To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. McKnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Pasteurizer, of which the following is a specification.
This device relates to means for either raising or lowering the temperature of liquids, depending upon whether it is to be used as the heating or cooling element of a pasteurizing system, and the object of this invention is to provide a device for such purpose which shall be effective and easily cleaned, and which can be constructed at a moderate cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of this improved device. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line 22 in Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a horizontal cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail of the fastening device for the cover.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The construction shown in the drawings is especially designed for use in a system such as shown in the former McKee Patent No. 945,404, dated January 4th, 1910. The outside shell 1, preferably a cylinder, may be provided with a bottom flange 2 between which and the table 3 is secured a bottom 4. Legs 5 or any other desirable means may be employed to support the shell. Connected to the shell are thimbles 6 and 7 for the admission of the heating or cooling vapors or liquids. A flange 8 at the top of the shell may be provided with any desired number of pairs of lugs 9, between which may be pivoted the eye-bolts 10, on the pins 11. An upwardly-convex top or cover 12 is provided with slots 13 into which these eye-bolts may swing, and when the wingnuts 14 are screwed down, the diaphragm 15 will be securely held in position. The top 12 may be provided with a connection 16 to receive the union-nut 17 which connects the same with a pipe 18.
The diaphragm 15 is provided with a number of slots 19, preferably radial, at which connect the flat tubes or pipes 20, in the same manner as illustrated in the former patent. These flat tubes may be braced by rods 22 secured to the pipes intermediate their ends. The lower ends of the tubes connect to a second diaphragm 23 at slots 24. Into the lower diaphragm may be screwed a rod 25 on the upper end of which is a nut 26 provided with a ring or eye 27, which nut and rod 25 stiffen the two diaphragms. Below the lower diaphragm is a downwardly-convex lower head 28, which is formed with a bearing face 29, adapted to form a tight joint with a bottom 4. Extending down from this lower head is a threaded tube 30, on which is screwed a nut 31 adapted to press the face 29 and the bottom 4 tightly together. The lower end of this threaded tube may connect to the pipe 33 by means of the union-nut 34.
The liquid to be heated or cooled may enter either from the top through the pipe 18, or from the bottom through the pipe 33, and pass out through the other pipe. In either case, the liquid will pass through the flat tubes 20, during which passage the temperature will be changed by the vapor or liquid within the outer shell 1, which vapor or liquid circulates through said shell by the pipes connected to the thimbles 6 and 7.
When it is desired to clean this device, the pipes 18 and 33 are disconnected by unscrewing the nuts 17 and 34. The wingnuts 14 are unscrewed and the bolts 10 are swung down from the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 to that shown in solid lines. The nut 31 is unscrewed, and the head 12 removed when the inner tubes 20, the diaphragms 15 and 23 and the lower head 28 can be lifted out of the shell as a unit by means of any hoisting device connecting to the ring 27. The interior of this shell is then perfectly free and every portion can be reached. A flat-nozzled steamjet can then be introduced in the slots 19 in the upper diaphragm and the interior of the tubes 20 thoroughly scalded out, the impurities passing from the space between the diaphragm 23 and head 28 to the passage in the connection 30. It will also be noticed that every portion of the exterior of these tubes 20 can be reached with a scrubbing brush. In case any impurities should be come baked to the interior surfaces of the tubes 20, the lower head 28 can be removed and fiat scrubbing brushes passed down through these tubes. The advantage of this construction is that the tubes'20 and their connections can be removed and every portion of the device thoroughly cleaned by merely swinging away the one connection pipe 18, all the other connections remaining in position. The space below the thimble 6 can be drained by means of the small cock 38.
The proportions and details of this construction can be readily changed by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I-Iavin now explained my improvements what I c aim tobe my invention and desire to secure'by Letters Patent is 1. In a pasteurizing device, the combination of an exterior shell, an upper head for the same, a diaphragm secured between said head and the upper edge of the shell, flat tubes extending downward from said dia phragm, a second diaphragm connected to the lower ends of the tubes, a lower head connected to said lower diaphragm and having a central extending portion projecting through an opening in the bottom of the outer shell, means for forming a fluid-tight joint between said lower head and bottom, and means for conducting fluids into said device for circulation through the tubes and to the outer shell. for circulation around the tubes.
2. In a pasteurizing device, the combination of a shell having a top and bottom, a series of flat tubes within the shell, dia phra gms connected to the upper and lower ends of the tubes, a downwardly convex head below said tubes and connected to the lower diaphragm, means for insuring a tight joint between the lower head and the bottom of the shell, and connections for the circulation of fluids through and around said tubes.
3. In a pasteurizing device, the combinationof a plurality of flat tubes, diaphragms at opposite ends of the tubes, outwardly convex heads of different diameters secured to said diaphragms to form chambers, connections to said heads through which fluids may flow to pass through said tubes, a shell removably connected to the larger head and surrounding the smaller head, and connections whereby fluids may circulate around said tubes within the shell.

In a pasteurizing device, the combination of a series of flat tubes, radially-slotted diaphragms connecting to opposite ends of the tubes, heads of diiir'erent diameters secured to said diaphragms, connections to said heads through which fluids may flow to pass through said tubes, a shell surroundingthe tubes and the smaller head, a flange at one end of said shell, fastening devices to form a fluid-tight joint between the flange and a diaphragm, a bottom for said shell, means to form a fluid-tight joint between the bottom and the smaller head adjacent to the connection to the same, and connections whereby fluids may circulate around said tubes within the shell.
