Be it known that I, JULrUs Korin'rz, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-EX- tractors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to a device for extracting keys for holding pulleys, wheels and other devices upon shafts, and its object is to provide a simple and convenient tool which may be readily engaged with a key in a shaft and is so arranged and constructed as to give ample power for the purpose.
A further object is to provide a tool adapted to engage the various sizes and forms of keys and which has the several advantages of the particular construction and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which,

As shown in the drawings 1 represents a frame of suitable shape and size within which a second open frame or carrier 2 is mounted to slide by providing slots 3 in the side members of the main frame engaged by pins 4: on the sides of the carrier 2. Mounted within the carrier 2 upon the rear end or cross wall 5 thereof is a circular disk or head 6 secured to the inner face of the wall by means of a stud bolt 7, said bolt being provided with a reduced and screwthreaded end to engage a screwthreaded opening in the wall and forming a shoulder 8 to engage the wall so that the disk 6 will turn freely upon the bolt between the face of the wall and the head of the bolt.
The disk or head 6 is provided with a series of notches 9 in its periphery, said notches being of differentsizes to fit the va rious sizes of keys, one of such keys being illustrated at .10 in Fig. 2, as applied to a grooved shaft 11 and securing a pulley 12 in place thereon. To the forward end or wall 18 of the carrier 2 is attached a screw shaft 14 by reducing one end of the shaft slightly to engage a bearing in the wall and further reducing and screw threading the extreme end of the shaft to receive a nut 15 to engage the shoulder 16 formed by said reduced end and hold the shaft in its bearing in the wall in a manner to permit the same to turn freely therein. The shaft l i is screwthrcaded throughout its length and extends outward through the screwthreaded opening in the outer end 1'? of the frame 1. The outer end 18 of the shaft 1 is squared to receive a wrench for turning the shaft and is also provided with a transverse opening to receive a bar 19 slidable therein for turning the shaft.
As shown in Fig. 2, the tool is applied to the work by engaging one of the notches in the head 6 with the shank of the key to be extracted and with the head engaging the inner side of the head of the key, and the inner end 20 of the frame 1 engaging the end of the hub of the pulley. After being placed in this position the shaft 14 is turned to draw the carrier 2 toward the outer end 17 of the frame 1 thus bringing the head 6 into engagement with. the head of the key and causing the key to be drawn from its 7 seat.
The head or disk 6 may, if desired, be provided with holes 21 in its periphery between the notches 9 and within these holes may be secured one or more short pins 22 which may be employed as shown in Fig. 3, to extract the key having no head, by drilling a hole in the key to receive the pin.
The device may be quickly and easily applied to any key in any position and the screw shaft affords ample power for extracting any key of a size ordinarily used in securing the common sizes of pulleys to shafting.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising a supporting frame, a carrier movable upon said frame, a rotatable head on said carrier having a series of notches of varying sizes adapted to engage keys, and means for moving the carrier longitudinally of the frame.
2. A device of the character described comprising an open supporting frame having sides and ends, an open carrier frame within the supporting frame slidable longitudinally thereof, a rotatable head having a series of notches of various sizes adapted to engage keys and pivotally attached to one end of the carrier, and a screw shaft attached at one end to the other end of the carrier and extending through the screwthreaded opening in the end of the supporting frame.
23 A device of the character described comprising a supporting frame having sides provided with longitudinal slots and a screw threaded opening in one end, an open carrier having end walls and adapted to slide within the supporting frame, means on the carrier engaging the slots in the sides of the frame, a rotatable head having a series of notches of varying sizes adapted to engage 15 keys and pivotally secured within thescarrier to one of the end walls thereof, and a screw shaft engaging the screwthreaded opening in the frame and attached at its inner end to the other end wall of the carrier. 20 In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
