FABRIC-MARKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Miss A. SHUFELT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oswego, in the county of Oswe 0, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Marking Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a machine for marking shirts or other garments as a guide to the cutter, and particularly to a machine for marking the neck opening of knit shirts in which large quantities are produced on knitters of any desirable description, and afterward finished by hand.
It has heretofore been proposed to provide an apparatus of this kind which includes a horizontal table thereon for the garment to be marked, a slide or standard fitted to the frame and adapted to be elevated or depressed therein; a plate or turret head journaled on the up er end of the standard carrying a suita le number of forms or dies for different sizes of garments, means to rotate the plate at will to bring the proper die in position to engage with and mark the garment, when the slide is depressed, means to lock the plate in position when the proper die is in low position, and suitable mechanism released or dropped by the footto depress the standard to effect the desired operation of marking the garment.
In one embodiment of machines of this character, a carbon ribbon on suitable rollers has been used to im ress the garment with a substantially in elible mark. In anotherform theinking rollers have been dispensed with,-' and the forms or dies are provided with a chamber toreceive an electric heating cartridge, which heats u the die to such an extent that the die w1ll on being depressed upon thefabric, effect a permanentscoring.
I have found in practice, that operators, by reason of the great heat of the dies, are constantly in manipulation of the work being burned by contact of their hands with such dies, and one object of my invention is to do away with this dan er, by providm guards unconnected with t e die, but s ace therefrom. I have also found it deslrable not only in these electrical markers, but in those of the other type, to provide a device for mark n on the opposite side of the fabric, the place where the shirt front openin is to be made. I have, therefore, provided an inking disk or other device operable upon the depression of the die and moving up through the table to affix this indicating mark. Another object of my invention is, therefore, to provide mechanism for accomplishing this result.
The invention, therefore, consists in the various matters hereinafter described and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a marking apparatus embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front view partly in section, of the upper part of the apparatus; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the guards and inking apparatus.
In these drawings, 1 indicates the upright frame carrying the table or platen 2 for the garment, arranged at a suitable height for the operator.
3 is the rotatable'plate or turret head, carrying the desirable number of forms or dies which may be of different sizes. Each die 4 consists of a metallic base plate with a sharpened margin 5, and each die has a chamber to receive the electrical heating cartridge (3. The turret plate or head 3 is rotatable and is locked in desired position by any suitable mechanism, not herein shown. The turret plate or head 3 is depressed to cause a die to engage the fabric by means of the treadle 7, connected to the pulley 8, which in its rotation causes the vertical movement of the turret head.
The apparatus above described is substantially like that heretofore known and used in the art, and need not be more specifically referred to.
The first feature of novelty of the apparatus which is of my invention, consists in attaching in an suitable manner to a stationary part of tie frame, the guards 9, one on each side of the die 4, and spaced therefrom, so that said guards will protect the hands of the operator from contact with the hot die. As a further and s ecial improvement in apparatus of this kind I have provided 0. mar ing-device for indicating on the shirt the place where the opening in the front is to commence. This comprises a marking disk 10, sleeved on a shaft 11, and ad'ustable on said shaft throu h the sprin clip 12 and notches 13 on sa'li shaft. Sai shaft 11 has at one end a gear 14, meshing with a stationary segment gear 15, whereby in the vertical swinging movement of the disk marker 10, the latter is rotated.
The shaft 11, carrying the disk marker is supported in a frame 16, carried on the end of an arm 17, pivoted at 18 to lugs or an car" 19 on the under side of the garment table. At its inner end thearm 17 is pivotally attached to the vertical. rod 20, the lower portion of which extends through an opening in a lug 22 that projects from the turretcarrying slide. At the lower end of. the rod are one or more. nuts against which the lower end of the spring bears. This vertical rod is in connection with the treadle 7 and when the treadle is depressed, the rod 20- is drawn down against the pressure-of sprin 21,. acting as a cushion, thus raisin the dis marker 10 through. the slot 23 int e table, against the under side ofthe garment, asthe die is de ressed. An inking-pad 24-is-a-ttached to a racket 25 on-the under side of the table, the dislemarkerin its lowered position bearingtliereon, so as to receive a su ly of ink to make the proper mark on the fiiiiric.

1. In a fabric: marking machine, the combination. of a table forthe fabricprovided with anopening,. and. forminga platen,..a movable marking die arranged 'toengageone face of the fabric and-press the same against the platen,- and-a second markingdevice arranged to pass through the opening in the table and engage the opposite face of the fabric, and an operatin means common to both said dies for simultaneously operating them in op osite directions.
2. In a abric marking machine, the combination of a table for the fabric provided with an opening and forming a platen, a movable marking die arranged to engage one face of the fabric and press the same a ainst the platen, and a second marking device movable upward through the o )cning to engage the opposite face of the abric, a pivoted frame supporting the second die and means'for simultaneously operating both of said dies in opposite directions.
3. In a fabric marking machine, a markingi'die, a second marking device independent of said marking die, a common treadle for'operating them, independent connections between the treadle and marking die, and the second marking device, for respectively operating them, said second marking device comprising a revoluble disk, a gear member connected to the die, a stationary rack with which said stationary gear engages, and an ink: distributing member engaging the periphery of said die.
