To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CLAIR MUNsoN and JoHN JACKSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chair-Seats, of which the following is a specification.

his invention relates to portable chair seats of that character set forth in Letters Patent granted to us November 21, 1905, No. 805,204; and the object thereof is to provide a portable seat with gimp around its margin and to secure the gimp to the seat body in a manner as hereinafter set forth so that when the seat is secured to the seat frame the securing means for the gimp will be covered or concealed by the hold'fast devices for securing the chair seat in position, the securing means for the gimp being independent of the hold-fast means for the chair seat so that the portable chair seat with gimp attached can be sold as a unitary body, thus enabling one unskilled in the art to finish a. seat with gimp, thereby improv' ing the appearance of the seat.

Although the invention is particularly designed for use in connection with the form of chair-seat disclosed in Patent No. 805,204t hereinbefore referred to yet the invention is adapted for any purposes or for any form of seat for which it is found applicable.

The invention further aims to provide a chair-seat with gimp attached which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, readily attached and removed from a seatframe, compact, efficient in use, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention; but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto a p.- pended.

In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

While the chair-seat as herein shown is approximately trapezoidal in contour, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to this particular configuration as any shape of seat found necessary or desirable, may be employed.

It is further to be understood that the chair-seat is adapted for use in factories or for repair purposes in which latter case, it

will be furnished to the user ready to be fastened in position with gimp attached.

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the base or back of the seat, the same constructed of any suitable material, such as sheet steel, and of any preferred contour.

Arranged adjacent to the perimeter of the back in a manner as set forth in Letters Patent No. $05,204:, is a series of attaching lugs 6; see Fig. 3. Only one of these lugs is the said lugs (i constituting what may be termed the cover-attaching means and are formed by striking out of the metal by any suitable means; and the cover 7 is secured to the base 5 by the said lugs 6 clamping the cover in position, as shown in Fig. 3. Mounted upon the base 5 is a packing 8 which the cover 7 incloses. The base 5 is furthermore provided with a series of openings 9 which are arranged in parallelism with respect to the perimeter of the base and at a point intermediate the lugs 6 and the perimeter. These openings 9 are provided to permit of the holdfast devices 10, which constitute means for securing the seat to a seat-frame or other support. Such devices 10 may be ordinary headed tacks, as shown, or any other suitable means. The cover 7 is formed with openings 11 which are arranged in alinement with the openings 9 formed in the base 5, and through the said openings 9 and 11 are adapted to pass the holdfast devices 10.

The foregoing is a brief description of the form of chair-seat set forth in Letters Patcut N 0-. 895,204, said form of chair-seat being one form with which the invention is adibted to be used.

The gimp is indicated by the reference character 12 and which is positioned around the margin of the chair-seat and has the outer edge thereof flush with the chair-seat, and the gimp is retained in position by the securing means 13 in the form of headed tacks, but any other suitable securing means may be employed. The tacks 13 are adapted to extend down through the openings 14 formed in the base 5 and arranged in close proximity to the openings 9, and the lower ends of the tacks 13 are clenched to the seat, as shown in Fig. 3, which clamps the gimp to the seat and prevents the tacks 13 from being pulled out. The heads of the tacks 13 are arranged in close proximity to the openings 11 so that when theholdfast devices 10 are employed to secure the seat to the seatframe, or other suitable support, the head 15 of the holdfast devices 10 will inclose or conceal the upper end 16 means for the gimp.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection a with the accompanying drawings, it is evident that by setting up the gimp in the manner as stated, the perimeter of the seat has its appearance improved; and also that when the chair-seat is secured in position by the enlarged headed tacks, or other suitable means, the securing means for the gimp is inclosed and concealed, which also tends to improve the appearance of the seat when it is secured to the seatframe or other support.

Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure of the securing by Letters Patent, is:

1. A portable seat provided with gimp and a seriesof pairs of openings, one of the openings of each pair adapted to receive hold-fast devices with enlarged heads, holdfast devices extending through the other of the openings and clenched to the side for securing the gimp thereto, said hold-fast de vices for securing the gimp adapted to be concealed by the heads of the hold-fast devices for securing the seat in position.

2, A portable seat comprising a basev provided with a series of pairs of openings, the openings of each pair being arranged in openings of each 4 to the base,

close proximity to each other, a cover in closing the base, gimp positioned upon the margin of the seat, means extending through an opening of each of the pairs of openings and secured to the base for connecting the gimp to the cover, the other of said openings of said pair of openings adapted to receive hold-fast devices for securin the seat to a chair, said hold-fast devices or securing the seat to the chair adapted to conceal the hold-fast devices gimp to the cover.

3. A portable seat comprising a base provided with a series of pairs of openings arranged entirely around the perimeter thereof, the openings of each pair arranged in close proximity to each other, one of said openings of each pair of openings adapted to have hold-fast devices extending therethrough for securing the seat to a support, a cover inclosing the base and connected thereto, gimp mounted in proximity to the edge of the seat, and gimp securing means extendingthrough the other of said openings, of each pair of openings and adapted to be concealed by the hold-fast devices for securing the seat in position. a

4. A portable seat comprising a base provided with a series of pairs of openings arranged entirely around the perimeter thereof, the openings of each pair arranged in close proximity to each other, one of said pair of openings adapted to have hold-fast devices extending theret-hrough for securing the seat to a support, a cover inclosing the base and connected thereto, gimp mounted in proximity to the edge of the seat, and hold-fast devices extending through the gimp, cover and the other opening of each pair of openings and clenched thereby securing the gimp to the cover, said last mentioned hold-fast devices adapted to be concealed by the hold-fast devices for securing the seat in position.
