To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER P. CATALANO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawton Station, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein- Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to check rein holders, of that type which embody means whereby the checking and unchecking operation may be accomplished without leaving the vehicle, and my object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device comprising a novel construction and a novel and. convenient manner of operation.

lVith this in view my invention resides in the following construction, arrangement and operation, reference being made in this description, to the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Figure 1 is a view partly in section and mostly in elevation. Fig. 2 is a central vertical-longitudinal section through the entire device. Fig. 3 is a plan view of an intermediate portion of one of the driving reins, and, Fig. at is a plan view of the check hook removed.

In accordance with my ideas I provide a check frame 2 which comprises an upper arch member 2 curved loops A at the ends thereof to receive the driving reins, and a lower central U-shaped piece 2', said frame, as a whole, being attachable to a back pad by means of a breast piece 1 curved along the lower portion of the frame and connecting the loops A and U-shaped piece 2 It will thus be seen that the driving reins, which extend through the end loops A may be readily shifted into the U-shaped piece 2*, such reins being, in accordance with my in vention, provided with a series of metallic loops 13 connected by bands 14, as shown in Fig. 3, wherein the rein is indicated by numerals 12.

Extending forwardly from the base of the U-shaped frame piece 2', is an elongated guide piece 3, U-shaped in cross section and having inturned upper longitudinal edges 3, and forming a runway in which is slidably disposed the check piece 4, the forward hook-end 8 of which engages the aperture 16 in the rear end of the check rein 9. Near its rear upwardly curved end 15 provided with a forwardly projecting nose 10 and forming the rein hook, the check piece 4 has an aperture 17 which, when the parts are in the checked position, alines with an aperture in the guide piece 3, and receives the latch piece 6 of the spring latch 6, to lock the same in check. The latch 6 is secured at its forward end to the base of the guide piece 3 and has a rear upwardly curved end 5 provided with a forked extremity 11. adapted to straddle the rein hook 1.5. Thus when it is desired to uncheck, one of the driving reins 12 is shifted from its loop A into the U-shaped frame piece 2" to cause one of its loops 13 to engage over the hookl5of the cheek piece at. Pressure is then applied with the rein, downwardly upon the forked end 11 of the latch 6 whereby to withdraw its latch piece 6 from the aperture 17 of the check piece and the latter is then free to slide forwardly in the guide 3. It will be noted however, that the check piece being engaged by the rein loop 13 is always under control by the operator and may be drawn rearwardly to the checked position at any time, through this means.

I claim:

1. In a check rein holder, the combination of a movable check piece engaging the check rein and provided with a rein hook, a depressibly releasable spring latch engagin said check piece in the check position an having a portion thereof straddling the rein hook, and a driving rein having an intermediate loop to engage said rein hook and bear upon the adjacent latch ortion.

2. In a check rein holder, t e combination of a frame comprising side rein loops, a central depending portion communicating with said rem loops, and a guide piece extending from the lower end of said depending portion, a check piece movable in said guide and engaging the check rein and provided with a rein hook upstanding within said depending frame portion, a depressibly releasable spring latch engaging said check piece in the check position and having a portion thereof contiguous to the check piece below its upper end, and driving reins movable through said frame loops and into said depending portion and having intermediate loops to engage said rein hook and bear upon the contiguous latch portion whereby to release the latch and check piece. 10
