Be it known that I, GUS'TAF E. VVALLTN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Kansas Cit-y, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inSpace-Band v:Buffers for Linotype-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact def scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.'
M y invention relates to space-band buffers for linotype machines, and has for its object to provide a device 'of that class which 1s simple and economical in construction and comprises the improved details of structur hereinafter described.
To give a better understanding of my invention, I will explain that the space-bands referred to are used as quads between the matrices, and each space-band has a notchedv bottom adapted to receive a horizontally eX- tending, guiding member that is attached to and forms a part of the linotype machine.. Such guiding members or buifers, have been faulty in operation, inasmuch as they occasionally permit matrices to lean over against the starwheel when the line is filled up. These faults are obviated by the device herein described and pointed out in the appended claims; and a preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring more in detail to the parts :iIn order that the invention shall be more clearly apprehended, I have shown in Fig. I certain well known parts of a linotype machine, to Wit: the elevator guides, 1 and 2; a screw 3 which enters a hole in the right-hand elevator guide 2; the rear wall t of the assembler; the assembler slide, 5; the assembler elevator 6; the star-wheelS, and the chute cover 20.
l `The functions yof all of the parts mentioned are well known 'to I all who are familiar with the art of linoeyping.
Referring now more particularly to my improvements, 9 designates several of the space-bands referred' to, shown assembled in a line of matrices 10, which are supported within the assembler 4:. rlhe matrices and space-bands are held in contact by a lug 12 on the slide 5, which is tensioned'by a spring, not shown.
14; designates my improved buffer, which consists of a narrow linger disposed horizontally in vertical alinement with the centers of .the space-bands 9, the finger being provided in its upper vedge with a recess having an inclined surface 14T. When the space bands are dropped from the chute onto I this'buffer their lower ends impinge upon the incline 14th, and, being smooth, their lower ends will slip down this incline, by gravity, while their upper parts are held out by the end 20 of the chute cover 20. There fore the upper end of each spaceband will lean to the left, or away from the star wheel, and hold the matrices out of contact therewith. As' the space bands are fed into the assembler and moved horizontally therein, it will be understood that they will drag on the buffer 14 to maintain the leaning posi tion. At one end this buffer is pivoted upon a screw stud 15, held by a bracket 16 having a slotted foot 16, which is secured by the screw 3 to the right-hand elevator guide, 2, the pivotal mounting being provided in or der that its free end may be lifted by the assembler elevator when the latter contacts therewith upon its up stroke. 17 designates an adjustable stop, which is held in a lug 19 on bracket 1G by a set screw 18, and is adapted for supporting the buffer 14, the stop 17 being notched, as shown, to loosely receive the lower edge of the buffer.
The height of the buli'er is so adjusted that each space-band 9 entering the assem bler at the right will drop until its notched lower end strikes the lower part of the incline 14".
The straight surface of the top .of the buffer should be parallel to the guides of the assembler Lt, which guides in the machine illustrated are horizontal. The adjustable stop 1&7 provides a means for adjustelisrn of the buffer. In combination, a bracket provided with a vertically adjustable buffer support and a pivot stud; a buffer pivotally mounted on said stud and supported by said support consisting 0f a linger provided with an initial upwardly inclincd surface and a rectilinear surface communicating With the upwardly inclined surface.
5. The combination with a linotype machine having elevator guides, of a bracket adjustably mounted 0n one of said. `guides, a space band buffer having one end pivotally mounted on the free`\end of said bracket and having an incline on its upper edge, a lug on said bracket and a stop adjustably 1n0unted in said lug, said stop being slotted at its upper' end to receive said bulfer, substantially as set forth.
