cancer.
To all whom it may concern: p r Be it known that I, ROBERT L. FRINK, of Belle Vernon, Fayette county, Pennsylvania, .have invented ,a new and useful Ba'it for Dru-wing Glass, 'of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the, accom anying drawing,-- forming part of this s ec1fication, in which the figure is a. sectiona -side elevation show- 1o ing the preferred form of my improved bait. nthe drawing, of glass cylinders, a neck' and cap are ordinarily formed, the cap beof substantially the diameter of the cylin er to drawn. In such -operation a blow-pip'e has been lowered intothe glass bath, this being then drawn up to form the -=neck-aud cap, air being' admitted in the, properamounts tovfirst formfthe neck and then swell out the size to the diameter de- In the use of'ordinary blow-pipes it [was found that the glass woi'ildchoke up the lower end of the air-hole through the pipe and .thus prevent proper action. It; was also :found that the lower end of the zb'pipe would :chill during the drawing up of the cylinder, and consequently the glass would crack and become detached fro'mthe ipe',. It was also found that the glass was able to pullofi from the end of the pipe even wherethe heat was retained to some ekte'nt, by reason of the considerable weight of the long cylinder being drawn.
' My mvention overcomes these difiiculties and rovides a bait or blow pipe havlng.
sufiicient metal at the lowerportion to avoi a too rapid cooling.
, The invention further consists in enlarging thehole in the lower art ofthe blow pipe,'and further in provi ing an outwardly 40. projecting lip 'at its lower end which aids greatly preventing breaking or pulling ofloftheneck,
In the drawing, 2 represents a blow-pipe having its lower portion enlargedand provided with ickened walls as shown at 3. At the lower edge'of these walls they are ,provided with an outwardly projecting-lip 4, and the vair-inletholeh 1s enlarged n ts l lower portion as shown at 6. The shape of the lowerend of the pipe, as shown, is also of -advantage, first, 1n providing the lip, thenin providing 'a'slow ta' er througlli the part7, and then ta ering own quic y to the'normal size of, t e pipe.

of the blow-pipe is especially important in A mamas-slid? 1 Pattern the glassin'the ordinary mannergpreferably up to about the level a' a. The pipe is then llfted slowly to form the neck and theair is then increased to'swell out the'neck ,into the 1 cap, as-shown. The drawing then proceeds in the ordinaryinanner, and during" the drawing operation the 1i) 4 aids'in holding the glass to the bait while the added metal assists in retaining the heat. When the'bait is lowered into the bath the enlarged-hole at the lower end prevents clogging and choking by reason of the entrance of. glass into the hole. As the neck is drawn up, theglass is drawn out'of-the central part of the enlarged hole so that the layer of glass on theinside of the hole will still leave an entrance hole into the cylinder, at least as large as the normal diameter of the'hole in the' blow-pipe. In
this connection, it is impo'rtant'to provide a hole 8 1n the's'lde of 'the blow-pipehaving a controlling cock 9. .This cock is closed during' the formation of the neck and cap, and is opened during the drawing of the cylinder. to" allow exit of air. found very important in preventin varia- .tions" in pressure within the tube an conseinder.
This air "nozzle is .80
,. quent fluctuations inthe diameter of {the cyl-- The enlarging of the hole at the lower end connection with-the exit hole,- since these two featuresncoactin making the c linder more uniform throughout its length, Ty 'prov viding free circulation and avoiding occasional constrictions of the passage by clog aging up the mouth withv the glass.
The advantaes of my invention result from reducing iability to breaking or pull-f ing ofl? of thegglass'- from the bait, and also from making the cylinder more uniform in size and wall thickness. 7 '7 ,Variat-ions may be-made in'the form-and arrangement of the pipe, as well as its material without depart-mgfrom my invention.
I claim 1. In lass-drawing ap aratus, a. blow pipe havln' its-lower baitorming end pors tion provi ed with a fixed thickened wall enlargement to give a sufficient mass or metal to revent rapid coolin the extreme lower end having an outwar. y-- turned ad hesion lip, and the enlargement extending above said l'ip, substantially as described.
2. In lass-drawin' cap ara-tus, -a blow pipe having its lower aitorming end portion provided with a fixed thickened wall enla'rlgement to give a suflicient mass of .meta
to prevent'rapid cooling, and having the lower end of its passage formed with an enlargement of increasin diameter to. the
' orifice thereof, substantial y as described.
3.;In glass-drawing a paratus, a blowpi e havm its lower en (fortion radually en arg'ed dhwnwardly-an its walls thick- 10'- ened, the lowerportion of the passage through said enlar ed portion being also enlarge of said passage, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
