To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. D. BRANS- 0011, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Blind Locks and Catches, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in combination blind locks and catches, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified, which while simply constructed and resembling the ordinary catch in appearance may be locked to prevent opening of the blind.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereof: Figure 1 is a vertical section of the improvement in place, the section bearing on the line 11 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a front View of the casing with the cover removed, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the looking bolt.

The embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 consists of a casing 1 having a cover 2, the cover and casing being secured to the blind 3 by screws 4 passing through both cover and casing, and engaging the blind, a latch 5 and a catch plate 6.

The catch plate 6 is provided at one end with a catch consisting of a transverse ridge 8, whose outer face 9 is perpendicular, and the inner face 10 inclined, and the plate is secured to the sill 11 of the window by screws 12. v

The latch 5 is of the ordinary form, comprising a body 14 pivoted within the casing opening or slot in the cover, and a nose 16 for engaging the catch, and a finger piece or lug 17 for engagement in lifting the latch to disengage it from the catch.

The body of the latch is provided inside the casing with an angular lug 18 on its upper face, and the locking bolt 19, shown more particularly in Fig. 3, is adapted to engage behind the lu to prevent lifting of the latch. The said bolt consists of a bar, provided at one end with a lateral lug 20 whose outer face is inclined from below outwardly, forming a wedge 22 for cooperating with an oppositely inclined face on the lug 18. The bar is also provided at its center with a cylindrical extension 23, having a reduced outer end 2 1, and a recess 25 in its end, which is polygonal in cross section.

The casing cover 2 is provided with a circular opening 26 in register with the extension 23.of the bolt, and concentric with the extension, and the edge of the opening is undercut or beveled on its inner side as shown in Fig. l. A shield or escutcheon 2'7 is inserted in the opening, the outer face 28 of the escutcheon being rounded, and fitting against the bevelec edge of the opening.

The escutcheon is provided with a central opening for receiving the reduced portion of the extension, and the inner end of the opening is enlarged to fit the body of the extension, and a shoulder is formed between the enlargement and the outer end of the opening, which fits against the shoulder 29 formed between the body of the extension and the reduced portion.

The above described construction holds the bolt from outward movement, and the opposite face of the bolt from the extension is provided with a lug 30 which engages an opening in the rear wall of the casing, the bolt swinging on the lug30 and on the escutcheon.

The parts are assembled by first engaging the lug 30 with the opening in the rear wall of the casing, then placing the escutcheon, and afterward the cover. The bolt is then free to swing, and when the cam face 22 engages the cam face 21 of the lug on the latch, the latch is firmly held against lifting movement.

The bolt is operated by inserting a key with a cross section similar to that of the recess into the said recess, and oscillating the key. A plate spring 31 is arranged trans- Versely of the end 33 of the bolt remote from the lug 20, the said end being rounded from above downward, and the ends of the spring are held by pins 32 on the casing.

The spring acts to hold the bolt in either the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, or in the dotted line position, and when in the dotted line position, thelatch is free to operate in the usual manner. Since the key must be inserted from within, that is, from the inner side of the blind, there is no possibility of tampering with the lock when the blind is closed.

I claim- 1. The combination with the blind and the comprising a lug on its rear face the end adjacent to the latch a lug provided with a beveled face for engaging the face of the lug on the latch to prevent lifting of the latch, the pivotal mounting of the said bolt engaging the casing, and a cylindrical extension on the opposite face, said extension having its free end reduced and provided with a recess polygonal in cross section, and an escutcheon having an opening for receiving the reduced end, the casing having an opening provided with undercut walls for engagement by the edge of the escutcheon.

A look and catch of the character specificd, comprising a casing, a latch pivoted at one end in the casing and extending laterally therefrom, a bolt having one end wedge shaped for engaging behind the end of the latch to prevent lifting thereof, said bolt comprising a bar pivoted in the casing at its center, a spring engaging the other end of the bolt for holding it in adjusted position, and a lateral extension at the center of the bolt extending out of the casing, and having a recess polygonal in cross section, for the purpose specified.

A device of the character specified, con1- prising a casing, a latch pivoted at one end in the casing, and extending laterally therefrom, the free end of the atch being provided with a nose and a finger piece, a catch for engagement by the nose, a bolt pivoted in the casing and having a wedge shaped end for engaging behind the end of the latch to prevent swinging movement thereof, said bolt having a lateral extension projecting beyond the casing .and provided with a polygonal'recess for receiving a key, and an escutcheon rotatable in the casing, and having an opening for the extension.

A device of-the character specified, comprising a casing, a latch pivotedat one end in the casing, and extending laterally the're-- from, the free end of the latch beingprovided with. a nose and a finger piece, a catch for engagement by the nose, a bolt pivoted in the casing and having a wedge shaped end for engaging behind the end of the latch to prevent swinging movement thereof, a spring for retaining the bolt in adjusted position, projecting beyond the casing and provided with means for engagement by a key where by to swing the bolt, andan escutcheon rotatable in the casing and having an opening 7 for the extension.

5. A device of the character specified, comprising a casing, a latch pivoted at one end in the casing, and extending laterally therefrom, the free end of the latch being provided with a nose and a finger piece, a catch for engagement by the nose, a bolt pivoted in the casing and having a wedge shaped end for engagement behind the end of the latch to prevent swinging movement there of, a spring for retaining the bolt in adjusted position,said bolt having a lateral extension projecting beyond the casing and provided with means for engagement by a key whereby to swing the bolt.
