, 7 cover 13 which comprises a circular head 14 The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of'parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the milk can, and Fi 2 is a sectional view taken on a plane exten ing vertically and centrally through the can.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The can comprises a casing A which is constructed of metal, and a receptacle B which is also constructed of metal.
The casing A comprises a cylindrical body 1 which has its upper end oflsetinwardly and formed to provide a vertically rising annular flange 2. The lower end of the body 1 is closed by means of a circular bottom 3 which is provided at its periphery with an annular depending flange 4, the bottom being secured in applied position by means of rivets 5 which pass through the flange 4 and through the body 1. An inner annular member 6 and an outer annular member 7 are secured to the lower end of the body 1 by means of the rivets 5, said members reinforcing the bottom of the can. The annular restricted neck 8 of the casing is secured to the flange 2 of the body 1 by means of rivets 9. Formed integrally with and flaring upwardly and outwardly therefrom is the mouth 10 of the casing, said mouth being provided with a horizontally disposed flange 11, having openings 12. The upper end of the casing is closed by means of a removable provided at its periphery with an upwardly and outwardly flaring flange 15, said flange extending above and below the head and contacts with the inner surface of the mouth 10 when in applied position. The upper end of the flange 15 is provided with a horizontally disposed flange 16 which engages the flange 11 of the mouth 10. The flange of the cover 15 is provided with openings 17 which register with the openings 12 in the flange 11, said openings permitting the use of seals in securing the cover in applied position. The
lower end of the flange 15 is extended and formed to provide an annular depending flange 18 which, when the cover is applied,
engages the inner surface of the neck 8.
The cover 15 is provided with a handle 19 which is secured to the head 14 and confined wholly within the cover. As the handle is confined within the cover all liability of injury thereto is obviated.
The receptacle B comprises a sectional body, the lower section 20 of which is cylindrical and has its lower end closed by means of a bottom 21. The bottom 21 is provided with a flange 22, through which and the section 20 rivets 23 pass. An inner annular'member 24 and an outer annular member 25 are secured to the casing B by means of the rivets 23. The section 20 extends below the bottom 21 and has its lower edge set in a groove 26 formed in the upper surface of the bottom 3 of the casing A. At a point between its lower edge and the bottom 21, the section 20 is provided with a plurality of openings 27 The upper section 28 of the casing B is substantially dome shaped and has its lower portion oflset laterally to provide an annular flange 29 which embraces the upper portion of the lower section 20, and a shoulder 30 which rests upon the upper edge of the lower section. The upper and lower sections of the receptacle are secured together by means of rivets 31 which pass through the flange 29 and lower section, an annular member 32 being secured to the receptacle by means of rivets. The upper portion is reduced to provide an annular attaching flange 33 through which the rivets 9 pass, said rivets securing the upper end of the receptacle to the casing. At a point above the attaching flange 33, the upper section 28 is ofi'set inwardly and formed to provide a threaded flange 34 to which is removably secured a crate is cap 35 said cap having threaded engagement with the flange. A handle 36 is secured to the cap.
The diameter of the receptacle B is smaller than the diameter of the casing A, and in view thereof and of the fact that the bottom 21 of the receptacle is spaced from the bottom 3 of the casing, a space 37 surrounds the receptacle. The air in the space 37 is exhausted through openings closed by plugs 38 which are removably mounted in bushings 39. In view of the vacuum thus created, the milk cannot absorb the heat of the atmosphere, and none of the heat of the milk can radiate therefrom, thereb enabling milk to be kept in the can at a pre etermined temperature without the use of ice or any other refrigerant.
The. crate comprises a lower annular member 40 and an upper annular member 41 which are connected by means of slats 42 and 43. The slats 42 are secured at their ends to the upper member 41 and pass through and across the lower member 40, those portions of the slats which extend across the lower member forming supports for the can. The ends of the slats 43 are respectively secured at their ends to the upper and lower members 40 and 41. It should be apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing that I provide a can in which milk may be kept at a predetermined temperature without the use of ice or an other refrigerant, one which is ple 0 construction, and one which maybe manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost,
