ADJUSTABLE DOUBLE SQUARE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 191.0.
Application filed August 5, 1907. Serial No. 387,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FIELD- HOUSE, of Swissvale, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Double Square, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved square; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the construction of the slotted end of the blades by which the blades are adjusted and are held in their adjusted position on the base of the square.
My invention is particularly designed for use in squaring or lining the cores used in making twyers or similar castings so as to bring them exactly concentric with the mold containing the core when the twyers are cast.
The invention consists in providing a base with adjustable blades, the faces of the blades being disposed atright angles to one another and the base being constructed so as to partly encircle the object which is being lined up or squared to position.
In the drawings, 2 represents the base which is provided with ears or lugs 3 on its upper face to which the blades 4 and 5 are secured by means of the bolts 6 and thumb nuts 7.
The lower end of each of the blades 4 and 5 is provided with a slotted opening 8 through which the bolt 6 extends, this slot being provided to permit of the blades being adjusted inwardly and outwardly.
In using my improved square, the article to be squared is placed upon a surface plate or other plane surface and the base 2 of this square is placed in position on the surface plate so as to bring the inner edges of the blades 4: and 5 in contact with the article on this plate. The faces or edges of the blades are then adjusted inwardly or outwardly and are also inclined in planes at right angles to each other as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, so as to bring the blades of the square into engagement with the article being squared.
The article being squared is then removed from the place at which it is formed and is then placed within the mold in which it is to be used in making the casting. The core is centered in this mold and the square is then placed in position on the surface plate or plane surface on which the core rests and the core is lined up so as to again bring its surface into contact with each of the inner faces or edges of the blades 4 and 5. In this way the core is placed in the mold in a central position and is adjusted into exactly the same position with relation to the square blades as it had in the first operation.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. The articles being squared can be lined or lifted up in planes at right angles to one another in one operation. The apparatus is simple and can be easily and quickly adjusted.
Modifications in the construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from my invention.
I claim 1. A double square comprising a base having a plurality of blades adjustably mounted on one face thereof, the blades being adjustable toward and away from each other in planes perpendicular to the base and at right angles to each other and means for securing the blades in their adjusted positions; substantially as described.
2. A double square comprising a base having a pair of blades adjustably mounted thereon adjacent to the ends thereof, the blades being adjustable toward and away from each other in planes perpendicular to the base and at right angles to each other, and means for securing the blades in their adjusted positions, the inner edge of the base being curved; substantially as described.
3. A double square comprising a quadrantal base having a curved inner edge, a pair of blades having slotted lower ends mounted on the base adjacent to the ends thereof and bolt-securing means for holding the lower ends of the blades on the base, the blades being arranged to be adjusted toward and away from a common axis in planes perpendicular to the base and at right angles to each other; substantially as described.
4. A double square comprising a quadgles to each other; substantially as derantal base, a pair of blades pivotally scribed. 10 mounted thereon, the lower ends of said In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set blades being slotted, and means extending my hand. 5 5 through the slots for securing the blades in GEO. W. FIELDHOUSE. 5 their adjusted position, the blades being ar- Witnesses:
ranged to be adjusted on the base in planes FRANK A. POWER, perpendicular to the base and at right an- G. E. F. GRAY.
