WILLIAM B. HUGHES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent. i
MANUFACTR or GAS.
Application filed. September 16, 1908.V Serial No. 453,217..
y To all. when@ .it may y.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. HUGHES, a citizen ofthe United States, residingin the cit-yfof Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, 'have invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of Gas..
The improvements of my'invention con.
template the use Iof an econonizer desi ed for' intercepting and burning solid particles,
such as carbon dust and tarry -m'atter cona producer to ascrubber, and in its preferred formthe heat evolved is .utilizedfor heating air and producing steam or vapor to 15 be employed in operating the producer.
The characteristic features olf the inventionl are embodied in the. apparatusv illustrated in the accompanying drawings' and the following description thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is ase'ctional elevation of a formy of the apparatus; Fig. 2 is a Sectional plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is anelevation ofthe top of the economizer at right angles' to the view shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a modiiied construction.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. l to 3 Ainclusiveya producer 1 dis- I charges gasthrou h a passage 2, which is connected alternateilT i a lever Ll for operating it. The passages 3 fand 3 discharge into the respective chambers 5 and 5 above checkers or checkered Each of the 4chan'ribers 5 and 5 hasaV space 5 between the arches in whi'ch' the gas that has passed through the .first arch e with reduction of velocity and deposition of solids, the deposition being-facilitated by the obstruction offered by. second arch. The chambers 5 and 5 arches through the 4respectivepassages 7 and 7 Aconnected alternately with a passage 8 by a butterfly Valve 9, this'valve being operated by alever 9. The passage S'dis charges to a scrubber 10. In the tops ofthe chambers 5 and 5 tube boilers 1l and 11'-, the boilers having `vthe fiues 1l*l and 11b and the chimneys 11 :and 11d through 'whichthe products of combustion may pass from therespective chambers. Valves 4l2 and 12 are adaptedfor Vclosing the chimneys 11c and 11d alternately, these valves being connected with the respective ends of a lever 13 having a V pipes 16 of baffles and collect. .matten y with the passages3 and 3 by a butterfy,valve4,the latter having arches 6 vand contained in eachchaniber. I reversed, t
ands'bustionthuscarried on-in the lchambers 51'" discharge below the l arefthe respective lire' ed. The chamber contains the `-gethsr by pipes 15 and15,the latter havingthe plpe 15. -`connected`therewith forintrow or drawing off water. At their tops". 60.
ducing the boilers have connected therewith branch a mainpipe l6, which delivers steam or vapor Y undercontrol of a vvalve 16". It will be seen l that the princi les involved in this "apparatus V -which vis descri ed it its use for ter may also be'applied to heating-air fo'ruse lin the operation. A pipe 17, provided with outlets or nozzles 18, 18 and 18, controlled".` bythe'respective valves 19, 19 and 19,.jd livers air, or otherv suitable iiuid for carry ing on combustiomto the respective chain; I l bers 5 and 4'5 i In operation when gas is flowing from th' producer tothe scru thechambers 5 and 5', from such chamber ,is-closed while the chim ney leading from theother chamber fopen and combustionf' effected. 'Th'ej'ch' le d', ber through` wliicli tl i -gas isriiowing act" as' discharged from the producer .Without gasification andv which would otherwise pass to the scrubber,- thusreducing in-large measure'the usual work of Washing. When this matter, consistin largely ofeearbon and tar,` has accumulate in the chamber through which the gas has been-owin (the matterin 'the other cham-` ber havin een burned out), the valves are 90 e gas is passedV through the chamberw-hich has, been cleansed and the deposits in the -otherchamber are ignited. j The come and 5'- convert, or aidthe gas discharged fromthe producer inA converting, the`A water in the boilers 1l "and, 11-V intosteam, which is carried to theproducer to aid combustion therein.- f -f -In thelfcr'm of the invention illustrated inl Fig. Il,l tle\" producer 2O discharges gas through` its outlet passage 21, 4.controlled by the valvev 22,' to the 'chamb'er23, with the, lower partei-which the 'passage is connectcheckers -or checkered Varches 24, 245 and 2 4!! above the discharge end; of. the passage'21 and the heater 2,5 above vthe arches, the heater being in the path of the gas flowing to the outlet passage 26 which is connected with" the upper part of the chamber and in the path of `the products of combustion yiiowing-to the Patented Dec. 6,-
to the base of 'the-producer heatlng waff@ I chimney 27 which is built upon the Wallv of and leads -from the chamber, the chimney containing the' valve 28. The chamber 23 is divided by the arches 24, 24 and 24 into spaces or compartments 23', in each of whichy gas flowing through the immediately anterior arch expands with reduction of velocity and deposition of solids, which is facilitated by the baiiing influence of the succeeding arches. The heater has the inlet pipe29f for delivering air or water thereto and the outlet pipe 30 for carrying the volatile products, under control o the valve 30'-, from the heater foruse in the operations.
The pipe 30 is connected witharpipe 3l having passages'or nozzles 32, 32,-32 and 32,l which discharge under control of the respective valves 33, 33', 33, and 33,. into the chamber 23, as when air is heated in the heater. i
In the operation ofthe modified construe tion, the valve 22 being open and 28 closed, gas lowing from the producer through the arches in the 4chamber 1s baied and matters that have not been 'gasified are deposited.l
The valve 22 bein closed and 28 being open,
the deposits co ected .by the checkered arches are burned and the products of combustion utilized in raising the temperature of the fluid in the heater, for the purposes. specified.
l Having 1. The improvements in the manufacture of gas, which comprise a gas producer, independent ofsaid producer a. pair of chamdescribed my invention, vI claim:
bers having ,valved chimneys, a 'passage for conveying gas from said producer, passages connected with said passa e for conveylng gas to the respectlve cham ers, a reverslng valve for connecting the passa e from the producer with the passa es tot e chambers respectively, passages t rough which said chambers discharge, a valve for alternately closing one andopening the other of said last named passages andbaffles in the re.- spective chambers thereto and therefrom.
2. The improvements 1n the marmfa'cturel between the passages thereto'and therefrom, and heatersy in the Y respective chambers in the pat-hs of the products of combustion flowing to said chimneys.
In witness whereof I have. hereuntoset my name this 11th day of September A. D.
1908, in the presence of the subscribing wit-l nesses. v
WM. B. HUGHES.
