TEMPORARY FENCE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J l VIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefierson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in T emporary Fences, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a gripping and supporting device, intended for use as a support for a temporary fence, but which may be used for other purposes, such as supporting a door or the like While being planed to fit within the casing thus forming a convenient and necessary member of a carpenters kit, and the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the invention, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating the device supporting a temporary fence, parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device illustrating the manner of connecting the corners of the fence. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view upon the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, and referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, the numeral 1 designates the improved gripping and supporting device. This device 1 comprises essentially a pair of vertical members or bars 2 having their lower portions provided with horizontally extending members 3 and the said extending members have their under faces adjacent their outer ends provided with depending feet 4. The horizontal members 3 are connected together through the medium of a suitable resilient strap 5, and it will be noted, by this arrangement, that the depending feet 4: together with the weight of the device at its center, forces the members 2 downwardly and toward each other so as to provide an effective grip for a member inserted between the vertical bars 2. The members 2, as well as the horizontal beams 3 are provided with suitable brace members 6 whereby each of the gripping sections are given an additional rigidity.

The bars forming the fence may be connected in any desired manner and it will be understood that the weight of the said fence being placed upon the resilient straps 5 will effectively force the members 2. toward each other so as to tightly grip and support the said fence, the manner of arranging the sections of the fence at an angle to each other being clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings. If desired the horizontal members 3 of the device may be provided with removable spurs 8, which are adapted to be inserted within the ground to serve as means for preventing the lateral or longitudinal movement of the device from any unforeseen cause. If desired one of the vertical members 2 may be provided with a plurality of dowels 9, arranged in spaced relation with each other, each of which being adapted to underlie and engage the longitudinally extending bars of the fence as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is The herein described temporary fence, including a plurality of longitudinally eXtending spaced bores, supporting members for these bores, said supporting members comprising a base member having a resilient depressed central portion, vertical members projecting adjacent the sides of said depressed portions, one of said vertical members being provided with a plurality of inwardly projecting dowels adapted to serve as a rest for the fence sections, angular supports for the vertical members, feet upon the extremities of the base member, and the said base members being provided with a plurality of downwardly extending retaining members adapted to enter the ground to prevent the movement of the fence.
