To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID 1V. MONTAGUE, a native citizen oftheUnited States, residing at Shelley, in the county of Bingham and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpenters Squares, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in carpenters squares and embraces the construction of a combined tool which may be adjusted for cutting various angles and may be given practical use in cutting rafters.
One of the objects of the invention is the construction of a simple adjustable square which may be quickly adapted to out any desired angle in a rafter job, and when not in use may be folded into a compact condition.
Another object of the invention is the consti not ion of an adjustable square having angle defining members capable of longitudinal and pivotal adjustment and so arranged that the same can be easily adjusted to cut a number of different angles.
With the above and other objects in view the invention embraces certain constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view showing the device adjusted for cutting braces, Fig. 2 isa plan view showing the device when adjusted for use as a try square, Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the device adjusted for use in cutting rafters, Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the device partly folded, Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the device adjusted for cutting angles in jack rafters, Fig. (5 is plan view showing a modified form of the device, Fig. 7 is plan view of another modification, Fig. 8 is a detail view of a handle, and Fig. 9 is a detail view of a clamping dev1ce.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are prepared for illustrative purposes and are accordingly not drawn to scale, numeral 1 denotes the central connecting member or handle, said handle being formed with its outer ends bifurcated at 2 and 3, and with a longitudinal slot 4, disposed transversely of the slots in the bifurcated ends. An adjusting thumb screw 5 extends through the middle portion of the handle and 'a flat plate or bar, having a rounded end 6*, a beveled end 6 and a longitudinal slot 6, is adjustably secured in the Specification of Letters Patent.

slot 4 by means of said thumb screw. The plate or bar 6 is formed somewhat smaller than the length of the slot and is adapted to fold on the handle so as to nearly fill the slot. The bar 6 is useful in placing beams in corners and locating beams near various supports, the ends of the bar forming stops for the device.
A right angular member 7, having a rounded leg end 7 abeveled leg end 7 and leg slots 7 and 7, is adjustably secured on the bifurcated end 3 by means of a thumb adjusting screw 8, which extends through said end 3. The member 7 may be attached to the handle 1 by either of its legs and is capable of both pivotal and longitudinal adjustment thereon.
The handle end 2 carries a straight member 9, formed with a beveled end 9*, a tapering end 9 and a longitudinal slot 9. This member is adjustable on the end 2 by means of a thumb screw 10, extending through said end. The adjustment is both longitudinal and pivotal.
In Figs. 6, 7 and 9 are illustrated certain modifications comprising a member 1, a member 7 and a member 9, which are connected together by means of pivot connections 11, extending through the members in like manner to the thumb screws.
In Fig. 6 the drafting the lines of any roof, the blade 9 giving the lengths of the rafters.
In Fig. 7 is shown a modified view of the device in which a clamp 12 is secured to the blades 9 and 1. The clamping device 12 consists of two members 12 and 12 each of which is provided with inwardly projecting pins 13 and 14 located on opposite ends thereof. The pins 13 and 14 are adapted to engage with the slots in the blades and are connected together by means of a spring 15. The clamping device 12 serves to guide the movement of the blades against each other.
The blades and the handle are graduated in fractions and the device can be made in different sizes so as to be used for the construction of stairs, or as a stair gage, and for the shaping of stringers. By sultably manipulating the thumb screws the device can be readily adjusted for different angles and for different jobs.
Having described'my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In an angle defining device, a handle having bifurcated ends and a slot disposed device is shown adjusted for transversely of the slots of the bifurcated ends, a fiat member adjustable in the transversely disposed slot, at right angular memher having its legs slotted and adjustably secured on one of the bifurcated legs, and a fiat member having a slot therein adjustably secured on the other bifurcated leg.
2. In combination, a handle having its ends slotted and a longitudinal slot fonned in its center, a slotted member adjustably secured in the central slot, an angular I'n'emher having slots therein adjustably secured to one of the slotted ends of the handle, and a slotted member secured adjustably to the other end of the handle.
