lo. all whom it/may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. EDISON,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Llewellyn Park, Orange, county of Essex and State of VNew Jersey, yhave invente certain new and luseul. Improvements 'in Phonograph-Reproducers, ofv which the following is a description.
My invention relates to phonograph reproducers, more particularly of the type in which the stylus is carried by a'lever pivotally secured to a floating weight, said lever being connected to a diaphragm carried by the sound box, and my invention has for its object the vapplication of resilient `means to said lever for the purpose of counterbalanclng or opposing the vibrations of the said diaphragm, 4so as to eliminate false vibrations or overtones which pervert the quality of the reproductioincausing a harsh or metallic sound. -Said resilient means is preferably in the form of a diaphragm similar to the sound box diaphragm, so as to becapable of vibrating in the samemanner, that is,
ot' responding 1n the same way to all of lthe is clamped between gaskets 3, by the clamping ring 4, all of these parts being of wellknownl construction. A oating weight 5 is pivoted at (3 toa block 7, carried on the lower end of a vertical pin 8 which passes through the body 1. The upper end of said pin is threaded, and an elongated nut 9 en? gages the same, said nut being held in position by an inverted Icup 10 secured to the body 1, in any suitable manner. The nut 9 is provided with a head 11 for conveniencein turning and the pin 8 may be adjusted up and down to anydesired extent by rotation of the nut 9. The floating weight 5 is prefi erably of metal and along its free edge is secured a strip 12 forincreasing the pressure of' the stylus 13 on the record surface. The' said stylus is held in a socket formed in the 'Y vlever 14, and the latter is pivoted at 15 to a pair of lugs 16 depending fromthe Heating 'weight 5. 'One end of the` lever 14 is connected'v by secured to.- the center of thediaphragm 2, and the other end. of said lever is connected by alink 19 to a head 20, which is secured diaphragms, they are caused to` move simultaneously in opposite directions, whereby the pressure of the stylus upon the' record is equalized and rthe vibrations of the dia# anced.-
The diaphragm 21 may be a corrugated plate of hard copper, such as the diaphragm 2, although -my invention is not limited to .the particular form of diaphragm 21. The diaphragm 21 is situated within a recess formed in thev oating weight 5, 'and is or other suitable material, by means 'of screws 23, threaded in the weight 5, and countersunk 'within the cover plate 24, the. said screws securing said cover plate, gasweight 5. My l drawinghave shown me that the same will give an excellent reproduction of' sounds limit myself to the exact ,structure shown,
arrangements of. the parts thereof as will-be ered by the appended claims.
1. In a phonograph e roducer, the combination with the soun box, diaphragm, floating weight, `stylus lever pivoted thereto, and stylus, of a diaphragm carried by said lever,-substantially as set forth.
2. In a phonograph reproducer, bination with the sound box, floating weight, stylus lever pivoted thereto and stylus, of a diaphragm carried by'sald floating weight .and connected fto said stylus lever on the opposite side of its fulcrum from the point at which the first diaphragm is connected, substantially as'setforth.
3. In 'a phonograph reproducer, the comthe com- ;th'e link-17, which passes through an opening4 1n the floating weight, toa head 18 which isv phragm 2 are more perfectly counterbal- 'clamped between gaskets 22 of rubber, paper kets. and diaphragm firmly -to the iioatingA experiments with a reproducer constructed in accordance with the from a vphonograph record, but I do not and include all such modifications and reobvious to one skilled in the art and as cov-` floating weight and connecte'dto said' stylus diaphragm, l
l to the center of th'e diaphragm-21. By connecting opposite ends ofthe lever to the twov Having nowdescribed my invention, what lever pivotally` secured .to said weight, Ta
stylus carried thereby, and connections from one end ofthe said lever to one diaphragm, and from the other end ofthe lever to the v other diaphragm, substantially as set forth.
4. In a hono'graph reproducer, the combination withithe sound box and diaphragm,
- of a oating Weight, a block to-wh1ch said Weight is' pivoted,v and means ,for adjusting the vertical position of said block com? prising a threaded pin secured to saidbiock"4 v and en aging within a recess the sound 1.5-
