STATES PATENT OFFICE;A
CHARLES M. LEECH, 'OF LIMA, OHIO.
G'AsmifrelNE.
To all whom 'it concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M.- Lnacin' citizenof the .United States, residing at Lima, in the countyV of Allen and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas -j Engines, the following is'ja specification.
Myinvention relates to lgas engines' of that class described and claimed in my -Patent Number 914,292, embodying self-contained cylinder, and piston oiling and coolr of which 'ing means, the latter of which is comprisedof a-novel circulation of air and actuates the former.
My presentA invention aims to provide an -improvement in the air circulation, whereby' the c linder and'piston may be uniformly coole and the resulting warmed air em? lployed to operate the oil and fuel feeds. Myinventon furtherjaims to provide a 'simplified structure, which will not therefore become often out of order, and which emb'odiesa novel and useful throttle valve.
Further objects and 4advantages of my invent-ion will appear in the course of the fol- 'v lowingdescriptionbf the construction and 7 is a side elevation of the throttle valve,A
voperation thereof; in which reference is .made to the accompanlying drawings, form.
i a part of this speci cation, and in which,
` igure 1 `is alcentral vertical sectional view through my improvederigine, the .form of which is similar to that shown in my patent above referred t. Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation and partial verticalV section thereof, looking at. right angles to Fig.' 1. Fi .3 is acont-ral vertical sectionalview of a s ortened embodiment of my invention, in i which the" lower guide, shown in Fig. 1, is done awa with, the operation however, remaining t e same. Fig. 4 is aside elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a similar view to`Fi`g. 3,.
illustrating aslightly modified form. F g. 6 is a plan'view of the piston, removed. Fig.
and, Fig.;8 is across s ection'takenv there'- througli. Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the form of v'engine shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1Q is a detail view, partly in' section, showing the cam and connecting rod. l Y

casting 13.- According tothe f orm shown 'in Fig. 1, similar to the form yshown in my patent, a casing 17, of semi-circular shape,
leading from the lower central point ofA `is secured upon casting 137 Aand forms a'f ypart of the crank case, and supports etlie ower "hanged edge 18 of casing 1, by its circular flan cylinder 20. t ereo'f, while according to the form shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the lower edge of the casing 1, is secured directly upon the casting 13, 'thus doing away' with castiiig 17, and reducing the length of theengine.
' In Fig. 1, crank-casecastings v13 and`17,
and in' 3 and-5, casting 13 and the llower edge of ca sin 1, are provided in their abutting face with recessesto form bearings 21 for t e power shaft 22 having its crank 23 within the case 12.
The 'piston comprises a hollow cylindrical .body 24, of a relative size to fit within the explosion chamber 3, and has a circular 19,l surrounding `the centrall flange 25,"forming a Ipiston and located .Within the compression chamber 2. Piston 24 and its Harige 25 are also providedA with suitable packing" rings 26, and said piston 24' has a head 27, which' receives the pact of the exploded charge within the exp'losion chamber 3, and isfurther provided y y.
with a transverse pin 28 to'which the inner end of itman 29 is foupled, tlie outer iend of whic pitman iscoup ed upon the crankV 423 of sha 22 Y. 4
According tothe form shown in Figs.' .i1

before stated, that the vlower edgeof ,casing 1 rests directly upon the crank case casting 13, and doin away with the piston extenjsion 30, and t e chamber 34 below 'piston'25.-
The air pipe 37 in this form, has its valved connections 39 and 40 communicating-ret-ively with compression .chamber 2 a ve piston 25, and'with crank case 12 be' .low saidpiston. Openings 36 through the casing shoulder, are thus dispensed with, air being taken in from jacket 7 throu h- 39,
o and through 40to crank case from w ere it `isdischargedi'iitochaiinel 33 and outlet 43.
The formvshown in Fig. 5, is also similar to the `forms just-described, especially Fi 3j and 4,--from which it diers only by t 4e closing of the lower end of wall channel 33.z
case I2. The lower end of pit-man 29` and crank' 2 3A lubricate themselves by passing through the oil collected in'- crank case 12 and also splsh the same upon the cylinder 20.' 4The oil splashed into pipes-4-6 andl 46, to ether with the air in crank-case 12 which wi 'lbe laden with small particles of oil, is forced upwardly through-said pipes 46 and 46 and'iii pipe 46 is sprayed against lcylinder 24 throii'gh'opening 46, while in pipe 46. itis vmixed with the oil dropping from can 471.a nd then sprayed against pistonj24 as above described.. 'A y i In accordance with .my resent invention, I provide a pipe 4 8 whicli .leads from one of the air and oil pipes 46, shown in Figs.
2 and 4, a'nd. in the present showing, the pipe 46 to which o'il cup 47 is connected, to t ie tion of the saine wil `be: collected in .crank exhaust pipe 49 leading from exhaust v leading vertically rt 32, said air and oil pipe 46 being provided with a check or regulating valve 5() immediately above the connection thereto of pipe 48.
Check valves may also bottom of air pipes 46 (see Fig. 2) to prevent air passing back into crank case. Thus for instance the air in chamber 2, Fig. 3 is, on the .up stroke, and 48,' and by means of-the latter, into the exhaust i e 49 to thoroughly clean out the latterofpbp viously been thrown' therein from the explosion chamber. Also inl ac cordgmcewith my resent invention, I provide a pipe 51 parallel4 alongsidecasing 1, to the upper end of whclrpipe 5l -is secured a carbureter comprising a casing 52, in .which is mounted a central fuel receptacle 53, separated into upper and lower compartments by a eensV trally aperturedweb 54, thelower compart- .ment .of which has an inlet'port 55, leading through casing -5 2, Awhich port is connecte by means (not shown); to a suitable fuel .tank containing fuel' under pressure, and is controlled by a-needle 4valve 56. The lower compartment ofreceptacle 53' contains a disk valve 57 seatedupwardly against the aperture'in web 54,-by a.spri1 1g 58,said valve havin astem 59, the lower end of which isguide in'said lower'compartment andthe upper end of which. projects through the aperture of web 54 and-.extendsupwardly into the upper compartment within the path of downward movement of a valve 6( se a'ted upwardly against the'upp'erreduced end'of receptacle 53, and having its stem` 61, project-ing upwardly through casing' .52 and controlled by a'spring 62, tendingto' hold' said valve against its seat, partment, as shown, angular vupper end or, in other words, 'sion chamber 3, by it'soutlet The upper com.- communicates with` the 31 of the wall-channel,
therewith. Thus a portion of the air which its exhaust and in et ports,
..55 I valve 60 downwardly has been compressed in the compression chamber passes upwardly through channei 33 after being. warmed by contact with piston. 24, passes upwardly through pipe 51, andas soon as the. iston descends, opening 'and reducing fessure in ex losion chamber 3, said 1n pipe 51 wi enter casing 52and press sion Vchamber. 3, through ports 64 and 31,
' carrying witht a portionof the fuel Iin thel valve 60 is opened,
uplper compartment of the fuel receptacle, W
ich is continuously supplied each time by the contactofsaid valve againstthe vupper end'oftha Astem vof valve 57, and the consequent .lowering of the latter,
Extending vertically and; upwardly from be provided at the forced through pipes 4GA urnt gases which have just pre-A from the outlet 43, and- Furthermore,
the inlet port of explo portl 64 allned.`
and enter the explo` the juncture of the explosion chamber inlet 31, carbureter outlet 64, and wall channel 33, and alined with the latter, is a scavenging pipe 65 which, at its angular extension. 66,
upper end, has an leading inwardly lthrough jacket 7 and casing l1, and commu; nicating with the upper portion of explosion chamber `3,
said pipe 65 having aback pressure check valve 67 therein, and permitting the entrance 'of air through from pipe 33 into 4the said chamber 3, as soon as exhaust port force out all burnt gases. 'It will be understood that exhaust port 32 is uncovered prior to the uncovering o'f inlet port 31. Air pipe 32 is uncovered, to thoroughly 48 assists'in discharging the -burnt gases by .delivering 'air into exhaust pi'pes 49.
Arranged within. the juncture of channel 33, pipe), and ports 31 and 64, is a throttle Valve V(38, having an 'outwardly extending shaft '(39 having a cran-k 70 upon its en(l.to establish communication between said chan.- nels and ports at the proper\time s.
It is to be understood that'valve (38 rotates'. backward and forward, just far enough to cover and uncoverepipes 65 'and 64. Valve 68 keepsY pipe-64 covered untilthe exhaust port 49 and inlet port 31 are opened, thusv reducing the pressure Ain channel 33. If the valve (3S-was not employed the airpr'essure would enter pipe 64' and force. open valve' 57 and allow the gasolene or the like to..
esca-pe, which might be very dangerous.
discharge-'air .into the combustion chamber 3 after t-he air 'in channel 33 has been introduced therein, theconstru'ctionof said valve being shown in detail in Figs. 7 and-8. This valve comprises a cylindrical body 71- having a semi-circular section cut out therefrom betherethrough.
ed through its opening 72. .The valve 68 is it is desirous to have pipe 65 105 tween itsends, andprovided with a central to cover the cut-'out portion just mentioned, 'l 'and servesas a screen for the material proj ectshownin its open position in the drawing,
from which it will be understood that, in iS closed position, covers the lower end )of the scavenging p1pe end of the carbureter port 64.
The valve 68 is partially rotated-sothatv 65 and the discharge the same may cover and 'uncover pipes .65-
