Be it known that I, REUBEN TREBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cash-Registers, of which the following is a specification, ref- ,rerence being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to the class of cash registers which have automatic registering devices therein which may be secured under lock.

The object of my invention is to provide a device in which all parts are of metal or wood and to eliminate paper registers and their mechanism. I attain these objects as well as other advantages, by the construction, combination and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective front view of my device with the drawer open. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line A-A of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a part of the top of the device as shown in Fig. 1 partly broken away and also showing the indicator and register mechanism. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the device on the line BHB of Fig. 2.

tance within the space 7 The bar 10 has a yhorizontal operating pin 12 secured to the front thereof, extending beyond the front end of the box D. Above the pin is a recess 13 in the front side of the box to receive the pin when the bar 10 is raised.

The registering mechanism is as follows z- 'Within the space 7 vertically movable signal blocks 14 are placed above the arm 10. Each of the blocks 14 bears a denominational number on the lower part of its face and is formed with a locking recess 15 in its rear face. Right angled locking springs 16 are secured to the rear of the wall 7 opposite each signal block 14 and extend into the respective recesses 15 of the blocks. Vertical releasing arms 17 extend from the angles of the springs 1G upward into engagement with arms 20 of the pawl bars in the registering mechanism.

A series of longitudinal grooves 19 are formed in the upper side of the secondary bottom 6. A series of horizontal pawl bars 18 are placed in the grooves 19 of the bottom 6, alined with the signal blocks 14 and slidable in said grooves and within the compartment ai. The pawl bars have arms 20 on their forward ends, extending downward through openings 21 in the bottom 6, into engagement with the releasing arms 17. Keys 22 are secured to the ends of the pawl bars and extending horizontally therefrom through openings 28 in the front end of the box and have denominational numbers upon thumb plates 24 secured to their outer ends. The pawl bars 18 also have pawls 25 on their side edges in suitable position, recoil springs 26 at their rear ends, and vertical arms 27 extending downward therefrom into contact with arms 32 of the bell lever mechanism.

A series of registering bars 28 with denominational numbers on their upper surfaces are placed in the grooves 19 and are slidable therein alongside the pawl bars 18. The registering bars 28 have ratchets 2.9-29 in their side edges. On one side of the grooves 19 are pawls 30 arranged to engage the ratchets 29 of the registering bars. The numbers on the registering bar are placed opposite its ratchets and in position to be visible through the openings w of the lid w. The ratchets 29 engage the pawls 25.

Below the bottom G and secured to its lower surface is a bell 31 near the rear of the compartment ai', and above the drawer D. lransversely of the box and within the compartment D in front of the bell is placed a rotatable shaft 32 having rigid arms 33 thereon in position to engage the arms 27 of the pawl bars 18.

Near the center of the shaft 32 and opposite the bell 31 a bell crank lever 3l is rigidly secured to said shaft 32. The lever 31 has a recoil spring 35 and is in position to engage the end of a. bell striker 36. The latter is pivoted upon the rear wall of the box in position to strike the bell.

It will now be seen that in order to open the drawer and register in a sum of money, the pin 12 of the locking bar 10 is grasped and the bar 10 raised. This lifts all signal blocks lil which may be down, into locking engagement with their respective locking springs 16 and also raises the locking arm 11 from its engagement with the spring catch 9. The recoil spring y then forces the drawer forward and upon dropping the bar 10 the locking arm 11 drops back of the spring catch 9 and the drawer may be pulled out to gain access to it. A thumb plate 24C on a key 22 of the denomination which it is desired to register is then pressed inwardly. This operation causes the opposing signal block to drop in the space 7 and its numeral to become visible through the box opening 6, it also causes the pawl bar 18 opposite that block to move to the rear and in doing so its pawl 25 engages the ratchet 29 of the registering bar 28 then opposite and causes this bar to move one space, the bar being held there by the pawl 30 engaging a ratchet 29 on the opposite side. The number on the register bar then registered becomes visible through the opening tu of the lid. On releasing the bar 18 the spring 26 causes it to return to its outward position. The money having been deposited in the drawer it is pressed inward, the locking arm 11 depressing the spring catch 9 and passing by it the catch returns to position and again locks the drawer. Then the registering arm is pressed forward it also engages the bell mechanism and rings the bell with the same movement.

Then one or more registering bars have registered amounts indicated thereon to their respective limit, the lid fw is unlocked and either a registering arm for smaller denominations is pressed forward and its total registered again upon a bar having larger denominations, or the entire cash is computed and all registering bars are pressed forward to begin new registration. The lid is then locked until the next inspection.

The registering bars are of short length and the denominational numbers thereon are fixed as shown with regard to the use of my device particularly in barber shops, although it may be used in other places of business for which its capacity adapts it.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. In a cash register box having a securable lid, the combination of a drawer having a. longitudinal central compartment, a spring catch within the compartment and a recoil spring, with a transverse bar vertically slidable immediately in the rear of the front wall of the box, said bar having means to raise it and a. vertical locking arm in its center which extends downward into the central compartment of said drawer and is in engagement with the said spring catch when the drawer is shut, substantially as described.

2. In a cash register box provided with a securable lid and a drawer having means to lock and open it; registering mechanism comprising a series of register bars bearing numerals, slidable and placed in horizontal grooves formed in the box beneath the lid, said bars having ratchets in their edges, and movable pawl bars extending without the box and within it horizontally alongside the register bars, said pawl bars being provided with pawls in position to engage the register bar ratchets, also with recoil springs, substantially as described.

3. In a cash register box having a longitudinal opening in its front wall, a secur able lid and a drawer with means to lock and open it; signal mechanism comprising a series of signal blocks bearing numerals, placed within and vertically movable in a space immediately back of the front box wall, right angled spring catches in the rear of the blocks in position to lock them when raised, a horizontal lever having a recoil spring, extending without the box and through a groove within it, having an arm dependent from it in position to engage and release the box catches and drop the blocks into position visible through the box opening, and means to raise the signal blocks singly or together into locked position, sub stantially as described.
