To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROY L. KENYON, a

' citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Crosse, in the county-of La 'Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Boat-Canopy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention is an improvement in boat canopies or tops and has in view a canopy supported by stanchions or bows from the deck or coaming, and provided with an end extension foldable to the body of the canopy and arranged over one end of the cockpit to permit ease of entry and exit to and from the boat.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.

Figure l is a perspective view of the stern end of a launch having my improved canopy applied thereto; and Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, showing the end extension of the canopy thrown up or folded, as when entering or leaving the boat.

For the purpose of illustrating the nature and application of my improvements, I have shown a small motor boat having a cockpit 5, from which extends above the deck the customary coaming 6. To this coaming at suitable intervals are attached eyes 7, with the opening therein vertically arranged, and adjacent to each eye is secured to the deck of the boat, a foot 9 having an eye 10, the opening of which is arranged at right-angles to the opening in the eye 7. In the sets of fasteners constituted by the eyes 7 and 10, are secured the lower ends of stanchions or bows 11, forming the frame of the canopy. For this purpose the end portion of each stanchion is outwardly turned to pass through the eye 10 of the foot 9. One end of the canopy is provided with an extension which is arranged over one end portion of the cockpit, preferably the stern, as shown in Fig. 1. The frame of this extension is made up of a bow 12, pivotally supported at its lower ends on ears 13 carried by the adjacent stanchions, and braces 14: pivotally connected to the adjacent stanchlons and the arms of the how 12 at their upper portions, and constructed of two sections pivoted together as indicated at 15. The canopy is braced at this end of the boat by straps 16, which extend from the upper portion of the adjacent stanchions 11 to points at the stern end of the coaming, where they are connected to keepers 17, the arrangement of these straps being much the same as in certain well-known classes of automobile tops.

The covering 18 of the canopy is made of any suitable material, such as canvas, leather or rubber, and is of such length between the bow 12 and adjacent stanchions 11 as to cover the stern end of the cockpit and be fully stretched out when the brace 14 is extended. The height of the covering of the extension diminishes in passing toward the bow 12, becoming flatter at this end, whereby the covering easily gathers in folds when the bow 12 is thrown back. With the canopy thus constructed, it is adapted to be packed in a small space for shipment or stowage and is easily applied to the boat, and by reason of the especial location of the folding extension, convenient entry and exit to and from the boat may be made; thus any one entering the boat will ordinarily step on the stern deck and then throw the folding extension inwardly to folded position, as shown in Fig. 2, at which time the stern end of the cockpit is uncovered, and the party may step directly thereinto or first step on the back seat,if such is provided, and then into the cockpit, without danger of knocking off his or her hat.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with a boat having a cockpit, a canopy over the boat, having supporting stanchions and provided with an end extension arranged over one end of the cockpit, said extension having a bow pivotally supported at the ends of its arms and inclining upwardly and outwardly, adapting the extension to be folded inwardly to uncover the cockpit, and straps extending from the upper portions of the stanchions adjacent to the bow and detachably connected to the boat at points outwardly of said stanchions, whereby the folding and extending of the said extension unafiects the remaining portion of the canopy.

2.
