SLED-BRAKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 1, 1910.
Application filed January 3, 1910. Serial No. 535,990.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELwooD IIoLmNes- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Kootenai and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sled Brakes, of which the followingis a specification.
lghis invention pertains to brakes for a s e The application of the apparatus as shown in the drawings is to a bob-sled, however the same may be used upon any kind of a sled.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a means forchecking the speed of a sled upon a down grade, especially where the sled is loaded to such an extent that it is diflicult for the horses attached thereto to maintain a requisite limited speed.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a top plan view of one bob of a bob-sled with the apparatus attached, Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3, isa longitudinal section of a broken away portion of one of the runners together with the brake pin extending through an opening in the same.
Openings 10 are made through the sled runners 11 from top to bottom, metal linings 12 being provided on both sides thereof. Through the openings 10 are inserted the brake pins 13, set at a slight angle. Connected with the upper ends of the brake pins 13 are levers 14, fulcrumed at the pins 15 by which pins also the same are connected to the standards 16 rigidly secured to the runners 11. Secured to the top of the levers 14 are rods 17 which in turn are linked to the bolt 18; the bolt 18 is encircled with a coil spring between the bolster 20 and the collar 21, the collar 21 being rigidly secured to the bolt 18. A cross lever 22 is secured to the bolster 20 as at 23 and fulcrumed as at 24, the same being provided with an opening 25 through which the bolt 18 passes. The end 26 of the lever 22 is connected with the cable 27. To the bolster 20 of the sled is secured a pulley 28 over which the cable 27 passes. The normal position of the brake pin 13 is as shown in Fig. 2, the same being held in that position by the coil spring 19 encircling the bolt 18 pressing against the collar 19, which in turn bears against the When it is desired to set the brakes, it is I only necessary for the operator to pull on the cable 27 operating over the pulley 18 which draws the lever 22 backward, carrying backward with it the bolt 18, the rods 17 and the tops 31 of the levers 14, thereby forcing the brakes 13 downward below the under surface of the runners 11 and bringing the same in contact with the snow, ice or earth beneath. The collar 32 upon the bolt 18 is loose upon the same and the bolt 18 passes loosely through the bolster 20, thereby permitting the bolt 18 to be thrown backward through the bolster 20, when the parts are drawn backward in the setting of the brakes and the coil spring 19 will return the parts to the position shown in Fig. 2, as soon as the drawing force upon the cable 27 is released.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a sled brake, pins extending downward at an angle through openings through the sled runners from top to bottom, the said pins connected with levers at their upper ends fulcrumed to standards secured to the sled runners, the said levers adapted to raise and lower the brake pins by means of rods connected therewith reaching backward and cooperating with a cross lever fulcrumed at a position on the body of the sled, held in normal position by a coil spring and encirclinga rod passing through the said lever and the bolster of the sled and operated by means of a cable working over a pulley secured to the sled, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELWOOD I-IOLLINGSWORTI-I.
