Description

J. GRISSOM. FLUE BASE' APPLICATION FILED 0012.22, 1909.
Patented ct. 25; 1910.
rnswomus PETER: co., wAsHlNcroN. mc.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH GRISSOIVI, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA FLUELBAsE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GRIssoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Elue-Bases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in flue bases for chimneys and is designed particularly with a view of providing a construction which can be applied without skilled labor, is of considerable less expense than the present flue bases, and possesses every advantage in respect to strength and rigidity and security against causing lires which any of the present bases possess.
More particularly it is my object to provide a base cut from metal plate and provided with a central aperture and side notches, which notches receive and lock the plate to the U-shaped hanger irons which hang between the' joists and are supported therefrom by having their upper ends bent at right angles to engage the top of the joists.
My invention comprises the details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan view of my flue base in position to receive the chimney, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
As illustrated, the flue base is formed from a flat metal plate 1 provided with a round central aperture 2 to receive the stove pipe and having opposite pairs of notches 3 3 and M, each pair of notches being positioned on opposite sides of the opening 2. The base is supported by a pair of U- shaped hangers 5 which have flat bottom portions 6 and have their ends turned over and outwardly at 7 and downwardly at 8 to engage the tops of the joists 9. The notches 3 and 4c are of such width and depth'as to properly'receive a bar 5 upon which the plate is adapted to rest, the notches, by en- Speceation of Letters Patent.

gagement with the bar, holding the plate against lateral displacement and locking it to the hangers. The bottom portion 6 of the hangers ext-ends entirely across under the plate and on each side, irmly bracing and supporting the same and giving it adequate strength to withstand the weight of the chimney or flue l0.
To apply my improved flue base, it is only necessary to drop the hangers over the joists and to slip the plate 1 between them, bringing the hangers into position in the notches 3 and 4: when the flue base is ready to receive the flue. This requires in practice hardly any time and by enabling the plate 1 to be loraced and strengthened by the supporting portions 6 of the hangers, I can form the same of sheet iron at a very low cost as compared with the cast metal bases which are at present cast with strengthening flanges or ribs and are usually supported by bolts and overhead cross-pieces. By the use of the solid supporting plate l, my invention is superior to those which use several cross bars and must necessarily add a tin or other flue plate to receive the stove pipe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a flue base, a pair of supports spaced from each other, each support being of substantially U-shape and having outbent and down-turned hook like ends for engagement with adjacent joists, and a centrally perforated iat plate normally resting upon the cross connecting portions of the said supports and having notches formed in opposite side edges receiving the vertical leg portions of said supports, whereby the plate will be held against displacement with respect to the latter without the use of fasteners.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
i JOSEPH GRISSOM.
