Application filed July 8, 1909. Serial No. 506,556.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RAFFERTY,
a'citizen of the United States, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loom-Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of loom hand threaded shuttles, in which the thread is guided from the bobbin into the delivery eye of the shuttle by hand.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved construction in thread eyes for loom shuttles, which is highly efficient and serviceable, and capable of inexpensive and economical manufacture.
A further object is to provide a thread eye for shuttles which will render the shuttle easily and quickly threaded.
With these, and further objects as will hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which,

Referring now more particularly to said drawings,.l indicates the shuttle body having formed therein the usual bobbin cavity 2, 3 is the thread leading from the nose end of the bobbin 4L to be threaded in the thread eye and thence through the delivery eye.
Sunk into the top of the shuttle and extending into the body thereof is a substantially oval cavity 5 as indicated in Fig. 1. Said cavity is connected to the bobbincavity 2, throughout the height of cavity 5 by means of a throat 6" which extends centrally and longitudinally of the shuttle body between said cavities. Extending at right angles to the cavity 5 toward the delivery side of the shuttle, and entering said cavity 5 at a point adjacent its conjunction with throat 6 is a circular hole 7 Extending from said cavity 5 toward the delivery side of said shuttle body but having a downward inclination from said cavity 5 is a finger cavity or opening 7 the outer end of said opening occurring mid-way of the height of said shuttle body. A pin 8 is located in the throat at one of the corners thereof neXt to the cavity 5. Seated within the finger cavity or opening 7 and flush with the outer side of the shuttle body is a circular member or ring 9, which may be designated the thread ring. The thread ring may be a driven fit or may be held in the finger cavity by any well-known means. The thread ring 9 may be formed with a number of eyes either singly or in pairs to form a multiple delivery eye, as shown in the drawings. The thread ring 9 is formed with two sets or pairs of eyes l0 10 which cooperate with the thread guides 11 to form a simple threading means. Said thread guides 11 comprise, in preference, T-shaped pins, having the arms of the T bent downwardly and inwardly to form partially inclosed openings 12 with the leg of the pin. The thread guides 11 are mounted by means of their leg portion between the eyes of a pair of eyes l0 10 in any suitable manner, as by riveting, or they may be driven through said thread ring 9 and into the wood of the shuttle body, and when seated the ends of the T project into the eyes 10 10, forming partially closed openings 12 12.
It is evident that a single-eyed thread guide may be employed instead of a doubleeyed member, as described.
While I have described the thread ring as circular, I may on occasion employ rings other than circular in shape, as oval, or only partially circular and any number of thread guides, either single or double, may be used and they may be located in any desired position in the thread ring.
In operation, the thread fed from the bobbin, passes through the throat 6 and by the pin 8, when it is passed by the finger through the thread ring 9 and into one of the guide eyes 12. tain greater friction the thread may be 'passed through an additional guide eye.
I do not desire in the fulfilment of the appended claims and the construction of the device to be limited to the particular structure herein set forth, as it is obvious that my device is susceptible of various details of construction which do not depart from the spirit of the invention claimed.

If it is desired to obclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. In combination with a shuttle body having a bobbin cavity and an opening in its delivery side, a ring located within said opening, said ring being formed with spaced apertures, a T-shaped metallic thread guide having its leg extending in one aperture and the ends of its head seated in the other of said apertures, said body having a throatlike passage leading from said bobbin cavity, and a passage efiecting communication between the throat and ring.
2. In combination with a shuttle body having a bobbin cavity, and formed with an opening in its delivery side, a ring located within said opening, said ring being formed with a plurality of apertures, and a thread guide consisting of a body portion having one end seated in one of said apertures, and the other end being formed with an outwardly projecting arm bent inwardly to extend into one of the apertures formed in said ring to form guide eyes for the thread.
3. In combination with a shuttle body having a cavity and an opening in its dellvery side, hollow element disposed in said opening and formed with apertures, a thread guide composed of a member having a leg and an arm, said leg extending in one of said apertures and said arm having its free end extending in another of said apertures to thereby form a thread eyebetween said leg and arm of said member and the portion of said element therebetween.
4. In combination with a shuttle body having a cavity and a delivery opening, a hollow element disposed in said opening, and a member having an arm and a leg secured to said element so that a thread eye is formed between said arm, said leg and that portion of the element located between the arm and leg.
