To all whom it mo concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK J. VAN Corr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unadilla, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors for Silos, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to doors for silos, ice houses and food preserving receptacles having a door formed of one or more sections, if necessary, and closing the door opening by being shut from the inner side of the door way, outwardly.
I have shown the invention as applied. to the opening in the side of a silo, but this device may be made to apply to any receptacle or housing having a door closing the opening from the inner side, outwardly.
My invention relates more particularly to the form and construction of sectional doors for silos and the means for holding the section in place in the door frame and means for loosening and removing the door or each section of the door, from top to bottom when it is desired to remove the same, which means combined may form also a series of steps on the outside of the silo or other structure whereby a person can easily mount from the bottom to the top for the purpose of inspection or for opening said door.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a front view of a silo door showing my invention applied, the door being shown in an unlocked position; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the door in a locked position; Fig. 3, is a sectional plan view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4c, is a similar view taken on the line 4l4 of Fig. 2, Fig. 5, is a plan view of a part of my invention.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In my drawing Fig. 1, shows the general form for the opening of the silo, opening from the top to the bottom as shown in the section of door A, the structure being bound together by rods in the ordinary way extending around the silo. The ends of which rods are shown at B and B entering into and having connection with the lugs C and C, fastened on the jamb of the door frame as shown in Fig. 1. The said lugs are constructed having outwardly facing braced shoulders, 1, 2, 8 and 4, and 1, 2, 3 and 4, and having brace extensions 5 and 6 and 5 and '6. Through the brace extends the opening for the insertion of the rods as in Fig. On one end of the lug is an additional outside shoulder 7 and 7. Between the two shoulders 4 and 7 and 4 and 7 is an opening or a cavity and in which plays the nut 8. Between the two lugs C and 0, extends a rod B having on it the nuts 8 and 8. The rods thus extending across the opening form a protecting brace for the opening. Between these j am'bs of the opening is inserted the door A. It will be noticed that for a more complete union between the door and the interior edge of the doorway, I have the side edges of the door sections and the vertical door opening fashioned in ogee formation, as shown in E and E".
On the outer surface of the door I have firmly mounted and secured my fastening devices F and F for which devices I make special claim in this application. These are fashioned as follows: Each consists of a plate, and projecting from the center of the outer surface is the hemi-sphe-rical portion Gr and G extending either way from this hemi-spherical portion and the journals H-H and I-III. Through the central hemispherical port-ion are the diagonal slots I and I. The journals H-I-I and I-IH, mentioned above form guides for the horizontal rods K and K, which arms K and K have integral arms L and L, and which arms K and K extend through the diagonal slot I and I. Then placed in position upon the surface of the door the two arms L and L extend toward each other as in Figs. 1 and 2. On these arms are placed the tube M as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4c forming a bail connecting the two arms L and L allowing free play of the arms in the interior of the tube. Each rod K and K resting in the journals arm has an outer projecting end N and N. which is bent, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4:.
In the operation of my device in order to place and firmly secure in its place a door, I push upward the arms and the arms moving upward are drawn together by the diagonal slots I and I and thus draw within the edges of the door the point of the arm N and N. I then insert the door in the door way, and then draw it into place until its beveled edges are firmly secured against the beveled edge of the sides of the door opening as shown in Fig. l. I then pull down upon the bail which causes the arms K and K guided by the diagonal slots I and I, to extend laterally, driving the arms of the bail farther apart, and thus thereby forcing the points N and N over the outer surfaces of the door way with a twisting motion, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, thereby the more securely drawing the door against the beveled edges and holding it firmly in place.
lVhen applied to the sectional doors of a silo my method of operation is as follows: I first insert a door section as A and draw it firmly into place and secure it as above stated. Then I place above it and draw into place another door section and draw it into place and so on up to the top. All the arms assume the downward clamped position as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, in each door section. When all are in place I thereby have a series of steps or rungs whereby to mount on the outside of this series of doors from the bottom to the top of the silo.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and for which I desire Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In a silo, a door therefor having its edges beveled to engage the inside of the silo and limit the outward movement of the door, a pair of plates secured to the door and each having a groove or recess formed in the side adjacent the door, shafts mounted in said grooves and slidable therein, L- rods secured to the shafts and projecting outwardly through cam slots formed in the plates, and a sleeve engaged on and connecting the ends of the rods, upon the depres sion of said sleeve the rods and thus the shafts being forced outward by the cam slots, and the shafts each having an enlarged cam-shaped outer end adapted to contact with the outside of the silo, the further depression of the sleeve rocking the shafts to cause the cam portions to press against the silo and draw the door outward into tight engagement with the inside of the silo and lock it in said position.
2. In a silo, the combination with the staves forming the body thereof, said staves being spaced apart at one side to provide a door way, the jainb or side edges of said door-way having an ogee formation for cooperation with a corresponding ogee formation on the door, of a plate secured exteriorly of the silo at each side of the door-way, said plate comprising a base portion, a transversely disposed lug formed at each end thereof having a pair of openings formed therein, the openings in the lugs being in alined pairs, a flanged extension formed on the plate in alinement with one pair of the openings and forming a nut receiving socket, a band passed around the staves and having its ends passed through one pair of openings of the plate and having a nut engaged on its projecting end to secure itin position, and a rod passing across the door way and passing through the other pair of openings, and nuts in the sockets for engaging the ends of the rod to secure it in position.
3. In combinationwith a silo having a door opening formed therein, a door for the opening having means engaging the interior of the silo, casings secured to the exterior of the door and having cam faces, rock shafts journaled in said casings, and means projecting from the shafts and adapted to rock the same, said means being engaged and pressed outward by the cam faces of the casings, carrying with them the shafts and forcing the latter into engagement with the silo, the ends of the shafts being formed with cam portions for clampingly engaging the silo to lock the door in position.

In combination with a silo having a door opening formed therein, a door for the opening having means engaging the interior of the silo, casings secured to the exterior or outer side of the door, said casings having slots formed therein having cam faces, rock shafts journaled in the casings, means projecting through the slots for roclring the shafts, the rocking of said shafts bringing said means into engagement with the cam faces of the slots which force said means and the shafts outward, the shafts being formed with cam ends adapted when forced outward to clampingly engage the silo to lock the door in position, and abutment portions on the casings limiting the movement of the operating means to cause them to stand out from the door to provide steps on the face thereof.
5. In a silo, the combination with the doorway, of a door therefor having means engaging the interior of the silo for securing it in position, members mounted in pairs on the face of the door, L-shaped operating rods carried thereby, a sleeve engaged on the ends of the said rods, and cam plates carried by the door and engaging the other leg of said rods and adapted when the said members are rocked to force the rods and thus the members outward, the members engaging the exterior of the silo to secure the door in position with respect thereto.
6. In a silo, the combination with the doorway, of a door therefor having means engaging the interior of the silo for securing it in the doorway, shafts mounted in pairs on the face of the door, L-shaped operating rods carried thereby for rocking the shafts, a sleeve engaged 011 the ends of said rods and connecting the same, and plates carried by the door and having cam faces adapted to engage the rods when the shafts are rocked to force the rods and shafts outward, the shafts engaging the exterior of the silo to secure the door in position with respect thereto, and abutments carried by the plates for limiting the move ment of the rods to cause the sleeve bearing ends thereof to project from the door to provide a step.
