To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcKsoN RoBmsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnace-Doors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to furnace doors, and. the objects of my invention are to provide a furnace with a door that will withstand the intense heat to which the same is subjected, and to provide novel means for cooling the door whereby it cannot warp or become distorted.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a concrete furnace door that can be easily manufactured at :1 comparatively small cost, and to attain the above objects by a door that is simple in construction, durable, easy to handle and highly eifieient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

A door in accordance with my invention comprises a rectangular body 1 of concrete or other plastic material that can be molded in asuitable mold to form the structure. In
the rectangular body 1 there is embedded a plurality of pipes 2 for the reception of a cooling medium. The pi es 2 are disposed in a U-shaped manner an are connected together by elbows 3 with the upper ends of the vertical pipes The pipes are located in proximity to the vertical edges of the door and the pipe is provided with a flexible connection 4, as a tube, to admit wateror another cooling agent to the pipes, while the other exposed end is provided with connections 5 and a flexible connection 6, as a hose for the in the county of Alle-- protruding from the top I outlet of water, the through the pipes 2 the furnace.
The inner side of the body 1 is shaped to provide a rectangular recess or pocket 7 for fire-brick 8 or other non fusible material, the fire-brick being exposed to the heat at the doorway,9 of a furnace 10. The firebrick 8 adjacent to the lower edge thereof is provide with a peep opening 11 longitudinally alining with a similar opening 12 formed in the body 1, and pivotally mounted, as at 13 upon the front side of the body 1 isa shutter 14 adapted to close the outer end of the opening 12, said shutte having a suitable handle 15.
In the front side of the body 1 adjacent to the vertical. edges thereof are staples 16 adapted to receive hooks or other fastening means 17 carried by the front side of the furnace body 1 adjacent to the doorway 9, these hooks retaining the door within the doorway.
Mounted in the upper front edges of the body 1 are straps l8 and connected to these straps are hoisting chains or cables 19 adapted to move the door out of the doorway 9 whereby the contents of the furnace can be drawn.
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the strutural ele ments thereof can be varied or changed, as to the size,- shape and manner of assembla 'e without departing from the scope of tie appended claim.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A furnace door comprising a unitary rectangular concrete body having its inner face provided with a relatively rectangular recess surrounded by a relatively wide marginal portion, said body further provided at its lower end with apeep opening, an elongated shutter pivoted at its upper end to the outer face of said body and having an enlarged lower end for closing said open ing, a handle connected to the shutter for shifting it, means for conducting a cooling medium through the bottom and side marginal portions of said body, said means opening through the top of said body at each end thereof, an insert formed'of rows of fire brick completely filling said recess and. having the exposed face thereof flush with the marginal portions of the inner face water being circulated during the operation of of said body, said insert formed with an receive fastening means for retaining the aperture registering with the peep opening door in position. 10 of the body, means for supplying and With- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature drawing a cooling medium to and from said in the presence of two Witnesses.
