In practice, the shaft 34 is continuously driven byreason of the gear connections between it and the shaft of the worm conveyer, the latter is driven uniformly and at a low rate of speed and acts to automatically and continuously force the ashes from the I ash pits through the trough and discharge the ashes at the discharge end of the trough, hence, keeping the ash pits clear at all times.
In Fig. 1, I show a portion of an endless conveyer 36 so disposed that the ashes discharging from the trough, fall into the pockets on the upper lid of said conveyer 36, the latter servmg to elevate the ashes to the point where they are loaded into vehicles or accumulated for ultimate disposition.
The door 5 and the chute formed on the front side of the furnace by the inclined plate '3 afl'ord access to the conveyer and enable the stoker to dispose of grate cleanings by dropping them through the door 5 and causing them to be carried off by the conveyer. 7
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is
1. A furnace including an ash pit, relatively inclined plates arranged in said pit,
and a trough connecting the adjacent edges of said plates to said trough being made up of a series of duplicate sections and heads interposed between the sections, said heads and sections being formed with offset projections designed to be alined when the parts are assembled, and rods passed through the alined projections of the sections and heads to secure the partsftogether.
2. A furnace including an ash pit, rela tively inclined plates arranged in said pit, a trou h connecting the adgacent edges of said p ates to said trough being made up of a series of duplicate sections and heads interposed between the sections, said heads and sections being formed with oflset projections designed to be alined when the parts are assembled, rods passed through the alined projections of the sections and heads to secure the parts together, each of said heads including a central bearing and being formed beyond the bearing with an opening corresponding in sectional area to and designed to aline with the trough opening, a trunnion rotatably mounted in each bearing, a conveyer made up. of a series of sections including a rectangular shaft, the
shaft terminals of the respective sections being seated in endwise alinement in openings formed in the trunnion, and means engaging the bearings and trunnions and ada ted for removable connection with the sha t terminals.
