination with a boom and a reciprocating bucket arm, of a bucket thereon, latching` means for the bucket bottom, means for tripping said latching means, fluid pressure means for operating said tripping means, flexible piping for connecting the fluid pressure means with the tripping means, means for holding said flexible piping and forming a connection between said fluid pressure means and flexible piping, and means carried by said holding means for taking` up the slack in said piping as the dipper arm moves inwardly.
2. ln combination with a dredging bucket having a fluid pressure operated tripping mechanism for its bottom, of flexible piping for connecting` the tripping mechanism with the source of supply, valve chest connecting the flexible piping with the source of supply, and means carried by the valve chest for taking up the slack in the flexible piping when the bucket moves inwardly.
ln combination with a dredging bucket having fluid pressure operated tripping mechanism for its bottom, a valve chest carried by the bucket boom, flexible piping connected to the valve chest and to the tripping mechanism said valve chest being connected with a source of supply, means for controlling the steam in the valve chest to the tripping mechanism, and means for exhausting the steam from the tripping mechanism hrough the valve chest and the flexible piping.
l. .ln combination with a boom and a di/'edgii'ig bucket having fluid pressure operated mechanism for the bottom lock, a valve chest carried by the boom and connected with a suitable source of fluid pressure sup ply, a drum carried by the valve chest and communicating therewith, flexible piping` wound upon the drum and connected at one end with the drum and at its opposite end with the tripping mechanism, means carried by the drum for taking up the slack in the flexible pipe when the bucket moves inwardly, and means in the valve chest for controlling` the admission and exhaust of the fluid pressure means to and from the flexible piping.
ln combination with a boom and a dredging bucket having fluid pressure operated mechanism for the bottom lock, a valvt` chest carried by the boom and connected with a suitable source of fluid pressure supply, a drum carried by thevalve chest and comimmicating therewith, flexible piping 'wound upon the drum and connected at one end with the drum and at its opposite end with the tripping` mechanism, means carried by the drum for taking up the slack in the flexible pipe when the bucket moves inwardly, means in the valve chest for controlling the admission and exhaust of the `fluid pressure means to and from the flexible piping, and an exhaust pipe connected to the valve chest and leading to the outer end of the boom.
ln testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
