JAR OR RECEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAPHAEL H. VOLFF, citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jars or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and improved jar or receptacle and more particularly to a device for tightly securing the inner cover of the jar or receptacle, so that the jar will be rendered absolutely air-tight.
My device may be made of glass, china, metal or any other desirable material, but preferably of glass.
By my construction, the cover does not eX- tend beyond the perpendicular plane of the side of the receptacle, so that great economy of space in packing and shipping is attained.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my device. Fig. 2 is a modication of same.
My receptacle has straight sides o. A short distance below the mouth and on the inside of the receptacle is a shoulder or projection b. This projection may extend entirely around the sides of the receptacle or there may be several smaller projections.
The inner cover c, which is preferably made of glass, but can be made of any other material, rests upon the projections or projection b. The top of the receptacle is threaded on its outer side as shown at CZ, and a metal cover e with corresponding threads is screwed on to the receptacle, or it may be fastened by any other well known means.
In the construction shown in Fig. l, the inner cover c has attached to it, or formed integral therewith as may be desired, a spacer f which may be ofa little greater length than the space between the inner cover c and upper cover c. The upper cover e has an opening g in the center and a downwardly projecting threaded flange it. A hollow cap z', which is larger than the spacer f, screws into the threaded ange 71,.
The operation of the device is as follows r--After the contents of the receptacle have been placed in it, the cover c is placed on the rim or projection b, the cover e is then fastened on the outside. course, the inside of it, presses against the top of the spacer f, and the spacer f is pressed down with any required amount yof pressure that may be found desirable and the cover c then is forced tightly against the projection or projections o, thus obtaining a complete and absolutely tight closure.
In the modification shown in Fig. :2, the cover e has a threaded projecting cap Z, which is made integral with the cover c and the thread on the inside of the cap Z corresponds with a thread on the upper end of the spacer f. In this form of construction, the cover c is of course placed on the projection yor projections b and the cover e-is screwed on to the spacer f and the sides of the receptacle simultaneously.
' I do not wish to confine myself to the precise construction shown in the drawings but claim broadly means for forcing the inner cover tightly down `onto the projection or projections on the inside of the receptacle by screw pressure.
I claim l. A device of the kind described, comprising a receptacle having an interior projection situated below the top of the jar, a cover placed in the mouth and adapted to sit on the projection, an outer cover attached to the neck of the receptacle, said inner cover having a spacer formed on the cover, and a screw cap on the outer cover to coact with the spacer and force the inner cover tightly down on to the projection.
