To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH D. LACROIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of'New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to cigar machines, and particularly to a wrapper cutting mechanism with which a transferrer is intimately related and coperates. It is proposed to use the wrapper cutting mechanism and transferrer with any preferred wrapper applying mechanism; and the wrapper cutting mechanism includes a wrapper cutting die, the same comprising in part a perforated plate subject to suction and constituting a wrapper transferrer. This plate with the die is capable of adjustment to any angle desired, may be raised or lowered or otherwise adjusted as desired, and raised to support a wrapper while being cut. Means are employed to swing the wrapper transferrer with the superposed wrapper thereon to bring it in coopera-tive relation with regard to wrapper feeding mechanism, the latter being subject to suction, but permits the wrapper to be deposited from the trans'- ferrer onto the feeder mechanism. Means -is provided for cutting 0E suction from the vantages pertaining thereto will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The mechanism embodying the features of the invention and which will be presently described originally formed a part of my pending application Serial No. 220,920; and only so much of the mechanism has been shown in the accompanying drawings as is Specification of Letters Patent.

deemed necessary to a full understanding of the wrapper cutting mechanism, the aforesaid application No. 220,920 disclosing the mechanism interposed between this die or wrapper cutting mechanism and the remaining part of the machine as illustrated by the said application Serial No. 220,920.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a plan view of the wrapper cutting and wrapper transferring mechanism embodying the features of the invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of the wrapper cutting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing more particularly the mechanism for effecting the adj ustment of the wrapper cutting die. Fig. iis a detail view of the mechanism for adjusting the wrapper cutting rollers.
The wrapper cutting and transferring mechanism comprises a die 132 which is of a shape to conform to that of the wrapper, said die being supported upon a suitable platform 133 and is adapted for adjustment vertically and horizontally, as shown in Fig. 3, to cause proper cooperation between it and the means for cutting a wrapper placed thereon. Co-acting with the die is a wrapper transferrer 13st, the same comprising a hollow casing provided With a curved neck 135 which is journaled upon a hollow shaft 136 connecting through a flexible conduit 137 with a suitable suction device, not shown. The free end of the transferrer carries a flat perforated plate 138 which also conforms to the shape of the wrapper and is adapted to fit within the walls of the die. The suction on the plate 138 operates to hold the wrapper firmly thereon While being cut to the proper shape to form a wrapper and also while being transferred to the feeder mechanism, presently to be described. The die is hollow, as clearly shown by Fig. 2, and the plate 138 serves as a wrapper receiving and transferring member and forms at intervals the bed or receiving plate of the die and is alternately movable into and outwardly from the latter. In other words, a portion of the die constitutes both the wrapper receiving and transferring means, because the transferrer as an entirety is connected to and forms part of the die.
It is of course essential that during the cutting and transferring operation of the transferrer, suction should be maintained first upon the leaf and then upon the. Wrapper; and it is also essential that the suction should gradually be released so that when the transferrer is in position over the Wrapper feeder the Wrapper may readily be deposited thereon. The suction is gradually relieved from the Wrapper as the latter is moved Ltoward and over the Wrapper feeder to permit the feeder to take the Wrapper from the member or plate 13S, it being obvious that if. the suction in the Wrapper feeder as show-n by Fig. 2is greater than in the Wrapper transferrer, thev wrapper will be readily drawn-toward the feeder. To ef'- fect this result-suitable valve mechanism 139 is providedwvhich coacts With the suction pipe 140, as shoivn in Fig. 1, said valve mechanism being operatedthrough the medium of a cam disk 141: mounted on a shaft 142, the cam.beingprovidedin its face with av groove on race Which is engaged' by aroller. bearing 143 carriedlby one end of aV rod'144, the otherend ofwvhich is connected With the lever of the valve mechanism, as shovvn in Fig. 1; rFhe conduit 137 connects With the pipe 140 through the valve mechanism 138, the latter mechanism being interposed between the said conduit: and' pipe. Motion is imparted to the shaft 142 by suitable means to effect the result sought.` The groove or race of the cam disk 141 is so shaped that. the suction is gradually decreasedv onr the Wrapper as the transferrer projects over the feeder mechanism, and when thetransferrer is in operative position With respect: to the latter mechanism, the suction is entirely cut off.Y To avoid the possibility of= any residual` suction in the transferrer preventing the Wrapper from leavin-g. the transferrer andk assuming positio-n on the Wrapper feeder, there-is providedl avent 147 which' always tends, even When suction is on thetransferrer, to destroyit, but as the areaofthe suction vpipe is greater than that of thevent. it Will: have no appreciable effect While the-suction is `in full force or is being diminished; but as soon as the suction4 is cut o entirely this vent will destroy any remaining suction and. permit the Wrapper to bev deposited yonto the feeder mechanism bythe suction coperating therewith as disclosed in my` copending applications Sr. Nos. 126,7 39 and 220,920.`

As the rack is reciprocated in opposite directions through the action of the cam race, the shaft 148 will be overturned in opposite directions and thereby operate the transferrer in a manner that will be readily understood, or to transmit the cut Wrapper from the cutting mechanism to the Wrapper feeder.
The means for severing a leaf placed upon the die comprises in this instance a pair of conical rollers 156, it being obvious that if preferred only one may be employed, and these rollers are carried by an arm 157 mounted upon a vertical postv 158. The rollers are designed-to travel through an arc of a circle sufficient to traverse the die and to move out of the path of movement' of the transferrer, and this motion is imparted to these rollers through the medium of an arm 159secured to the post 15S and carrying a roller bearing. 160 Which Works in a cam grooveor race 161 in the face of a cam Wheel161a mounted on the shaft 142, the cam race 161 beingI so timed with relation to the race 155 that the rollers Will have traversed the die and returned to ltheir normal position before the transferrer starts to As before stated, the die is capable of l various adj ustments in order to insure proper presentation to the Wrapper feeding mechanism. To effect horizontal adjustment of the die. and also v.of the `transferrer, there is provided a plurality ofclips 162 which bear upon the periphery of the plate 163 supporting the die, anditwvill beseen that by loosening the screws 164iholdng-the clips in position, the pla-te 163may be turned to vary the angle of presentationof the Wrapperv to the Wrapper feedingimechanism, thus to 1insure proper application ofthe Wrapper to the bunch. To effect vertical adjustment of the die the plate 165 carrying it is provided 110 on its under side with inclined faced lugs or Y surfaces 166 and1167` which are adapted to coactl with similar lugs or ` surfaces 168 and 169 on the plate 163-,I and-it will be seen that by moving the plate in a circle itmay be raised andflowered as desired. Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, and an overturning wrapper transferrer forming the bed for the die and movable into and outwardly from the said die and provided with means movable in reverse directions through the die to dispose the transferrer within said die.
^ 2. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having` a fixed position, and an overturning wrapper transferrer coacting therewith and embodying suction means projecting through and also movable in reverse directions through the die and operating to accurately position the transferrer within the die.
3. In a cigar machine, a Wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, an overturning wrapper transferrer coacting therewith and having suction means connected thereto and movable in reverse directions through t-he die, and suction releasing means coacting with the transferrer.
4. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, an overturning` wrapper transferrer coacting therewith and provided with a flat perforate face movable within the walls of the said die, and suction means connected to and serving as the support for the transferrer and movable into and through the die.
5. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having` a fixed position, a. wrapper transferrer coacting therewith and having an overturning` movement alternately in opposite directions and provided with a tubular member movable through the die, suction means coperating with the tubular member, and means for cutting off suction from the transferrer at intervals and for partially destroying the eect of suction upon the wrapper while being cut and transferred.
G. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, an oscillatory wrapper transferrer coacting therewith and having a portion movable therethrough, suction means combined with the transferrer for retaining` a wrapper thereon, and means for cutting off suction from the transferrer at intervals, the transferrer being provided with a vent for completely destroying the effect of the suction to which the wrapper has been subjected after the suction has been cut off from the wrapper.
7. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, an oscillatory wrapper transferrer having a member movable into the die to fori'n the bed of the latter and a curved hollow arm movable through the die in reverse directions, suction means communicating with said arm, and means cooperating with the die for cutting a wrapper.
S. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, a .laterally oscillatory wrapper transfer-rer which forms a movable bed for the die and receives the wrapper as it is cut, thc said transferrer being provided with a curved tubular member movable through the die in reverse directions, suction means commiuiicating with said tubular member, and means coperating with the die for cutting the wrapper.
9. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, and a laterally oscillatory wrapper transferrer having a hollow casing and movable into and outwardly from the die to receive and hold the cut wrapper and a curved tubular supporting member movable in reverse directions through the die and serving as a suction means for the transferrer.
10. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, and a wrapper transferrer having a member laterally movable into and out of vertical alinement with respect to the die and which at intervals forms the wrapper receiving means within the die after the wrapper is cut, the transferrer also having a curved tubular support movable through the die and serving as a suction means for the transferrer.
ll. Ina cigar cutting machine, a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, and a wrapper receiving and transferring means laterally movable into and out of vertical alinement with respect to the die and having a curved tubular suction member movable through the die in reverse directions.
l2. In a cigar machine, a hollow die structure having a fixed position, and a transferring means movable into and outwardly from the die structure and laterally away from said structure and forming the wrapper receiving part of the die structure, the transferring means having suction means coperating therewith and including a curved tubular member serving as a support for the transferring means and projecting through and movable in reverse directions through the die structure.
13. In a cigar machine, a fixed wrapper cutting die having a laterally swinging bed on which the wrapper is cut and serving as a transferring element for the wrapper having an overturning movement and also movable into and outwardly from the said fixed die.
14. In a cigar machine, the combination with a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, of a wrapper receiving and transferring member having an overturning laterally swinging movement into and outwardly from the die and provided with suction means having a portion movable in reverse directions through the die.
15. In a cigar machine, the combination with a wrapper cutting die having a fixed position, a laterally transferrer movable into and outwardly from the die and provided with a fiat overturning member and a curved tubular arm,

17. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting'v die adjustable vertically and at any desired angle, a laterally oscillatory and-overturning wrapper transferrer serving as a bed on which the wrapper is cut andinovable into and outwardly from thedie, and means movable over the die and transferrerv for cutting a wrapper.
18. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting.
die having a fixed position, a laterally oscillatory and overturning wrapper transferrer co-acting therewith and movable into and outwardly therefrom, and a pair of coneshaped rollers associated in close relation and automatically movable over the die at intervals and rotated by frictional contact with the latter to cut a wrapper.
19. In a cigar machine, the combination of an adjustable. wrapper cuttinoF die, an oscillatory and overturning trans errer c0- acting therewith and movable into andoutwardly therefrom, adjustable cone-shaped rollers rotated by frictional contact with the die to effect cutting of a wrapper, and
swinging wrapper l mechanism for moving'the rollersat intervals over the die and transferrer.
20. In a cigar machine, a fixed wrapper cutting die, as oscillatory and overturning wrapper transferrer movable intoand outwardly from the die, and adjustable coneshaped rollers closely associated andhaving mechanical means associated therewith for moving them at intervals over the die to effect cutting ofthe wrapper.
21. In a cigar machine, a wrapper cutting die having' a normally fixed position with relation to an interior space, a cooperating cutting means movable over the die, mechanism for moving the cutting means at intervals over the said die, a wrapper support located at a distance from the die, and a laterally swinging wrapper transferrer having an overturning movement and movable into the die to form the cutting bed of the latter and also serving to deliver a cut wrapper to the support.
22. The combination of a die having a fixed position aroundan interior space, cooperating cutting means movable over the die and having mechanism for operating the same at intervals, anda wrapper transferrer having means for laterally swinging and overturning the same alternately into the interior of the die and then into delivery position out of vertical alinement with respect to and at a distance from the die.
