mtion 0f planking. plankmg 5 1s a plan showln order to insure a proper distribution of the exhaust through all of the side ports or openings 8 the chamber 10 decreases in depth as it progresses rear 'ardly, while the battle plates 9 increase in length in their rearward progression which graduall dc creases the width of the passage 12 toward the rear of the fitting, this gradual reduction in area of the chamber 10 insures a uniform dispcsition ot' the exhaust through all of the ports or openings in the fitting and as the combined area of said ports are as before stated largely in excess of the areas of the ex taust pipe l-t, back pressure on the engine is eliminated while the particular form and arrangement of the ports and battle plates creates an aspirating action which maintains the pressure within the chamber 10 less than atmospheric thus relieving the exhaust from the back pressure to which it would be subjected it open to the atmosphere.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and what is desired to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. An underwater exhaust fitting comprising a bottom and sides forming a chamber, the said chamber decreasing in depth as it progresses to the rear of the fitting, the upper edge or each side of the fitting being provided with a plurality of ports or openings tapered in such manner that the greatest depth of said ports or openings is at the rear ends thereof, a plurality of battle plates obliquely disposed within the said chamber and arranged to deflect the exhaust through the said ports or openings, the said batlle plates increasing in length in their rearward progression in such manner as to form a tapering passage in the fitting and a pluralit oi. ports or openings arranged one after the other in the bottom of the fitting.
2. An underwater exhaust fitting compris ing a chamber to receive the exhaust, said chamber decreasing in depth as it progresses toward the rear of the fitting, a plurality of tapered ports or openings along the top of the chamber at each side thereof, a plurality of battle plates 'ithin the chamber and assoeiated with said ports or openings to deflect the exhaust therethrough, and a port or opening in the bottom of the chamber.
An underwater exhaust fitting comprising a chamber, a plurality of ports or openings in each side of said chamber, av port or opening in the bottom of the chamber and a plurality of battle plates within the chamher and associated with the ports or openings in the sides thereof to deflect the exhaust from the chamber through said ports or openings.
