To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, ILLIAM THOMAS BUOKINGHAM ROBERTS, a sub]ect of the v King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Leicester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Trimming the Heels of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to machines performing the operations that are commonly known as trimming, or as trimming and breast-ing heels, before they are attached to boots or shoes.
Certain features of the invention are more particularly directed toward enabling the performance of the before mentioned operations separately on each of the parts that constitute a renewable heel, that is made in two parts, one of which is securely fastened to the shoe, and the other of which forms a renewable tread face.
Broadly speaking, the invention consists in a machine provided with means for positioning and clamping a heel in relation to a coperating rotary cutter, in such a manner that without being unclamped, the heel may be trimmed all around its margin including its breast surface.
According to one feature of this invention, the clamping devices are constituted as two members adapted to engage the opposite faces respectively of the heel, or when the heel is made in two parts, each part may be held separately to be trimmed and breasted. In cases where the heel is partly renewable, the parts are each preferably positioned in the machine by a suitable clamping member formed to correspond with the shape of the inter-locking portion of the part of the heel to which it is allotted.
The clamping devices which engage the heel on either side are preferably interconnected together in such a manner as to rotate in unison, and are so arranged as to present the heel to a rotary cutter suitably formed for both trimmingnd breasting it.
A further feature of the invention consists in the provision of means for controlling the general contour to which the margin and breast of the heel is to be trimmed, and also the pitch or angle of the said margin when viewed laterally. Such controlling means preferably comprise two cams, one of Specification of Letters Patent.

which corresponds to the contour of the heel, and the other to the pitch thereof. These cams are rotated in unison with the heel and work against suitable abutments, or rollers7 and preferably are made in sets interchangeable to suit different shapes of heels.
A specific construction of machine em* bodying these and other features of the present invention, and adapted, by way of example, for use in trimming and breasting a sectional or two part heel will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan of the machine. Fig. 2 a side elevation partially in section of the head of the machine. Fig. 3 an end elevation partially in section. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a two part or sectional heel showing the manner of associating theV parts thereof.
According to the machine illustrated, each portion of the heel to be trimmed and breasted is, separately, held in a rotatable clamping device which presents each port-ion of the margin of the heel part to a rotary cutter. The two members a I) of the clamping device are carried in a bracket f which is mounted on a horizontal pivot f1, so as to be capable of vibrating in a vertical plane. rl`he member b is furnished with a forming cam (Z, which bears against a roller Z1 mounted adjacent to a rotary cutter c. The periphery of the forming cam ci corresponds to the periphery of the heel, and during the rotation of the latter, together with the cam, the bracket f whereon these parts are mounted is so actuated about its pivot f1 as to advance and retract the heel toward, and away from, the cutter c thereby trimming the heel to the contour required for the margin and the breast thereof.
To Vary the pitch or angle at which the heel is to be presented to the cut-ter, the clamp carrying bracket f is pivoted to another member g,arranged to turn about a vertical axis g1 which intersects the periphery of the cutter c in a line with the position of the interlocking face of the heel part that is being trimmed.
Approximately coincident with the pivotal axis f1 of the bracket f, is a counter shaft b3, which is driven from a shaft b4 of the clamping device, and which is provided with a suitably shaped cam e that bears against a roller el mounted upon the machine frame h. The cam c determines the angular position of the member g, and with it the angular motion of the clamp-carrying bracket f, and the heel, about the axis g1, that crosses the periphery of the cutter. The bracket j', may be controlled by a spring f4, so arranged as to maintain the cam l in engagement with the roller (Z1, or it may be positively driven.
To secure the seat portion of the heel in the clamping device, a rod f5 is provided which passes through the center of the shaft b4 whereby the device is rotated. rI`he inner extremity of the rod f5 is screw threaded to enter the nut or barrel fc, usually contained in the seat portion of the heel, While the opposite extremity of the rod is furnished with a knurled head f6 for rotating said rod.
The face b2 of the member L is preferably formed with a dovetail m, which corresponds to the inter-locking face of the seat portion and which acts as a positioning device for the heel. The shaft ZJ, which carries the clamping device, may be rotated by a hand-wheel bu, or by any other suitable means.
To secure the tread portion of the heel in the clamp during trimming, the member a is mounted upontlie inner end of a shaft al, arranged co-axial with the shaft b* pertaining to the member Z). The outer end of the shaft al is screw threaded and works in a nut a, which serves to feed the member a forward to clamp the tread of the heel against the member b. The rod f5 which passes through the shaft bt of the member Z), is preferably screwed into the member a, so as to secure the two members together.
Upon the outer extremity of the shaft al, is mounted a gear wheel a2, which corresponds with a gear wheel 57 mounted upon the outer extremity of the shaft b4 pertaining to the member of the clamping device, and these wheels are inter-connected by means of gear wheels a3, bs, respectively mounted upon the opposite extremities of an'idle shaft This idle shaft is driven by said gear wheels, and, in turn, drives the shaft 3, Whereon is mounted the cam e for varying the pitch or angle at which the heel 1 is presented to the cutter. In this manner the cam turns in unison with the heel being trimmed. .p
In order to adjust the heel relatively to the cutter c, and thereby the amount of cut, the roller d1, against which the forming cam cl bears, is mounted upon a slide dg, which is capable of being clamped, in its adjusted position, by means of a knurled nut d10, having a locking handle du, or by any other suitable means.
It is to be understood that various moditications may be made in the hereinbefore described machine without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I-Iaving now described my invention, what I claim isl. A machine for trimming heels of boots or shoes comprising a rotary cutter, clamping devices for holding the heel and provided with securing means for connecting said clamping devices and holding the heel thereto, the cutter and clamping devices having relative motion, means for causing the clamping devices to present the heel to the cutter, and means for transferring the line of operation of the cutter all around the margin and also the breast of the heel.
2. A machine for trimming heels for boots or shoes comprising a rotary cutter, clamping means for holding the heel and provided with securing means for connecting said clamping means and holding the heel thereto, the cutter and clamping means having relative motion and the clamping means presenting the heel to the cutter, means for causing the cutter to trim all around the margin and the breast of the heel, two cams automatically controlling the relative motion of the cutter and clamping means, one cam governing the margin and the other the breast of the heel, means for coupling the cams to move in unison with the clamping means, and operating mechanism.
