Patented Nev. 1, 1910.
Application filed May 11, 1910.' Serial No. 560,663.
To alt' whom 'itmay concern:
Be it known that I, LILLA ALLEN, a .citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Vilkinson and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Refrigerators, ofwhich the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to refrigerators and the object of the invention is to provide a novel refrigerating boX with cooling shelves therein which are made hollow to' receive the refrigerating element. l
A further object of the invention is the provision of shelves of this character which .are provided with sockets ory recesses for receiving the receptacles so that said receptacles .are practically surrounded by a refifgeratfihg Aelement.-V
Av-still further object of the invention is the' provision of means for supplying a re-'f frigerating element to the shelves, and means for drawing. off the refrigerating element from the shelves so as to maintain an even temperature yat a miximumrefrigerating degree.
l Further. objects ofthe invention will ap- .Mpearlas the followingpspec'iffic description is l represents the easing read ""n connection with'the accompanyingl drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of the refrigerator showing the door in open.posi
tllion.. Fig. 2 is a vertical section l taken Re err-ing m'ore es ec'ially to the drawing "p which'is preferably linedwith asbestos,'mmeral wool,charcoal,
l ment.
' orother suitable non-conducting heat element, ,which iiis'ulatesthe inner part 2 of the refrigerator. .from the outside tempera-- i tures.
@ntheinner side ofthe casing 1 adjacent one endthereof, is placed a tank 3 which* extends from vthe bottom to the top ofthe casingfand has an opening. 4 in its Tipper. to
endzwhich is covered'by a door'5 hinge the 'casingv and provided for the urpose of ljlin 'f the tank with a refrigerating ele- Xtending laterally from the tank across' the inner space 2 are hollow shelves indirect communication with the tank 3I ment l0 which ,iills the tank and the shelves.
' hile only two shelves 6 and 7 have been shown, there may be any number desired. 'It will be noticed that the shelf Gff'orms a cooling top for the receptacle'supon the shelf 7 and in order to provide av cooling Atop for the upper shelf 6 there isV secured to the tank a hollow arm 11 which extends across the upper part of the space 2 and has its free end supported upon a bracket`l2.
lA suitable faucet lfi's connected with the lower end o f the tank 3 so that the refrigerating element 'may be drained from the tank the shelves have their bottoms slightly inclined so that the same will be completely drained upon opening of the faucet 13. Each shelf'is also provided with a drip cock 14 by which the comparatively warm refrig' erating elementwithin the shelves may be fdrawn off and a fresh refrigerating element from the tank supplied thereto. The lower part of the casingis defined by a platform l5v which 'forms the top for suitable drawers 16 which are mounted on the bottom of the casing and are separated by :1a-'partition 17. These drawers maybe dispensed with and an arm similar tothe arm 11 may be connected to the tank for forming a bottom cooling wall:
Thetank and shelves may be filled with any suitable refrigerating element such as' iced water or a saline solution which is andv from the shelves, it being noticed that cooled by ammonia vapor or in any other suitable manner. The device may be packed with ice and the shelves adapted to circulate thecold 'air therefrom. y
I also contemplate the use of the device as a irelessrooker, .using -of course boiling water or any other liquid heating element in the tank and Shelves. The material to be cookedis first .boiled in receptacles and then placed in the recesses in the shelves and allowed to remain until cooked in the manner of the ordinarydireless cooker.
. Havinglthus described the invention, what is claimed, is I A refrigerator comprising a casing, a supply tank i'n the casing, hollow shelves commnncating with said tank, said shelves hav- In testimony whereof I afx my signature ing, their upper faces formed with recesses in presence of two Witnesses. to receive receptacles and their bottom faces LILLA ALLFN inclined from the tank, means for support- 'J il ing the free ends of the shelves, means for Witnesses:
draining the tank, and independent means J. B. LAND, for draining the separate shelves. S. N. CHAMPION.
