BUGrGrY-BOW REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1910.
Application filed December 30, 1909. Serial No. 535,577.
To all whom it may concern.'
LBe it known that I, JOHN A. STAFFORD, a citizen of the United States of America, residingat Grady, in the county of J eiferson and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Bow Rests, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rests for supporting the rear bows of vehicle tops, and the principal object of the same is to provide a support of the character stated that may be readily attached to a vehicle body and which will yieldably support the top when folded so that damage to the top incidental to rough traveling will be prevented.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features of the same are necessarily susceptible of changes in detail and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of a buggy body showing the sides of the same equipped with the improved bow rests. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the improved rest. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, a bow being shown supported by the rest.
Referring to said accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates the body of the improved bow rest, said body being provided with a longitudinal opening 2 that is intersected by a fastening screw 3 by means of which said body may be detachably fastened over the usual pivot stud 4t that projects from the vehicle body 5 and supports the lower end of the top prop 6. The body 1 is provided with two pairs Oflaterally projecting pivot ears 7-8, said pairs of ears being oppositely disposed, and each provided with a pivot bolt 9.
A pair of rest arms 10-11 are provided, one being pivotally mounted between each pair of ears of the body 1, said arms obviously projecting in opposite direction and being duplicates. Each arm has its free end provided with an upstanding concaved seat 12 which supports the rear bow 13 of the vehicle top when said top is lowered. Adjacent their end that is pivotally connected to the body 1, each arm is provided with a pendent lug 141 that terminates in a laterally projecting pin 15, the pins of the lugs proj ecting toward each other and forming end seats for the spiral spring 16 which is of the expansible type and is constantly exerting a pressure tending to force said lugs away from each other.
It will be understood, of course, that while in the foregoing description it has been stated that the body 1 is detachably mounted upon the lower pivot stud of the top prop, the body may be otherwise detachably supported, the main object sought being to retain the said body in position for its rest arms to receive the rear bow of the vehicle top when said top is lowered.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the invention comprises simple yet eiiicient means for yieldably supporting the top of the vehicle, thereby preventing the same being damaged by the shocks and jars incidental to traveling over rough roads.
lhat I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the character described comprising a body adapted for detachable engagement with a vehicle body, a pair of oppositely projecting bow supporting arms pivoted thereto, a pendent lug projecting from each arm, and a spring interposed between said pendent lugs.
2. A device of the character described comprising a hollow body, means for detachably fastening the same to a vehicle body, a pair of oppositely projecting arms pivoted thereto and provided with a seat at their free ends, a pendent lug projecting from each arm, a laterally projecting spring supporting pin projecting from each lug, and a
