SAW FEEDIN G DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 7, 1910.

WILLIAM J. SMITH, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
SAW-FEEDING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Feeding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices of the above type, having more particular reference to devices for advancing a saw to the work, that is, a log or timber', from the underside thereof, and the primary object thereof is to provide a comparatively simple construction that can be readily applied to the log or timber, and will operate in an eiiicient manner to yieldingly support the saw and feed the same upwardly as the cutting operation progresses.
With the above and other objects in view, to be referred toas my description progresses, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts described in the following speciiication and more particularly pointed out in my annexed claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawino, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure l is a view in front elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2
4 is a perspective illustrating the device as in use.
In carrying out my invention I provide a supporting frame 1 on which acarrier 2 is slidably supported for vertical adjustment, said carrier being provided with a guiding support 3, preferably consisting of a grooved vbearing roller journaled on an angular extension or arm 4 of the carrier. A resilient means, as a spring 5, serves to elevate or advance carrier 2.
In the present embodiment of my invention frame l comprises spaced side bars l having threaded lower end portions provided with clamping nuts 6 between which is held a head 7 in which carrier 2 is slidably engaged, as shown. Carrier 2 conveniently consists of a Stem or rod whose lower end portion is bent or projected to one side to form the extension or arm 4f. The upper end portion of this carrier is removably se- Speciication of Letters Patent.

cured to a slide 8, slidably supported on the slide bars 1.
While other means may be provided for securing the supportin frame in position, as for example, as indicated in Fig. 2, for supporting the saw for operation on a log from the underside thereof, a simple and eiiicient meansv resides in the provision of an integral dog 9 provided on the upper end portions of the frame side bars l', as shown.
In the operation of my device, dog 9 is withdrawn from the log, when the limit of advancement of the carrier 2 by spring 5 is reached, then rengaged with the log with the frame l in a more elevated position to again bring spring 5 under the required tension, as will be readily understood.v
Spring 5 is conveniently confined between a fixed collar 10, of carrier 2, and head 7, the latter being adjustably held by nut 6, as before set forth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s:
l. A saw feeding device consisting of a frame comprising spaced side bars, a dog on said frame for securing the saine to the work, a slide slidably engaged with the side bars of said frame, a head adjustably engaged with the lower end portions of said side bars, a carrier secured to said slide and projecting through said head, a support for the saw provided on said carrier and projecting outwardly therefrom, and resilient means for elevating said carrier having one end portion disposed for adjustment by adjustment of said head.
2. A saw feeding device consisting of a frame comprising spaced side bars, a head removably secured to the lower end portions of said bars, a dog onsaid frame for securing the same to the work, a member extending between and slidably engaged with said side bars, a carrier fixed to said member and projecting through said head and guided thereby, said carrier having its depending end portion provided with a saw engaging support dis osed to one side of said frame, and resi ient means on said frame for adjusting said carrier.
3. A saw feeding' device consisting of a said carrier disposed to one. side of said frame Comprising spaced side bars having frame. 10 their upper end portions directed toward Signed at Seattle, Vashington this 14th one another and provided With an angularly day of February 1910.
