Letters Zeient No. 97,734, dated December 7, 1869.
INEPRQVEMEHT Iiii' BREEGE-LUADENG FIRE-ARMS.
To all whom ii may concern:
Be itknown that I, Winona: GRJVARB, of New Yo'r {in the county of New York, and State of New York, have invented a, new and useful Improved Breech-Loading Fire-Arm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full, clear, and exnordescrlr-- tlon thereof, reference being hurl to the acoompnnying drawing, in Wliich-.

Figure 1f), lvrizont-al section of a portion of the breeclnpieoe, sliding bolt, and the looking-device, tee ken in the line 5 z of- Like lettersdesiguete like parts in all the figures.
The nature of my invention eonsists-- First, in forming the firing-pin oi a holt-gun, with a groove around it, which receives the end of 2. pin, which is ilinacillid to a spring that is secured to the sliding bolt, the object of this pint of my invention n, taken in the some the bolt has be. given quarter being to hold the firing-pin hoe-la inside the sliding holQwhe-n it is desired to withdraw a loaded shell from the gun, i-nus preveufiing the extractor from throwing it out. and also pr-zn euthig the eooidoni ei discharge of the cartridge during-its. witluirn-wol.
Second, in the peonlizir construetlon and a rage meat of the-loo 1 device, for holding; one operative ports in a. fixed p tion when desired, T"- enz hle those my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction zind'operntion.
in the accompanying drawing- 15 represents n spring in 21, recess in the side of the sliding bole fl, and near its rear end.
One end of this sprlx c is secured to the elf. lug bolt, and on its other end, is a. pin, 7), which fits inio a hole iii-the bolt When the bolt is in proper position for being withdrawn, thlssnring is on top, 'as seen in fig. l, and is under the sliding cup B, as seen ligs. 2 and 3, which forces the pin i) through the hole in the sliding holt A, so that, by throwing the boil; A forward, the gun skilled in the are to make and use is cooked, the pin b enters the groove 0 in the firing 'pin 0, and holds it; hook until its is released by the pulling of the trigger, thus allowing fihe ooh; so be withdrawn, while the firing-pin is held inside, as shown in 2.
The operation of lending and firing; is as follows:
The sliding bolt A is drawn back, and the cartridge placed in the chamber of the breech-piece. By pushing the sliding'holb lhrwurd, the cartridge is driven into the barrel. At the some time the gun is cocked, as the sliding bolt, in its forward movement, carries along with if, the firing-pin 0, until its shoulder 41 strikes the upper end of the trigger-bolt, which projeers up into the sliding bolt through the L-shaped slot D, and holds it until the sliding bolt redo-hostile iimifi of ire forward movement. At the some time the pin 5, on the spring a, enters the groove 0 of the firingpin, and holds the said firing-pin while the sliding bolt is in position for being moved either backward orforword, out when the sliding bolt is given a. quarter turn to the right, after the hell; has been pushed forward, as the spring a, moves from under the cover B, ii; draws the pin 1; from the groove 0 in the firing-pin, which is then held. by the trigger-bolt.
The two extreme positions of the spring a and the pin 1; are shown in figs, 3 and 4. As will be seen by reference to figil, the roar ddge of the shit I) is parallel to the sectional screw-threads on the bolt- A,nml when the firing-pin is held back by the pin 1), the shoulder :5 projeois beyond the rein edge of the slot. As the bolt A. is turned to the right, the edges of the roan end of the slot will move against the side of the trigg -l oli thereby iorcing the shoulder d of the firing-pin huoir to the rear edge of the slot, thus releasinthe pin 1) from the groove o in the firing-pin.
Fig. ii shows a modification of my invention for holding the firing-pin.
V instead of the cover B bearing directly against the spring i out at recess, in which is secured a spsing, wine-l1 hears dlrcobly on the spring a.
end of the firing-pin hol'oro ih reaches the groove 0.
a represent the handle of the bolt, which made in two parts.
The chamber inside the bolt A extends hack beyond the centre of the handle.
in the handle E is a hole, in which is inserted a rod or spindle, e, around which is a spiral spring, which rests on u. shoulder at the lower end of the hole.-
On the upper end of the rod 0 is placed the top or r nd of the handle. When it is desired to hold the firing-pin back, push the bolt forward until. lhe groove c of the firing-pin is directly under the rod 0; then, by
The object. of this is to allow the pin b to ride easily over the rear pressing down-the end Eof the handle, the lower end of the rod 0 will be forced into the groove 0 in the firing-pin, and held there until the end of the handle is released from pressure.
- Figs. 8, 9, and 10, show the device for locking the I tion, j, the face of which is on a line with the apex of the sectional screw.
In this projection j is a.recess, k, into which the pin I: moved when it is desired -to lock the bolt, as shown in figs. 8 and 10.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim, and desire tos'ecure byLetters-Pat- 1. The coinbinationof the hammer and firing-pin 0, provided with the groove 0 at the rear end thereof,
with the automatic catch 71, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of the bolt A, spring a, and pin 1), with the hanimer and firing-pin 0, formed with the groove 0 at the rear end thereof, substantiallyas shown and described.
