BOT AND SIE-E CONSTRUCTICON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. l, 19M?,
Application filed. March 9, 1908. Serial No. 419,968.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN THOMAS WoonsfroN, of Towcester, in the county of Northampton, England, have invented new and i useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Construetlons, of which the following 1s a specication.
rllhis invention relates to that class o boot,
shoe, and the like, in which a detachable and removable outer sole is employed. In certain of these forms oit boots, or the like, as heretofore made, the upper is sewn to a v middle sole, and this latter is chamfered I its ordinary appearance.
or cut away aroundits edge,i so formino, between itself and the upper, .a channel or 'groove into-which the detachable and re- .movable outer sole lies, when Vslid on to the middle sole. it is found in practice, however, that the said detachable sole, notwithstanding that when it is applied and se-i cured in position by screws, is, at times,
liable to be knocked off altogether, either under-the direct influence of severe impact` or by creeping forward and thereby cansino; it to project beyond the toe of the boot, which again renders it extremely liable to be dctached from the boot; this creeping having the further disadvantage of imparting an uglyappearanee to the boot.
Now, the object of the present invention is to provide a boot, or the like` in which the rdetachable and removable soltmshall, at ail times, during` wear, have a firm support or bearing surface, so preventing' all possibility of its becoming detached, or creeping, while further preserving for the hoot, or the like, And in order that the invention may be readily understood, l. will now describe it fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a side view of the improved boot, with the detachable or removable outer thereon.
sole removed therefrom. Fig. Q is an underside AView of the same, also with the detachable sole removed therefrom, Fig. 3 is `a side view with the detachable sole in position Fig. 4; is an inverted plan of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line x, a, of Fig. l, looking` in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is an inner lace View of the-detachable and removable outer same parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In carrying` out the invention, the boot is provided with a middle sole a, which is g sewn, or nailed (or both) thereto, and is arranged .to project, to any appropriate distance beyond and around Vthe forward partl of the upper l), and to form as it were a welt el, so giving to the boot great additional strength, and imparting to it the appearance of an ordinary boot, even when the detachable and removable cuter sole is absent.
To the underside of the middle sole a, there is attached by sewing, or in 'any other convenient manner, a through sole e, of corresponding shape, but of smaller dimensions, as clearly shown in Figs. l, 2' ando, and having a chamfered edge el. An angular channel or groove f, of suitable depth and width, vfis thus constituted between the:
middle sole a, and the through sole e, and not, as in former constructions, between the upper and the middle sole; and at the rear end of the middle sole, and b'etween it and the through sole, a reenteriug angle e2 is formed, against which the removable sole abuts when slid into position. On to this through sole e, the detachable and removable outer sole g is slid, its edge then lying flush vertically with the edge of the middle sole a., as seen in Fig'. 3, and
the rim or periphery of said middle sole forming a support or extended bearing surface for the detachable outer sole g, andeti'ectually preventing it from creeping when secured in place. y V
The construction of the detachable and removable outer sole g, used in conjunction with this improved boot, or the like, is in no wise altered or modified from that of previous constructions, that is to'say, it is provided with a ,'peripheral welt g1 (see Figs. G and 7) so shaped and attached toits inner face aseto t'orm a channel g2, and permit it to pass readily-over, or on to, the Chamfered edge el of the through sole e, and to lie within the channel or groove f, between the middle sole a, and the through sole e, when slid on to this latter sole. The said detachable outer sole may extend, as formerly,
up to the waist o, of the boot, or the like;
but, if found convenient, or necessary, it
may be made to extend up to the middle of the waist, or up to the heel h, and be then secured in position by screws z', or rivets, the
heads oiwhieh areprelferably oonteisunk, but any other suitable means of attachment inay be employed. The detachable and removable outer sole g, can `be made to fit flush,
-v or form a butt joint, with the Waist; or to lie under the Waist, in which 'case it Would be tong-ned at its inner-'endg 'or it may be ar ran 'ed to lie over the Waist, so forming a kin of clump sole.
With a boot, or the like, thus constructed,
a detachable heel, or a fixed heel, may be applied, as may be required. In the drawings a ldetachable heel is shown by Way of example in'v Fig; 2.
-15 Having now described my invention, what I ,claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-is: y y
A boot or shoe, having in combination, a middle sole secured to the u per and pro- 20 jectin'g beyondxthe same to a ord a Welt, a through sole secured to the under face of themiddle sole, said through sole correspending in shape to the middle solebut be ing of smaller dimensions and having its edge or periphery chamfered, a removable outer sole having a built up edge Welt all the soles and the edge'welt being ofleather, thel outer sole being `slid over the through sole and its edge Welt engaging over the my name in the presence of twosubscribing Witnesses. f .f JOI-IN THOMAS VVOOLSTON.
