Leim-s Pergame. 97,687, dared December 7, 1869.
' IMPROYEMENT IN FEED-CUTTER.
i The Schedule're'ferred `to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Beit known that I, HANS PETERSON, of Red Wing,
Y in the county of Goodliue, and State of Minnesota,
have inventeda new and valuableImprovement in Feed-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following, is a full, clear, and exact description of thev construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of 'this specification, and tothe letters and gures of reference marked thereon. i Figure 1, of the drawings, is a front view of my invention.
i `Figure 2 is aside View, showing gearing.
Figure 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section of my invention. i
Figure 4 is a detached view`,of knife. x Figures 5 and (i are transverse vertical sections,
`showingthe movement of the sliding-frame;
My. invention hasfrelationlto means for cutting hay, straw, and-other long feed for animals; and
1t consists in a novel arrangement of devices, in-
tended' to serve as an eicient apparatus for the pur-V pose'named.; l A, ofthe drawings, represents a long box, open at each end, and arranged upon' a lframe inA the usual i manner, and.
B and O represent corrugated cylinders, extending from side to side of said box,wit'h bearings in .the
,sidesthereof "These cylinderslare designed to draw the feed forward in the box, and for that 'purpose are made to rotate, by means .of 'the gearing, hereinafter described;
F and D are pinions,respectivelyattached' to the endsof-thecylinders,outside the box, as shown, and
end, and to the ptman H at the other.
i It'is also united, at its middle, to the arm L, -by a `pivot bolt, as shown.
M represents a qnadrangular frame, united to the leverK by the pivoted arm L, the object of which is to press the feed down closely together, wh ile the pro# cess 0f cutting is being carried on, as `described liefeafter. It is moved up and down by means of the crank and its connections, in slots formed for that purpose in the inner side of the box, respectively'.
R is a large wheel,`rmly attached to the front end of shaft YE, and I affix toit 4a crankpin, a. moving-machinery is operated by rotating this wheel.
g T represents my cutting-knife attached and made removable, byscrews, to one of the arms of the wheel To 'operate my device, I4 place thel feed lengthwise in the box, and turn'the wheel. The vgearing causes the cylinders to draw the feed forward between them, while, bymeans of the crank, pitmaii, andlever, the frame M pushes the some down firmly at every revolution of the knife, and precisely 'at the Amoment of cutting. ,',lhis arrangement' causes vthe, feed to be drawn forward and pressed into the .proper volume for cutting, by means that. operate automatically.
What-I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j y 1. The frame M, arm L, level-K, pitman H, crankshaft E, and Wheel R, when constructed and arranged to operate as specified.. Y
2. 'In combination with frame M, and its operating connections, the cylinders F and D, and removableknife T, when constructed and arranged as and for the purpose specified. V
In testimony that I, claim the above, I have here-A unto subscribed my name, in the presence of two witnesses. l
