ENGINE FOR GRATE-SHAKERS.
Application filed July 24, 1909. Serial No. 509,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it: known=that I, IVILLIAM F. 'BAKER. a citizen .of the United States, residing at Antlers, in the county of Puslnnataha and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Engines for Grate- Shakers, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to engines for grate shakers and the object of my invention resides principally in the provision of a steam cylinder wherein is mounted for reciprocatory motion a piston adapted to be operatively connected with a grate, preferably of the rocking type.
A still further object of my invention re-, sides in the provision of a three way valve and the provision of a two way valve, the former being adapted for operation to al ternately admit steam to the ends of the cylinder so as to impart the desired reciprocatory motion to the piston, and the latter being employed for the purpose of cstal lishing an equal pressure of steam at both sides of the piston head.
Other objects and advantages will be ap-. parent as the nature of the invention is better disclosed, and it will of course be understood that changes within the specific scope of the claim can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the steam cylinder piston of my improved mechanical grate shaker. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail section through theinlet valve. Fig. l is a similar view through the valve for the bypass? My .improyed engine consists principally of a steam cylinder 1 which is disposed horizontally and is provided with removable heads 2 and 8. The head 3 is formed with a centrally located gland or packing box 4 through which the piston rod 5 is adapted to reciprocate. The pist on rod 5 is provided with a hollow piston 6 which has formed therein upon its peripheral face a pair of spaced annular grooves for the reception of packing rings 7. The inner faces of the heads 2 and 3 are provided with suitable well known cushioning elements 8 such as rubber'or the like. This pipe carries a three way rocking valve 10 to which is connected oppositely directed conveying pipes 11 and 12 the former being tapped into the head 2 and the latter tapped into the head 3. The three way valve as will be understood can be ofany well known form and any suitable well known means may be employed for imparting the desired rocking movement to the valve so thatsteam from the main source of steam supply can be alternately admitted to the ends of the cylinder.
From the construction just described it will be seen that when rocking motion is imparted to the valve 10 the steam as stated will be alternately admitted to two ends of the cylinder whereby reciprocatory motion will be imparted to the piston 6.
The cylinder 1 is provided approximately at its center with suitably spaced exhaust ports 13 and 1a which are adapted to be alternately covered and uncovered to permit the discharge of dead steam.
\V'hen the apparatus is in its normal or non-working stage it is desirable to hold the piston atthe center of the cylinder and to "accomplish this end 'I provide a two way rocking valve 15 which is connected with oppositely extending by-pass pipes 16. These pipes are tapped into the walls of the cylinder 1 and are disposed at the sides of the center of the cylinder. In operation of the herein described engine steam is conveyed alternately to the pipes 11 and 12 so as to reciprocate the piston as before mentioned. When the grate has been operated to the desired extent and it is desirable to have the motion of-the piston cease, the valve 10 is shutoff manually immediately after the passing of the piston beyond one of the exhaust ports and the valve 15 opened. In this manner the steam from one end of the cylinder can be partly conveyed to the other end wherebyan equal distribution of the steamsenergy will be distributed to two sides of the piston, thus holding the pistorr centrally of the steam cylinderand in a position to close both steam exhaust ports 13 and 14.
