Description

' F. K. WRIGHT. BAIL FOR LANTERNS, 6w. APPLICATION FILED MAR. 24, 1909.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
FREDERICK K. WRIGHT, 0F SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
BAIL FOR LANTERNS, 860.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 24-, 1909.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
Serial No. 485,379.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F REDERIGK K. \VRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bails for Lanterns, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the wire bails of lanterns and other articles which are carried about, and has for its object to render the wire bail more convenient, stiffer and stronger by means of a gripping strip of wood or other suitable material in which the wire bail is embedded and which is arranged to be seized by the hand in carrying the lantern or other article.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure I is an elevation, partly in section, of a lan tern provided with this improved bail. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the bail at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section in line 3-3, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents a lantern or other article to which the composite bail is applied.
B represents the wire bail which is provided with the usual eyes 6 for engaging the bail ears 0 of, the lantern or other article. This wire bail comprises lower, substantially upright portions (Z extending from the eyes upwardly, and upper, substantially upright portions 6 connected with the lower portions d by offsets f, and an arched top portion 9 connecting the upper ends of the upper portions e.
H represents the gripping strip which is so shaped as to fit the wire bail above the offsets f, this strip comprising substantially upright side portions 17. which fit against the inner sides of the upper upright portions 6 of the wire bail and an arched top portion 2' which fits against the under side of the arched top portion 9' of the wire bail.
The gripping strip is approximately round in cross section and is provided in its outer side with a longitudinal groove is for the reception of the adjacent portion of the wire bail, which latter is embedded in this groove and lies flush with the surface of the strip, as represented in Fig. 3. The gripping strip bears with its ends against the offsets f of the Wire bail, and the strip is held in this manner in close contact with the adsists in keeping the wire bail and the gripping strip in close contact, even if the wood of the grlpplng strip shrinks in course of time.
The end portions of the gripping strlp are preferably provided with ferrules Z to guard against splitting of the strip, and the arched top portion of the strip is preferably provided at its crown with a ferrule m for holding the strip and wire together if the strip should shrink.
The gripping strip is preferably made of wood, but if desired, other materials having similar qualities may be used.
The gripping strip forms an enlargement of the bail of such size as to be firmly and conveniently grasped and strengthens and stiffens the wire bail and renders the same more durable. If the gripping strip should be accidentally broken, the wire bail will hold the parts in position until the strip can be renewed.
I claim as my invention:
A composite bail comprising an outer wire bail having an arched main portion and straight side portions extending from the ends thereof, and a gripping strip having a corresponding arched main portion and straight side portions, said strip having in its outer side a longitudinal groove in which the wire bail is embedded, whereby the arched main portion of the strip serves to hold the parts in close contact and the straight side portions prevent lengthwise displacement of the parts, substantially as set forth.
Witness my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK K. WRIGHT.
