To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, AnoHmALnrLDoUG- LASS, Jr., and DANIEL FRANKLIN 'DoUoLAss,
citizens of the United States, residing at hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to cotton choppers and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character having a revolving wheel provided with knives for thinning out rows of cotton, and a hollow revolving cylindrical member adapted to protect the cotton at certain points between which the cotton has been thinned out.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a top plan view of a cotton chopper constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken through the revolving wheel. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the lever, which adjusts the depth of the Cultivators. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the revolving cylindrical members.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a frame, which is provided with a slot 2, in which slot is inserted a revolving wheel 3. The lower portion of the wheel 3 engages the ground as it is drawn thereover. The wheel 3 is provided with a plurality of recesses, in which recesses are inserted cylindrical members 4,.which revolve within the wheel. On one side of the frame is provided a stationary member 5, which is provided with cogs, and which engage the inner end of the revolving members 4, which members are also provided with gearing 6, which intermeshes with the gearing on the stationary member 5. Thus it will be seen that as the wheel revolves, the inner ends of the cylindrical members 4 will revolve and stop when the wheel 3 stops.
The revolving members 4 are provided with teeth 7, which stir the ground when the cotton chopper is in operation. The wheel 3 is. provided with a plurality of slots 8, in which are inserted knives 9. The knives 9 are designed to chop the cotton while the cylindrical members 4, being hollow, protect the cotton, as willbe readily understood. When the cylindrical members 4 are brought into engagement with the ground, it will be seen that the teeth 7 serve to cultivate the cotton, which is shielded from the chop ers, and thus promote its growth. It wil also be seen that after use of this cotton chopper the cotton will be a uniform distance apart in each row.
The cylindrical members 4 are held in engagement with the wheel 3 by means of a screw or other suitable member 10, which serves as a pivot on which said cylindrical members revolve.
On one side of the frame 1 is a cultivator 11, which extends about half the length of the frame, and the forward portion 12 of which passes entirely throu h said frame. The beam 11 is held against isplacement by a support 11*, which is connected with the frame of the cotton chopper. The handles 13 are supported by a U-shaped metallic support 14, which connects with the rear of the frame, and each handle is provided with upper and lower nuts 15 and 16, which not only hold said handles in position rigidly, but which also enable the handles to be raised or lowered, as will be readily understood. The frame 1 is provided with a lever 17, which is provided with an angular portion 18 adapted to force the cultivator 11 downward when the lever 17 is swung rearwardly.
The beam of the cultivator 11 is resilient so as to permit the same to be pressed downwardly in response to the action of the lever. As shown in the accompanying drawings, only one cultivator is employed for the reason that the wheel 3 travels in the center of the cotton row and therefore the one cultivator passes between all the rows.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a cotton chopper, a revolving wheel, knives carried by said wheel, and a hollow cylindrical member ada ted to revolve within said wheel for shielding portions of the cotton to be chopped.
