Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

lament-m 074,728. n Patented Nov. 1, 191
a umnaanemw 11,1010. lartat'Ie. aa'ma'a. a To all whom it may concern: I J the members 8 and 4 are arranged in op Be it. known that I, Josnru M. Women, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltockwood, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, ntre invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to im rovcments in ties for rails, and the object o the invention is to provide a metallic tie of a comparatively cheap and thoroughly efl'ective construction, com risin substantially a pair of cram-sectional y U-s taped members raving their upper faces slit and the metal of the said slits being bent npwardl so as to provide integrally formed base i ange' cnga ing members, the tics hariu their meeting aces Berovided with cllicient ocking members and ing further provided with removable eecaring elements whereby the said members are sustained in proper position with each other.
With the above, and other objects in view, which will appear as the description irogmales, the invention resides in the novc construction and combination of parts heroinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated a simple and preferred embodiment of the improvement, and in which drawings,
Figure l is a perspective view of a road bed llustrating a pair of rails snppm'ted by my unproved ties. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspect ve view of one of the ties. Fig. 3 is a sundae view of one of the members of the tie. F g. 4 is, a longitudinal sectional view taken through the memlwrs forming the tie.
In the uqsnnpanying dmwings the numeral 1 designates a pair of railway rails of the ordinary mmstrnction aml 2 the tics adapted to support the said rails. Each of the ties 2 comprises a pair of Int-minus?! and 4, the said members being each mmstrtn'tt-d' of longitndlnallv extending substantially cues Nmtiollnlly U-nhap'od metallic nn'ndn'm. The umror'portions of tho nn-mla-m it and t are slit adjacent their ends, and the portion provided by these. slits is bent upwardly to 'form the rail engaging clamps designated by the numeral 5. By aferenre to Figs. 2 and ii of the drawtugs it will be noted that the clamps 5 upon of said lnclnla-rs boin the base flanges of the rail 1 and where the said flanges of the rails may be eth t rely and securely retained in proper pn tron upon the ties. The connecting faces the sections 8 and 4 are each provided wi a beveled outturned portion dealgnated the numeral 8 ad acent one of ita enda wh ad acent ita op to end the said meml is provided w: a slot 7. The outturn beveled portion 6 of one of the members adapted to engage with the alot 7 upon t opposite member when the said membt are m the position illustrated in.Figa. 1, and 4 of the drawings. The connecting p1 tions or facee of the members 9 and 8 I provided adjacent their enda with auital openings 8, the aame being adapted for t reception of detachable securing elemei such as the usual bolts 9. In order to lethe weight of the membera 8 and 4, at w as to permit the ballast paaaing from o of the tie members to the other and fin: secure the ties upon the rail bed the ct necting faces of the said members are cl trally cut away in the formation of a d mood as ilhiatrated in Figs. 3 and 4 of t drawinga, and from the foregoing dnori tion, it is believed that-the method of ct nectmg the membera 8 and 4 a wall aa t efli cieney of the tie will he a parent t9 thi skilled m the art to which t e invention I pertains.
It will be noted by providing the be a bone with beveled members 0, theaaxd a tions may be easily and uiekly. b. t it 'In'oper position with can t other, no 't t l claim as new is:-
