WATER-POWER ING -DRILL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 19, 1909. Serial No. 478,849.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL A. HANSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Power Mining-Drills;
operative position and with a slidable frame mounted thereon carrying the operating mechanism and improved means for moving the last-mentioned frame relative to the first-mentioned frame.
A further object of the invention is to providein association with a Water wheel and means for mounting the same, improved connection between such water wheel and the drill hammer. A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of the class improved means for conducting water from the source of power to the drill and discharge it therethrough.
-. With these and other objects in view, the
invention comprises certain novel constructlons, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of the machine in top plan with a part of the housing removed. Fig. 2 is a View of the mechanism in side elevation as from side indicated by arrow 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. on line .33 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a view-of the drill chuck and surrounding parts in end elevation with the drill removed. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the shoulder of the drill taken on lines 55 of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 6 is a detail side elevation of the lever and means for disengaging the retaining pawl. of the main supporting frame .of'the device.

A frame 10 is provided supported upon legs 11 which may be of any desired. or customary formation and provided, iffound desirable, with pointed extremities as shown at Fig. 2 and maintained rigid relative to the frame 10 by.means of clamps 12 controlled by" any approved pressure applying means as the screws 13. -The frame 10 is provided along opposite sides with guide- Ways 14 and 15 within which is slidably mounted a frame 16.
Upon the under side of the frame 10 a a pulley 18 and about such pulley'passes a cable 19 terminating at one end in a hook 20 engaging an eye 21 rigid with the frame 16. At its other end the cable 19 is provided with a yielding portion 'shown as the spring 22 and continued by means, of a strap 23 passing; over and about a drum 24. The drum 24 is 'journaled .upon a shaft 25 and carries rigidly secured thereto a ratchet wheel 26. Pivoted upon the shaft 25 is a lever 27 carrying a pawl 28 as shown at Figs. 2 and 6 engaging the teeth of the ratchet 26. The shaft 25 is part of the frame 10 and carried also by such frame is a dog or retaining pawl 29 secured by means of a spring 30 to the frame 10 in any approved manner as by the clip 31. Fig. 7 is a top plan viexv '70 stud 17 is provided upon which is journaled 29 normally engages the teeth of the ratchet 26 and prevents return movement of the same but the lever 27 is provided with a curved nose 32 adapted when moved over to a considerable distance to engage the pawl 29 and move it out of engagement with the ratchet 26 so that if the pawl 28 is disengaged at the same time the drum 24 may be rotated in return direction. It will be apparent that by rotatingthe drum 24 as indicated the band or belt 23 is wound thereupon and the other ends of such member 100 proved source by any ordinary means asthe flexible hose 36. Y
Rigidly carried upon the shaft 34 1s a crank wheel 37 having a wrist pin 38 to which is pivoted the pitman 39. The pitman 39 at the end opposite the wrist pin 38 is preferably bifurcated to form the arms 40 and 41, the extremities of which are pivoted upon a pin 42 forming a cross head having guiding members 43 slidably mounted within the guide-ways produced by the frame 16 and the strips 44.
The cross pin 42 is. rovided centrally with an opening throng which extends a bar 45 slidable therein and provided upon opposite sides of the cross pin 42 are springs 46 and 47. To the end of the bar 45 farthest removed from the wrist pin 38, a cylinder 48 is rigidly secured and at the opposite end of such bar a tension nut 49 is provided. Also slidably held by the guide members 44 is a hammer 50 rigidly and adjustably secured to the cylinder 48 by means of screws 51. It will, therefore, be apparent that" as the cross pin 42 is reciprocated the bar 45 will likewise be reciprocated moving therewith the cylinder 48 and hammer 50, and that such movement will be cushioned in opposite directions by the springs 46 and 47. To the frame 16 a chuck 52 is secured by means of a keeper 53 which permits a rotary movement thereof, such movement being imparted to the chuck manually by means of a lever 54 movable in a slot 55. The chuck is provided with a socket preferably multian'gular and proportioned to receive a drill shank 56 loosely therein. The drill 57 of which the chuck 56 forms a part is preferably formed with a central or axial bore 58 and with a shoulder 59 which prevents the drill from being inserted too far into or through the socket of chuck 52.
The shoulder 59 is provided with an opening 60 into which is inserted a nozzle 61 maintained in position in such opening by a spring 62. The nozzle 61 is preferably connected by means 'of a flexible pipe 63 with a pipe 64 communicating with the pipe 35 and flow of water through the pipe 64 and flexible pipe 63 controlled by means of a manually operated cock 65. Thecross pin'42, hammer 50 and pitman 39 are preferably covered by a housing 66 with a similar housing'numbered 67 below the parts, such hous-6 5 is also. provided rigid with the frame 16 extending through such frame and enga ing and movable within a slot 69 forme in the frame 10. Such guide pin engaging within the slot prevents lateral displacement of the frame 16.
In operation the device is set in the position required by means of the legs 11 and is moved to its work by the manipulation of the lever 27. The spring 22 permits the necessary re-coil of the parts carried movably by the frame 10 but such re-coil is minimized by the springs. 46 and 471 As the wheel rotates .it is apparent that the wrist pin 38 will rotatemoving therewith the pitman and causing the cross head to reciprocate carrying therewith the hammer 50 which strikes the'extremity of the shank 56 of the drill. Water admitted to the pipes 35 and 64 passes through the flexible ipe 63. and to the central bore of the drill' rom which it is discharged as required to wash out the rock main frame, a lever and ratchet adapted to advance the second frame upon the main frame, means for connecting the ratchet and main frame, a hammer mounted to reciprocate upon the second frame, a cross head mounted to reciprocate upon the second frame, yielding connection between the cross head and hammer, a drill in position to be struck by the hammer, a water wheel, and means to connect the water wheel with the cross head.
