Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 22, 1910.
Application filed August 31, 1909. Serial No. 515,476.
To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known that I, Gnone E. SCHMID'MER, a subject of the King of Bavaria, residing at Nuremberg, Germany, have invented a Culinary Scraper and Scourer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a utensil for scouring and cleansing purposes the said utensil being so arranged and constructed as to effectively cleanse articles such as dishes, metal-ware and the like, regardless of their shape or contour.
In a device of this character, as heretofore constructed, flat metal strips have been utilized for the purpose, but owing to the fact that they become entangled and form a tangled, unstable mass, they are, therefore, unsuitable for eflicient cleaning purposes and the flat strips having projections or elevations thereon become worn and do not operate to properly cleanse the articles.
In my present invention I have overcome such defects and inconveniences by my novel process of forming the metal strips and securing the same together in a manner which at all times maintains edges and corners projecting from all sides, whereby the same operates in the most eflicacious manner possible for scouring purposes.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying s one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various elements of which my invention consists can and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise ganization of these elements as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a scouring utensil embodying my invention, the same being shown partially completed. Fig. 2 represents a section through the same. Fig. 3 represents be variously arranged arrangement and or-- ment thereof which a section showing another embodiment thereof.
Similar numerals of reference indicate 1 i corresponding parts in the figures.
\ Referring to the drawings:-1 designates a strip of metal wire, preferably flat and formed into a substantial spiral by means of wrapping the same about a mandrel or the like of angular or round shape, according to the configuration which it is desired to produce in the completed spiral, after which eration the mandrel is removed, leaving metal wire bent as desired to form a spiral, each turn of which is shaped according to the form of the mandrel. Thus'in Fig. 2 the turns of the spiral are illustrated as formed about a rectangular mandrel While in Fig. 3 a modication is shown in which the coil has been formed upon a round mandrel. The
spiral metal wire is then ready to receive a cord, string or the like 2 which is passed through the center of the spiral and this cord is preferably of such a length as to provide an end 3, which may be doubled back upon itself and intertwisted with the spiral wire 1 and with a portion of the cord 2. The device so formed provides edges and corners on the metal strip projecting in all directions to secure the full scouring effect and in use may be formed in a ball or the like, which may be readily worked to and into corners and crevices of the articles in order to thoroughly cleanse the same. After a cleansing operation the device may be straightened out again in order to permit a thorough drying and cleaning of the same, ready for future use.v
It will now be apparent that I have de vised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the above description, and while I have in the present instance shown ariddescribed a preferred embodihas been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, i it is to be understood that the same is susl ceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of said cord having an end projecting exterior 1 its advantages. of said strip and doubled back and inter- Having thus described my invention, what twisted with said metal strip and with the I claim as new and desire to secure by Letaxis portion of said cord. 5 ters Patent, is:
As anew article of manufacture, a flexible GEORG SCHMIDMEB' scraper consisting of a spirally wound metal Witnesses: strip, a cord passing through said strip and OSCAR Boon,
forming substantially the axis of said strip, THEODOR BEEKH.
