THOMAS E. KINNEY, OF WAVERLY, OHIO.
AUTOMATIC WARNING-WHISTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 24, 1909.
Patented Nov. 29, 1910. Serial No. 534,763.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at I/Vaverly, in the county of Pike and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Warning- Whistles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tanks for holding easily combustible liquids, such as gasolene, denatured alcohol or the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a tank equipped with an alarm device which will be actuated when a liquid is being drawn out of the same.
My invention consists generally of a receptacle provided with an inlet andan outlet, and an alarm device connected to the receptacle.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, a portion thereof being broken away.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings, 1 designates a tank which is shown as being cylindrical and having its ends closed as at 2 and 3.
The tank 1 is divided into a plurality of separate compartments 4, 5 and 6, by means of partitions 7. At the bottom of the tank 1, the compartments 4, 5 and 6 are provided with discharge pipes 8, 9 and 10 respectively. The discharge pipes 8, 9 and 10 are disposed in parallel relation to each other and extend beyond the closed end 2 of the tank 1. The discharge pipes 8, 9 and 10 are provided respectively with spigots 11, 12 and 18. The compartments 4, 5 and 6 are each provided upon their upper side with a circular opening 14, adapted for the reception of a plug 15 which is screw threaded upon its periphery. The plugs 15 closing the openings 14 which communicate with the compartments 5 and 6 are each provided centrally thereof with an aperture 16, which allows air to enter the compartment from which a liquid is being drawn. The plug 15 arranged within the opening 14 which communicates with the compartment 4 is provided centrally thereof with a recess 17 adapted for the reception of an externally screw threaded body portion 18 of a whistle of any well known form. To the body portion 18 is attached a tubular casing 19 which passes through an opening in the plug 14. The casing 19 is adapted to contain the alarm mechanism of the whistle. It is to be understood that the whistle comprising the body portion 18 and the casing 19 is capable of producing a noise or alarm when air is drawn through the same into the compartment 4.
In the use of my device the compartments 4, 5 and 6 may be filled with difierent liquids. For example, the compartment 4 may be filled with an easily combustible liquid such as gasolene, while the compartments 5 and 6 may be filled with kerosene oil and refined oil respectively. If the operator desires to draw kerosene oil from the tank 5 and by mistake should turn on the spigot compartment 4, the whistle connected to the.
tank 4 will be actuated to inform the operator of his mistake. It is thus seen that my device will prevent confusion in the use of a tank divided into a plurality of compartments, each of which contains a different liquid. When the operator is drawing gasolene from the tank 4, the whistle will be actuated as before stated and will serve as a warning of danger to the operator.
Having fully described my invention, I claim 1. The combination with a tank, having both ends thereof closed, of a discharge pipe for said tank, said tank being provided with an opening formed through its wall whereby material may be supplied within said tank, a. closure plug removably mounted within said opening and having an opening formed therethrough, said last named opening communicating with the interior of the tank, and a whistle disposed within the last named opening and adapted to be actuated by the passage of air through the same into said tank.
2. The combination with a tank having its ends closed, of a discharge pipe therefor, said tank having its periphery provided with a screw threaded opening formed therethrough to serve as means whereby material tuated by air passing therethrough into said may be supplied within the tank, a screw tank. 0 threaded closure plug removebly mounted I In testimony whereof I aifix my signature within said screw threaded opening and havin presence of two witnesses.
ing an opening formed therethroug-h in com- THOMAS E. KINNEY. munication with the interior of said tank, Witnesses:
and a whistle removably mounted Within the GRANVILLE H. ELLIOTT,
last named opening and adapted to be 210- SUE L. HmBENs.
