Description

I Vmy improvement, and
HI gmt@ DANIEL: D UeANoE ,SPEINGVILLE PENNSYLVANIA.
i .Letters `Patent No. 97,619, dated December 7, 1869.
" IMPnoyE-MENTJN Bens'rmins.
QThe-chedulereferxed'to yin` these Letters Patent and making pari: of theisaz'ne.
` l I, DANIEL 151.11lllirefert,V OPSpringVlle, countyl lof Chester, State of Pennsylvania, .have invented an ImDIOi-ement in Bedsteads, of Awhich the following is a specication. I t g LNdture cmd 4(Ny'ect of the Invention.. My invention consists in the intervention, between `the ends of the rails 'and posts of a bedstead, of a packing of rubber, or equivalent compressible material, for the purpose. of obtaining perfectly tight' joints,
which will preventthe admission of insects iiito the I `recesses in the-.posts,the saidv packing also preventing the` wearing awayotthe ends ,of 'the' rails, and the consequent creaking ofthe bedstead-joints, all as fully described hereafter; y l
` Description of the Accompanying Drawing. Figure 1 is a View of one sfide of a beds'tead, with y Figures 23, .4, 5, `and 6, detached views of the same drawn to anxenlargeflscale,
`f A represent tivo of the `posts of a bedstead, "and B, on'ecf the rails, the'latter, vfor the purpose of better illustrating my invention, being attached to the post A by vthefusual screw-fastening C, which passes through the post, and into4 one end of the rail, and
` "being attached to the post Aby a self-tightening catch, F,of ordinary construction, consisting of a T- piece, a, secured to the elud of the rail, and arranged -to pass through anoblong slot injan' inclinedA plate, l),
secured to the post, .the T-pieee,l when forced down ward, after passing throughlthe slot, having a tendency to draw the post `and rail tightly together. i
The recesses, which it is necessary to cut in the posts' of a bedstead for the reception ofthe ends of the rails,
aiord a harbor for .bed-bugs and other insects,`from which itis very-diicult'todislodge them, and no joints,
witnesses.-
` l n I as heretofore constructed, have. been suciently tight to prevent the admission oi' these insects.
I have found, however, that by the introduction of a Slat or` block ot' compressible rubber between the rail and post, a perfectly tight joint, which will effect- `uallyjdebar the passage of insects, can be obtained. y
lhisslat or block, marked H in the drawing,v is
fitted over the 'end of the rail, and against the shoulder .i 'of the same, sothat onthe introduction of the end of the raillinto theretess in the post, andthe tightening of the screw or other fastening, the rubber will be so irmly compressed between the post and rail as to iusnre the perfect jointvrequired.
` The intervening rubber has also another advantage,
- namely, that it -will i prevent the wearing away oi the end of the rail, and the consequent creaking, of thev bedstead atthe joints.
A washer orpacking, h, may also, it' desired, be in-I I' troduced beneath the head of the screw, as shown in iig. 6, whenthe latter fastening is employed. Although I prefer to use rubber as a packing-medium in the joints of bedsteads, it will be evident that leather or other compressible material may be substituted for the rubber, without departing from my invention. y
A Claim.
The combination of the rail and post of a bedstead, the fastening-device securing the two together, and a block of rubber c1' other compressible material, as set forth.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence oi' two subscribing `Witness`es:
JOHN WHITE,
Louis BosWIILL.
DANIEL E. DUGN.` y
