To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH FRANCES DYKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hawkinsville, in. the county of Pulaski and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Motors for Operating Ghurns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to mechanism adapted to oscillate a cream receptacle for the purpose of churning and also to serve as a mechanical motor for general purposes.
The said invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side view in elevation of a machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 represents a detail side elevation of the suspended spring casing, one side thereof being removed to exhibit the inclosed spring; Fig. 3 represents a detail plan view of the platform or base for the receptacle and proximate parts; Fig. 4 represents a sectional view of the machine taken in a vertical plane parallel to that of Fig. 1, the cream receptacle being omitted. Two diversely inclined positions of oscillation of the platform and spring casing and intervening swinging parts are shown in dotted lines. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. 4, the pivot studs or gudgeons being left unsectioned; and Fig. 6 represents a detail view of the anchor-form escapement-pawl and the fixed arm engaging the upper end of its long stem.
The supporting table 1 has widely diverging legs, for convenience of access to the diskform spring-casing 4, which is suspended by a frame consisting mainly of two parallel bars 3, connected by transverse rods 22 and passing down through an opening 2 in the table top from a rock-shaft 8 journaled in a supplemental stand 6, which is supported by said table. A platform 7 is mounted on said shaft, these parts 3, 7 and 8 rocking Specification of Letters Patent.

together, but having no individual motion. The casing 4 accompanies their oscillation, but, to cause it, also turns on its arbor or shaft 25 (see Fig. 2) with a step by step movement from left to right, caused by the clock-spring 17, within said casing, which is attached at its ends to said casing at 20 and said arbor 25 respectively, and controlled by the engagement of an anchor-form escapement pawl 23 with a circular series of spur teeth 21 on the periphery of said casing. This spring may be wound by a thumb piece or winding head 5 on one protruding end of said arbor, which is also provided with a ratchet wheel 18 engaged by a retaining pawl 19 (Fig. 1). The pawl 23 consists of a preferably integral long upwardly extending arm or stem and a head having pallets a b at its ends extending downward to be acted on by said teeth 21 and engage them. At the junction of the lower end of said stem with the middle of said head this pawl is provided with lateral pivot studs 0, whereby it is journaled in bars 3, the pawl, excepting said pallets and the proximate terminal parts of the head, being located between them. The long stem of this anchor escapement-pawl is attached to a stud or bent end of a horizontal arm (Fig. 6), 24 mounted on stand 6 and engaging the edge of an opening in plate 26 thereof by means of a notch 27 in said arm which notch is long enough to permit some play of the pawl 23 on its pivot 0 for preventing strain and facilitating detachment of said arm at will. The pivotal connection of parts 23 and 24 is vertically below shaft 8 making the stem or pawl 23 shorter than bars 3.
Any convenient object requiring oscillation may of course be mounted on platform 7, but I have shown it as carrying a cream receptacle 13, inasmuch as the primary purpose of the mechanism herein described is to oscillate and churn the contents thereof, producing butter. This receptacle has a mouth 14 on its top and a hole 15 in its side for drawing oif the butter-milk after churning. It is also held in position by straps 10, which have button-holes 12 (Fig. 4) for engaging studs 16 on top of said receptacle, said straps being passed through keepers 11 on the in place.

As the attachment of the upper end of the stem of pawl 23 to fixed arm 24 prevents said pawl from moving independently on its own pivot 0, except slightly (to free the tooth) by reason of the points of attachment of the upper ends of said pawl and said bars 3, it follows that the bars 3 must rock with said pawl to permit the said requisite movement of pallet b. The platform 7, as already explained participates in such motion, carrying with it the cream receptacle 13 or whatever else it may support to the left, the bars 3 swinging to the right. Then the pallet Z) is thus made to rise sufiiciently to free such tooth, as shown in dotted lines in the right of Fig. 4, the spring casing 4 turns for the peripheral interval between two teeth, bringing the next tooth to the left of pallet a into contact therewith, moving it upwardly and outwardly. The stem of the pawl 28 being attached at its upper end to an arm 24 as above stated the pawl has no movement independent of said bars 3, except a ver 1 slight movement to allow said pallets to rise and free the teeth. Therefore in rising upwardly and outwardly the pallet a will turn the pawl 28 slightly on its pivot, its influence being to force the swinging parts to the left, that is in the reverse direction than the pallet 6, these two pallets being on different sides of vthe pivot 0. Thus when the teeth bear against pallet b the tendency will be to force the swinging parts to the right and rock the platform and whatsoever it may support to the left and when they bear against the pallet a the tendency will be to force the swinging parts to the left and rock the platform and whatsoever it may support to the right. 7 When the extreme end of the swing is reached, that is when one of the, pallets rises over a tooth the tooth next to the left of the other pallet will en gage the same, forcing it upward and outward and reversing the direction of movement, thus the reciprocating movement is "continuous until the spring runs down.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a rotary springcasing provided with peripheral teeth and a spring within said casing for turning the same, a pivoted suspending frame for said casing adapted to permit and accompany its pendulum-like oscillation, apawl pivoted in said frame, engaging said teeth and arranged and adapted to carry the said frame and casing with it in its oscillating movement and means for supporting a receptacle moving with said frame, pawl and casing substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In combination with a rotary springcasing provided with peripheral teeth and a spring within said casing for turning the same, a pivoted suspending frame for said casing adapted to permit and accompany its oscillation, a pawl pivoted in said frame, engaging said teeth and arranged and adapted to carry the said frame and easing with it in its oscillating movement.
3. In combination with a rotary springcasing provided with peripheral teeth and a spring within said casing for turning the same, a pivoted suspending frame, a shaft on which said frame is pivoted, said casing being mounted on the lower part of said frame, a pawl pivoted in position to en age said teeth and arranged and adapted to carry the said frame and easing with it in its oscillating movement.
- 4. In combination with a rotary springcasing provided with peripheral teeth and a spring within said casing for turning the same, a shaft, two suspending bars between the lower ends of which said casing is rotatably mounted, said bars being pivotally mounted on said shaft, a platform connected to the upper ends of said bars, and a pawl pivoted between said bars to engage said teeth and arranged and adapted to carry the said bars, casing and platform with it in its oscillating movement.
5. In combination with a rotary and oscillating spring-casing haying peripheral teeth, a spring inclosed therein to turn the same, a suspending frame therefor pivoted at its upper end, a platform rocking with said frame, an anchor eseapement-pawl provided with two pallets for engaging with said teeth and pivoted in said frame and an arm attached to the stem of said pawl below the pivotal point of said frame and a fixed part engaging the said arm so as to compel said frame and pawl to move together in oscillation substantially as set forth.
6. In combination with a rotary and oscillating spring casing, having peripheral teeth, a spring inclosed therein to turn the same, a suspending frame therefor pivoted at its upper end, an anchor escapement pawl pivoted in said frame to engage said teeth and provided with a stem, an arm attached at one end to the upper end of said stem and provided near its other end andon top with a long notch which end passes through a slot in some fixed object, the ends In testimony whereof, I have signed my of said notch being engaged by the upper name to this specification in the presence of edge of said slot, this construction compeltwo subscribing witnesses.
