GAS-LIBERATING HEADER FOR STEAM-CONDENSING COILS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 18, 1909. Serial No. 473,013.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. Pxnanrsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leavenworth, in the county of Leavenworth and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Liberating Headers for Steam-Condensin Coils, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to steam condensing coils and more especially to gas-liberating headers for such coils, and my object is to produce a header equipped with a valve adapted to open under a pressure in the header, greater than atmospheric pressure, and close as the pressure falls to that of the atmosphere.
A further object. is to produce a header embodying a series of chambers each provided with a gas-liberating passage con trolled by a valve and so connected by the pipes of the coil that the gas arising from the steam circulated throu h the coil, shall have as many opportunities toescape as there are chambers, so that the ice eventually produced, shall be free from the vegetable taste and odor ordinarily perceptible in ice made from water from which the vegetable gases have not been withdrawn.
A still further object is to produce a header for circulating coils, of simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which,
'Figure 1, represents a coil equipped with a single header shown in central vertical section. Fig. 2, is an inner face view of the header. Fig. 3, is a central vertical section of one of the valves.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates a header provided by preference with a pair of supporting legs 2 and divided by horizontal partitions 3 into a plurality of superposed chambers 4, 5 and 6, the upper chamber 4 having a tubular portion 7 extending through the end, and forming a passage 8. It is also provided in its upper side with a passage 9 and with a pair of threaded openin s 10 and 11 in the vertical plane of and below passage 8. Chamber 5 is likewise provided with a pair of threaded openings 12 and 13 in the vertical plane of and below threaded openings 10 and 11 and with a passage 14 extending obliquely upward and outward from its upper end. Chamber 6 is also provided with a pair of threaded openings 15 and 16 in the vertical plane of the other threaded openings mentioned, and with a passage 17 extending obliquely upward and outward from its upper end.
A series of valves 18, 19 and 20 control passages 9, 14 and 17 respectively, each of said valves consisting of an externally threaded tubular casing or plug 21 provided with an enlargement or head 22, having one or more passages 23 communicating with the interior of the casing. The lower or inner end of the casing is provided with a valveseat opening 24, and outward of or above the enlargement the casing is provided with a perforated diaphragm 25.
26 is a screw-cap closing the outer end of the casing and provided centrally with a socket 27 receiving the outer or upper end of an expansion spring 28 seated at its opposite end in a socket 29 in the outer end of the valve-plug 30 and holding said valveplug normally upon and closing valve-seat opening 24, the valve-plug being of less diameter than the chamber of the casing and fitting slidingly at its upper or outer end in the perforated diaphragm.
31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37 and 38 indicate pipes of the steam coil, the first-named pipe being mounted in passage 8, the second being screwed into threaded opening 10, the third into threaded opening 11, the fourth into threaded opening 12, the fifth into threaded opening 13, the sixth into threaded opening 15, the seventh into threaded opening 16, the eighth extending under the body of the header through the space between the legs 2. The opposite ends of pipes 31 and 32, 33 and 34, 35 and 36, and 37 and 38 are connected together preferably by similar couplings 39, the coupling for pipes 37 and 38 being omitted.
In practice, steam circulates in the direction indicated by the arrows, the steam being preferably produced from distilled water. In the distillation process, vegetable gases Will be released and will rise to the top of chambers 4, 5 and 6 and impose pressure upon valve plugs 30 sufiicient to unseat the same and thus permit such gas to enter the chamber of the valve-casing and escape through passages 23 to the atmosphere, this action taking place, of course, if the pressure Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
of the gases exceeds that of the atmosphere, the sprlng 28 belng of such power as to reseat the Valve-plugs the instant the pressure of such gases falls below that of the atmosphere in order to prevent air entering the said chambers 4L, '5 and 6. By the time the steam completes its travel through the coil it is condensed into water, which passes through pipe 38 to the freezing apparatus where, because freed of the objectionable vegetable gases, it is frozen into solid cakes of "clear ice Without a white core in the lower central part of the cake, which core is invariably found in cakes produced from water impregnated with the vegetable gases referred to. Such core is not only representative of a loss of good ice but contaminates water into which it is placed to such an extent that it is perceptible to the taste.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a gas-liberating header for steam-condensing coils embodying the desirable features enumerated and which obviously is susceptible of modifica tion in form, proportion, detail construction and organization without departing from th'e'essential spirit and scope or sacrificing any of the advantages of the appended claims.

In a steam condensing coil, a header provided with a series of superposed chainbers and with gas-escape passages communica'ti11g 'wit'h the upper ends of said chambers, the said passages of all of the chambers below the topmost one extending diagonally outward to one side of the overlying chambers, hollow externally-threaded casings screwed into said passages and provided at their outer ends with enlargements having radiating passages communicating at their inner ends with the interior of said casings; said caslngs also having Valve seats at the lower or inner ends and perforated d1aciprocatory valves fitting in said diaphragms,
caps secured upon the upper or outer ends of v the casings, and springs arranged in the easings and bearing at their opposite ends against said caps and the valves and normally holding the latter upon said Valve seats to prevent the escape of gas, at less than a predetermined pressure, from the upper ends of said chambers.
2. In a steam condensing coil, a header provided with a series of superposed chambers and with gas-escape passages communicating with the iipper ends of said chambers, the said passages of all of the chambers below the topmost one extending diagonally outward to one side of the overlying chambers, hollow externally threaded casings screwed into said passages and provided at their outer ends with enlargements having radiating passages communicating at their inner ends with the interior of said casings; said casings also having valve-seats at the lower or inner ends and perforated diaphragms outward of said enlargements, re-
ciprocatory valves fitting in said di'aphragms, caps secured upon the upper or outer ends of the casings, and springs arranged in the easings and bearing at their opposite ends against said caps and the valves and normally holding the latter upon said valve seats to prevent the escape of gas, at less than a predetermined pressure, from the upper ends of said chambers, in combination with a pair of pipes for and connected to each of said chambers in different horizontal planes, and couplings connecting the opposite ends of the upper pipe of one chamber with the lower pipe of the adjacent superposed chamber.
