ATTACHMENT FOR HARVESTERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'ris O. CLARK, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Liberal, in the county of Seward, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to agricultural implements and has special reference to an attachment for row binders and the like, the attachment being in the form of a novel arrangement of rotatable disk sickles.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment of this character which will obviate the difficulties incident both to the stationary form of knife and the complications necessary to drive the ordinary rotary disk sickle.
Another' object of the invention is to provide an improved form of support and arrangement of bearings for disk sickles.
IVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of a disk sickle arranged in an improved bearing adapted to be attached to a row binder.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of arrangement and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and z-Figure 1 is a plan view of a row binder showing one forni of the device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail front view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front View of a modified form of bracket the bearing cap being removed and certain of the parts being shown in section the more clearly to bring out the construction. Fig. l is a side elevation of this form of bracket with the knife shown thereon. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bracket.
In the form of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 there is provided a bracket which is substantially U-shaped in plan as indicated at 10 and this bracket is intended to be secured to a row binder 11 by means of suitable bolts 12.
In the form of the device shown in Figs. 3, 4: and 5 the bracket is T-shaped in plan as indicated at 13. In the head of the T Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led May 28, 1909.
Patented Nov. 1,' 1910.
serial No. 498,998.
there is provided a slot 11 adapted to receive suitable bolts for the purpose of attaching the bracket to the binder.
In the irst'form there are provided at the ends of the U arms a pair of bearings which, by reason of this construction, are held at the proper distance from each other while in the last mentioned forni the brackets may be adjusted to or from each other by means of the slots let and the attaching bolts. Both of these forms of bracket are provided with bearings comprising a body portion 15 and a cap 1G both the body am cap being suitably babbitted as at 17. This body and cap are secured together in the usual manner by bolts 18. Through the bearing thus formed extends a disk cutter shaft 19 upon the upper end of which is secured a diskcutter 20, the disk cutter being here shown as held from rotation on the shaft by means of a taper pin 21. The lower end of the shaft 19 is reduced as at 20 and this reduced portion is provided with suitable threads 21. A collar 22 is held upon the lower end of this shaft against the shoulder formed between the body of the shaft and the reduced portion and this collar is held in position by means of a suitable nut Q3 screwed on the threaded end of the shaft. The shaft 19 is provided with an oil passage 24, having its end opening on the lower end of the shaft. Screwed upon the lower extremity of the threaded portion 20 is a compression grease cup 25. By means of this construction when the stalks of grain are caught between the guides 2G of the row binder the are directed into the lapping portions of the cutter disks 20 and strike in the acute angle formed between the two disks. The friction set up by the passage of the stalk along the disks causes them to rotate and by reason of the peculiar manner of carrying the disks in the bearings the disk shafts are kept constantly well lubricated and will thus rotate readily and cause the stalks to be easily and rapidly severed.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is z- 1. The combination with a harvester frame, a bracket adapted to rest on one of the members of the frame, means for attaching the bracket to the frame, a bearing formed on said bracket, a shaft carried in said bearing and extending above and below the ends of the bearing, a cutter' disk provided with a hub fixed on the upper end of the shaft, the under face of the hub vresting directly on the upper end of the bearing, the lower end of said shaft being reduced from the lower end of the bearing downward and provided with threads, a washer carried on the reduced end and bearing against the lower end of the bearing and a nut on said lower end to hold said washer in position, said threaded lower end extending below said nut to form grease cup attaching means.
2. In combination with a harvester frame; a bracket provided with a flat base substantially of Tshape and adapted to rest on one of the members of the frame, the head ofthe T having an elongated bolt receiving` slot formed therethrough whereby the bracket may be adjustably attached to the frame, a
' bearing carried at the end of the stem of the T and extending vertically up fromy the flat base, a vertical Web between the upsta'nding portion of the bearing and the stem of the T, a shaft carried in said bearing and extending above and below the respective ends of the bearing, a cutter disk provided with a hub fixed on the upper end of the shaft, the under face of the hub resting directly on the upper end of the bearing, the lower end of said shaft being reduced from the lower end of the bearing downward and provided with threads, a washer carried on the reduced end and bearing against the lower end of the bearing, and a nut on said lower end to hold said washer in position, said threaded lower end extending below saidy nut to form grease cup attaching means.
In testimony whereof, I aiix my signa- 4o ture, in presence of two witnesses.
