To all whom it may concern:

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed October 26, 1909.

Be itknown that I, CLARA I{A1-IN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Collar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is an improvement in collars, and has in view a stiff shirt or waist collar for either ladies or gentlemen, which can be washed with less work or at less eX- pense and take up less room, than the conventional linen collar, yet present a collar with a linen or washable fabric facing. To this end I construct the collar proper of a relatively stiff flexible collar band having an inner and an outer layer secured together at their lower edges and free at their upper edges for a substantial length of the collar to provide a pocket, and a washable facing having an inwardly-extending portion removably received within the pocket and an outwardlyextending port-ion covering the outer side of the band.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collar constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is an outer face view of the collar when extended; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a detachable linen or other washable fabric facing; and Fig. 4: is a cross-section of the collar on the line 44 of Fig. 1.

The collar essentially consists of a relatively stifi flexible collar band 5 and a washable fabric facing 6, the band being preferably made of celluloid and composed of outer and inner layers, as best shown in Fig. 4, these layers being stitched or otherwise secured together at the end portions of the band and at the bottom edge and provided with the customary front buttonholes 7 and the rear buttonhole 8. The two layers of the band are disconnected at the upper edge for the greater portion of their length to form a pocket 9. fabric and is folded longitudinally to form inner and outer portions, the inner portion being constructed to pass within the pocket, and the outer portion to cover the outer side of the band. With the two portions of the collar thus assembled, the tongue or inner portion of the facing will be bound between the layers of the band when the collar is placed about the neck, and the collar will present substantially the same appearance as the conventional linen collar. One collar band will sutlice for several collar facings, the facings being removed when soiled, and laundered the same as the usual collar, the band being sponged off when the collar facing is renewed, as is usual with the celluloid collar. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A collar comprising a relatively stifl flexible collar band of inner and outer regis tering layers of material respectively forming the inner and outer faces of the band and secured together at their lower edges and free at their upper edges for a substantial length of the collar to provide a pocket, and a washable facing having an inwardlyextending portion removably received within the pocket and an outwardly-extending portion covering the outer side of the band.

2. A collar comprising a relatively stiff flexible band of inner and outer registering layers of material secured together at their lower edges for a substantial distance adja-' cent to the ends, and disconnected at their upper edges for a substantial length of the collar, the band having front and rear buttonholes, and a collar facing covering the outer side of the band, having a portion removably engaging over and seating on the upper edge of the outer layer of the band, with the lower edge of said portion terminating above the rear buttonhole of the band.
