HEEL FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
To all when it may concern:
Be-it known that I, HENRY TV. Coon, of No. 304 Walnut Place, Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Heels for Boots and Shoes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in heels for boots and shoes, and particularly to the class known as rubber heels, asa new article of manufacture. A
It. has been heretofore purposed to construct what is known as rubber heelsin various forms and devices, but for the most part they seem to be impracticable for the real purposes in hand.
My object, therefore, is to produce a rubber heel, or the layer of the heel particularly which comes in contact with the ground as a new article of manufacture and one which may be readily placed upon the boot or shoe with the least expense and which shall be durable and of great utility.
My further object is to produce a rubber heel which shall have a cushion effect and ease the foot of the wearer when in use, and to that end my invention consists in the several new and novel features of construction and operation which are hereinafter described and fully set forth-in the claim hereunto annexed Itis constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shown is a vertical cross section through the heel. The rubber portion e'-, also extends below the lower face of the leather portion -b and is' likewise shown in Fig. 1, so that .when the heel is completed we shall have a heel made up of layers of leather, the central portion of the layers adjacent to the body of the shoe having cork inserts, and the outer layer having a rubber insert extending slightly below the lower surface of the exposed layer of the heel. The particular object of this form of construction is to al low the rubber to recede slightly when weight is placed upon it, thereby breaking the weight of the step, the rubber as it recedes compressing the cork insert -0.

produced a heel which, by virtue of the fact that the rubber is allowed to recede, breaks the weight of the step, but also reduces the wear upon the rubber to a minimum and also reduces the weight of the heel. It will also be observed that when the lower layer is finally worn away so as to become unsightly, or when, for any other reason, the heel needs to be reheeled, a new outer layer, such as shown and contemplated in Fig. 2, may be readily tacked thereon after removing the old layer.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
A heel comprising a layer havinga central recess, and cork or similar material inserted therein, and an outer layer having a central recess and a second recess in the upper inner edge of the outer layer. and a rubber.
