To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES MELVIN Jonas, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, telnporarily residin at 1443 Niagara street, in the city of Bualo, in the State of New York, United States, have invented a ccrtain new and useful Safety-Guard for Stamping-Machines; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same.
The invention relates to a very simple but effective safety guard attachment to stamping machines that is calculated to protect the hand-of an operator from injury while operating the machine.y A
The -invention consists essentially of'a guard rod caused to move back and forth horizontally between the dies, when separated, of a stamping machine, while in operation, and mechanism so arranged as to cause the safety rod to automatically move forward as the dies are coming together, and if the operators fingers are on the lower die (as is often the case) the safety rod will push his finger olf said die before the dies come together, and prevent the opcrators fingers from being caught between the dies. A tube is made to encircle the said Safety rod, to carry a flat brush that is attached thereto, and mechanism constructcd to turn the brush from paerpen` dicular to horizontal, and vice .ersa, so as to brush off the work operated on from the lower die (after stamping) when in a vertical position, and turnedY to a horizontal position on its return in time to brush off the next piece stamped from the lower die, when completed, as will be more fully shown hereinafter and illustrated in the accomf panying drawing in which,- l

The said frame 14, has within it a large gear wheel 16, which meshes into the cogs of the rack bar 10, and moves' it with the safety rod 5, back and forth horizontally between the dies 2, A3, when they are separated. 17, is a smaller gear wheel also on the same shaft 18, which' carries the large gear wheel 16; it is aboutI halt the size of the gear wheel 16, and may be integral with it or be separate, but keyed on the saine shaft as the said gear wheel 16.
19, is an upper and slanting rack bar made to mesh in the small gear wheel 17, and drive it, with the large gear 16, to operate the lower rack bar, and thence the safety rod and brush 7a. The angle of the said rack\ bar 19, is adjustable according to requirements, it passes through agroove 20, formed in an adjustable cap or projection 21, which is pivotally attached to the axle 18, of the gear wheels 16 and 17, in the frame 14. The' angle of the said groove 20,'in the projection 21, to adjust the proper slantof the upper rack bar 19, is accomplished by means of two curved slots 22, and 23 in the frame 14, and bolts 24, 25 are assed through the cap or projection 21, and through the slots 22, and 23, and secured by nuts at the rear of the frame 14; this means permits of adjusting the said slanting toothed rack bar 159 to Iany required angle.

The said link 29, has a connecting rod 31, made to pass through it and held at any part of its surface by a set screw 82. rlhe opposite end of the said connecting rod 31, is passed through another linkBS, (similar to the one marked 29), and is held thereto at any desired distance from the said link 29, by a set screw 34. rllhe npper end of the link 33 has a circular opening made therein and a connecting rod 35, passed through it and secured to the said link 33, by a set screw 86. The opposite end of the connecting rod 35, has a metal head piece 37,

Mechanism for turning the brush from, a
horizontal to a vertical posit/0n ater- 'mately/. The brush 7a, is secured in a horizontal slot 7, of the tube 6, which incloses the safety rod 5. A crank plate 46, is secured to the inner end of the tube 6, inclosing the guard' rod 5, and is movably connected to the end of a rocker arm 47, having a slot 48, in its upper end through vwhich the pin 49, of the crank plate 46, passes to make the connection between the two said parts. The rocker arm 47, is pivoted aboutthecenter, to the bracket 8, by the pivot pin 50, and its lower and smaller end is made to pass through a slot 51, formed in the outer end of a movable metal bar 52, fastened alongside of the lower rack bar 10, and the' said metal bar 52, moving horizontally with the said rack bar 10, operates the rocker arm 47, back and forth, and through the latter oscillates the tube 6, and causes the brush 7 a, (which is attached to the tube) to change from a vertical to a horizontal position. When the said brush 7 is in an upright position it sweeps oit the work stamped, from the face of the lower die, and on its return to the front it is turned flat as it passes between the dies on the rising of the upper die 2, as shown in Fig. 2.
Brush- The means of securing the brush 7, to t-hetube \ 6, is as follows, two metal strips 6a, inclining inward at the top are soldered to the tube, leaving a longitudinal channel 7, the length of the tube into which the head ot' the brush is inserted and may be pushed along to any part of the said tube `6 desired, to operate over the under die 3, of1 the stamping machine A. but for some special individual work, the

Having thus described my device and its advantages, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln combination with a die stamping machine, a brush inade lto operate back and forth in4 parallel lines between the male and eve,

In combination with a stamping una-l chine, mechanism attached thereto-and operated by it, consisting of a frame attached rigidly to the stamping machine, a horizontal rack bar made to slide back and forth in the said frame, a horizontal safety rod attached indirectly to the rackbar, a brush attached to a tube surrounding the safety rod, and' mechanism to drive the horizontal rack bar to push the said safety rod and brush between the dies when separated during their operation, to push the operators hand off the lower die before the upper die descends to it, and on the return movement to brush off the work stamped as the upper die ascends preparatory to another descent.

In combination with a stamping machine, a frame attached to the machine, carrying a large and small pinion, a horizontal' rack bar made to slide back and forth in a groove in said frame, a safety rod attached indirectly tothe said rack bar, to move forward and back between the dies, when apart, a 'slanting rack also made to slide diagonally in a groove in the said frame and made to engage with the smaller gear wheel, the said slanting rack bar indirectly connected to and bedriven by the main shaft of the stamping machine for the purpose specified.

In combination with a stamping machine, and safety rod to move back and forth between the dies during their operation, a series of`connect1ng rods made to pass through links to adyust the length of the connection between the slotted plate on the main shaft of the stamping machine and rod forward and back between the dies whom they are separated, a crank on the mnex'cnd of the `sa fety rod, a device to hold a brush on the safety rod, a rocker arm attached to the said crank a slot in same to receive the crank pin, a bracket to hold said parts, a horizontal bar attached to the side of the horizontal rack bar, and made to receive the small end y of the rocker arm to impart motion from the ,same by the said rack bar, and give a quar- "ter turn to the safety rod to turn the brush horizontal when passing outward between the idies, and perpendicular when returning, to sweep off the stamped work from the lower die as soon as the upper die ascends.
7. In combination with a stamping machine, a safety device made to operate between the male and female dies when they Vare apart, and mechanism to give the safety device one quarter turn during every forward and backward movement to push olf the operators hand from the lower die beforethe dies close together and sweep off the stamped work from the lowerdie on the return or backward movement of the brush.

In combination with a stamping machine, and mechanism to operate a safety rod and stamped work removing device between the male and female dies when apart, of slots in the frame inelosing the bevel gear, a cap to fit over the same, said cap having a groove in which the slanting rack bar slides, the bolts of the cap to enter the Slots so as the cap and its groove can be adjusted to any angle or slant required by the said slanting rack bar. In combination with a stamping machine, an attachment consisting of a safety rod and devices attached thereto, to drive it back and forth between the dies when apart, a frame carrying gears, an adjustable cap on the upper part of said frame, a groove in said cap, a slanling adjustable rack bar made to slide therein.l slots in the upper part of the frame to adjust the angle of the groove for the slaniing rack bar, a horizon-` tal recess in the frame for the lower and horizontal rack bar to slidein, an interior recess, a flat tension spring in the latter to impinge on the lower rack bar, a-cover guide plate, secured to the lower part of the frame to keep the horizontal bar and gear wheels in place.

In combination with a stamping machine, and mechanism to operate a safety rod and brush pickerbctween the male and female dies, a frame carrying gear wheels, a slanting rack bar made adjustable to parts attached to the slotted plate secured` tothe main shaft of the stamping machine to operate the rack bar.
