SOLE-ROUNDING MAflHiNE.
Application filed June 5, 1905, Serial No. 283,738.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, GIDEoN JULIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole-Rounding Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to solo rounding machines of that class which comprise a pattern, a rounding knife, and means for relatively moving the pattern and rounding knife to cause the knife to travel around the pattern.
The invention is intended primarily as an improvement on rounding machines of the class referred to in which the relative movement of the pattern and rounding knife is produced by moving the rounding knife around a stationary pattern. It is to be understood, however, that various features of my invention broadly considered are not limited to such machines but may be embodied in machines in which the relative movement of the pattern and rounding knife is produced by moving the pattern.
While my invention considered in its broader aspects may be embodied in a rounding machine in which the relative movement of the pattern and rounding knife is produced by moving either the pattern or the knife, in its preferred form it is embodied in a machcine in which the pattern is stationary and the rounding knife is moved around the pattern, as such a machine can be so designed as to be simple and compact in construction and certain and reliable in operation, and furthermore, can be used to cut soles from strips or sheets. of material as well as from pieces of material containing only enough stock for a single sole.
In several patents heretofore issued to me I have disclosed sole rounding machines in which means are provided for swinging the knife carrier upon which the knife is mounted to change the direction of the thrust or' pull on the knife as the knife travels around the heel and toe portions of the pattern in order to prevent the knife leaving the pattern at these points. In these machines, however, no means are provided for swinging the knife carrier to Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 191%. Renewed December 9, 1211. Serial in. 684,845.
changethe direction of the thrust or pull on the knife as the knife is traveling along the sides of the pattern, the direction of the thrust or pull on the knife at these points in the rounding operation being maintained substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the pattern. These machines have been found to operate satisfactorily to trim many styles of soles, Certain styles of soles, however, present sharp curves or angles at the junction of the forepart and shank and in trimming such soles upon the machines disclosed in my prior patents difficulty has been experienced in causing the knife to remain in contact with the pattern while passing around these points, the direction of the thrust or pull on the knife being such as to tend to cause the knife to leave the pattern.
The object of the present invention is to produce a sole rounding machine in which means are provided for moving the knife carrier during the relative movement of the knife and pattern to so change the direction of the thrust or pull on the knife as to cause the knife to remain in contact with the pattern while passing over the curves or angles at the junction of the forepart and shank as well as while passing around the heel and toe and at the same time to produce a machine of simple and compact construction and one which is certain and reliable in operation.
lVith this object in view a feature of my invention contemplates providing a sole rounding machine comprising a pattern and a knife carrier which are relatively movable to carry the knife around the pattern with a cam for controlling the position of the knife carrier during such relative movement having an independent rotary movement, that is, a rotary movement independent of the movement of the pattern or of the knife carrier which causes the knife to travel around the pattern.
Another feature of my invention contemplates providing a sole rounding machine comprising a pattern and a knife carrier relatively movable to carry the knife around the pattern with a cam for controlling the position of the knife carrier directly engaging the carrier. This feature of my invention, broadly considered, may be embodied in a construction in which the cam has a rotary movement independent of the movement of the pattern or knife carrier or it may be embodied in a construction in which the cam does not have such independent rotary movement.
In addition to the broad features of invention above referred to, my invention also consists in certain devices, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed, the advantages of which will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood 1 have illustrated a preferred form thereof as embodied in a sole rounding machine similar in many respects to the machines disclosed in my prior Letters Patent No. 528,128, dated October 23, 189 1, and No. 663,656, dated December 11, 1900, it being understood that the disclosure contained in the drawings is for the purpose of illustration only and that my invention is not limited to the particular machine shown, nor, except as defined in the claims, is it limited to any particular construction or arrangement of parts.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of so much of a sole rounding machine as is necessary to show the connection of my invention therewith; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of that portion of the machine illustrated in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view illustrating the rotary support upon which the knife carrier is mounted and in dotted lines the rotary cam which controls the position of the knife carrier during the rotation of the support; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional View of the portion of the machine illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner in which the cam which controls the position of the knife carrier is mounted; Fig. 6 is a detail plan view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 2 illustrating the arrangement of the gears through which motion is communicated to the-rotary cam; and Fig. 7 is a view in side elevation of the gears illustrated in Fig. 6.
1 indicate a stationary pattern which is supported upon a standard 2 which rests upon and is secured to a standard?) which in turn rests upon and is secured to the base or column of the frame of the machine.
4- indicates a rotary support or table, the hub of which is journaled upon the upper cylindrical end of the standard 3. The table 4 is provided near its periphery and on its under side with a series of beveled gear teeth 5 with which a beveled gear 6-meshes, the gear 6 being secured'to a driving shaft 7 and the construction being such that the rotary movement of the shaft 7 is communicated to the table 1. A knife carrier 8 is mountedupon the rotary'table 1 so as to be carried around the pattern 1 during the revolution of the table. A segmental plate 9 is pivotally mounted at 10 upon-the knife carrier and an arm 11 is secured to the segmental plate 9 upon the inner end of which the rounding knife 12 is mounted. The segmental plate 9 is provided with a series of gear teeth which mesh with a pinion 13 fast upon a short vertical shaft 14 journaled in the knife carrier '8. A coiled spring (not shown) acts upon the shaft 1 1 and pinion 13 and tends to move the segmental plate 9' in a direction to force the rounding knife against the pattern. To the upper end of the shaft 1.4". a hand lever 15 is secured by means of which the shaft 14 and pinion 13 may be rotated in a direction to withdraw the knife from the pattern. A pawl 16 is mounted upon thelever '15 in convenient position to be pressed into engagement with a series of fixed ratchet teeth 17 when it is desired to lock the rounding knife in retracted position. The knife carrier 8 is pivotally mounted upon the table t at 18 so as to be capable of a swinging or oscillating movement during the rotation of the table;
The construction so far described is substantially the same as that disclosed in my prior patents above referred to. In accordance with my present invention 1 have provided improved means for swinging or oscillating the knife carrier during the revolution of the table 1, these means being constructed and arranged toswing the knife carrier as the knife is passing around the heel and toe of the pattern and also as it is passing along the sides of the pattern in order to prevent the knife leaving the pattern at any point, The means for so swinging the knife carrier which I haveillustrated in the drawings consists of a cam 19 provided with a cam groove which receives a cam roll or stud 20 projecting downwardly from the knife carrier through a segmental slot in the table 4, the slot being concentric with the pivot 18 of the knife carrier. In the construction shown in the drawings the cam 19 is rotated independently of the table 1 and in the opposite direction making one complete revolution for each complete revolution of the table a, and the shape of the groove in the cam is such that during each revolution of the cam and table the knife carrier 8 is swung by theengagement of the stud or roll 20 with the cam groove to change the direction of the thrust or pull on the knife so as to cause the knife to remain in contact with the pattern throughout the entire rounding operation, the direction of the thrust or' pull on the knife being changed not only while theknifeis, passing around the heel and toe of the pattern as in the machines disclosed in my prior patents, but
-' also being changed asthe knife passes along the sides of. the pattern and over the points 1 and b at the junction of .the shank and forepart. .The cam 19 is mounted upon a sleeve 21 rotatablymounted upon the hub of the table 4:. The cam 19 and the table 1 thus rotate about the same axis, which axis passes through substantially the central point of the pattern, the cam and table being mounted concentrically with each other and substantially concentrically with the pattern. The lower end of the hub of the table 4 is provided with a gear 22 which meshes with a gear 23 supported upon a stationary bracket extending from the standard 3. The gear 23 meshes with a gear 24 also supported in a bracket extending from the standard 3 which gear in turn meshes with a gear- 25 upon the lower end of the sleeve 21. The arrangement of the gears is such that the sleeve 21 and the cam 19 mounted thereon are rotated through a complete revolution during a complete revolution of the table 4 but in the opposite direction.
In order to adapt the machine for operation upon different sizes of soles, means are provided for ad usting the cam 19 upon the sleeve 21. To this end the cam is provided with guideways which engage guides 26 formed on the sleeve 21 and with an elongated slot through which the sleeve 21 extends. As a means for adjusting the cam and for holding it in adjusted position, a hand lever 27 is provided pivotally mounted upon a plate or projection 28 extending from the sleeve 21 and the inner end of the lever is connected by means of a link 29 to a projection 30 from the cam 19. A series of holes 31 are formed in the plate or projection 28 into one of which a locking pin carried by the lever 27 drops when the lever is moved to adjust the cam and locks the cam in adjusted position.
It will be seen that the machine above described as the preferred embodiment of my invention contains a comparatively small number of operating parts and that these parts are arranged in a simple and compact manner. In operation the machine can be run at a high rate of speed without causing the knife to leave the pattern at any point, soles presenting sharp curves or angles at the junction of the shank and forepart can be trimmed to the exact shape of the pattern and the machine can be adjusted for operation upon soles differing widely in size.
Having thus indicated the nature and scope of my invention, and having specifically described a machine embodying a preferred form thereof, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A sole rounding machine, having, in combination, a pattern and a knife carrier relatively movable to carry the knife around the pattern, and a cam directly engaging the knife carrier substantially concentric with the pattern having an independent r0- combination, a pattern, a support, means for rotating one of said parts in one direction,
