To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN BAPTISTE CLER- MoN'r, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doorstand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in doors. In many high grade fire proof buildings the doors are either made of metal or of wood with metal coverings, which of course is more expensive than wooden doors, and more difticult and expensive to alter.

The object of my invention is to so construct a door either of wood or metal, that the fittings for same can, when necessary, be applied to either edge or side of the door, or changed from one side to the other, when it becomes necessary by changing the hand of the door, without altering the door, and with this end in view my invention consists in a door adapted to be permanently hinged at one side edge and having openings of the same size and shape, one in each stile of the door, one opening adapted to receive a lock, and the other opening another article of builders hardware, the lock and other article being interchangeable.

My invention further consists in certain details in construction as will be more fully explained and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of a section of a door and its frame showing a lock in one stile and a letter plate in the other. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the door adapted for the attachment of rim butt hinges, to either stile thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a door the stiles of which are mortised to receive the butts. Fig. dis a View in section on the line B, B, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the line A A of Fig. 2 and Fig. 6 is a similar view on the line C C of Fig. 3.

size, shape and location, so that either may receive the lock, and the other a letter plate, a finish plate, or other article of door trim to close the slot. These slots are so located with relation to the edges of the door, that the latter may be hung from either stile, and the lock secured in its proper slot without any cutting or fitting, or a door already in place, may be changed to swing from the other stile, and the lock and letter plate or other article re-arranged in the proper slots without any cutting or fitting whatsoever. The two slots or openings 2 may be fitted with any type of lock, and letter plate or other article of door trim, which may be of any suitable construction and attached in any preferred way. For purposes of illustration I have shown the lock attachment shown and described in Patent No. 902,044 granted to Peter F. Augenbraun October 27th, 1908, closing one opening and a letter plate the other.

The letter plate comprises an outer frame 3 preferably conforming in shape and size to the escutcheon plate of the lock and provided with an inwardly projecting throat 4 preferably rectangular in shape. This throat rests in the opening in the door and is normally closed by the spring actuated hinged shutter 5 which opens inwardly by a pressure against its outer face, and which closes upon the withdrawal of the pressure.

latter conforming in position and shape to the throat 1 on plate 3. The two plates 3 and 6 are secured against the opposite faces of the door by the screws 8 which are passed through holes in the inner plate 6, through holes in the door corresponding in position to the holes through which the screws 9 of the lock attachment pass, and engage internally threaded bosses 10 on the inner face of the outer plate 3.

In Figs. 2 and 4: I have shown the door provided near its upper and lower ends, and at both edges with four holes for the passage of bolts 11 which secure the rim butts 12 in place, the holes near the opposite edge of the door being closed by the bolts 13.

In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 6, the mortises on the free edge of the door, corresponding to the mortises in which the mortise butts of the hinges 14 are seated and secured, are filled by the filling pieces 15 secured in place by screws.

With my improvement the door can be completed without regard to the location of the lock. By providing two openings alike, as to size and shape, the lock can be secured to the outer stile, and the letter plate or other piece of hardware or trim, which is designed to conform to the shape and size of the escutcheon plate, in the other hole. In this way I provide for the attachment of two essentials to an oflice door without any cutting or fitting after the door has been constructed, which permits the door to be hung from either edge, and at the same time provides for the changing of the attachments from one side of the door to the other.

It is evident that many slight changes might be resorted to in the relative arrangement of parts shown and described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention hence I would have it understood that I do not wish to confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but,

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let.- ters-Patent, is

1. The combination with a door having openings of the same size and shape, one in each side or stile of the door, of a lock and a letter plate constructed to be inter ehangeably secured within said openings.

2. The combination with a door adapted to be permanently hinged at one side edge and having openings of the same size and shape one in each stile of the door, of a lock and a letter plate constructed to be interchangeably secured within said openings.

3. The combination with a door having openings of the same size and shape, one in H each stile of the door, of a lock and letter plate each constructed to be secured in either opening, whereby they are inter changeable.
